We would also like to sincerely thank John, the massage and mobility therapist for his service to Blake-hurst, John has a wonderful connection with the residents at Blakehurst. Please be advised Blakehurst Aged Care has specific areas where residents and families can smoke. Smoking is not permitted in the courtyard of the home under any circum-stances. I would really appreciate it if you can assist me in respecting the residents home by not smoking in the court-yard. If you are a resident that smokes I will talk to you and allocate an area where you can smoke. Thank you so much.

Noel celebrated his 90th Birthday in January with his family and friends.

Beth Hobson was born in August, 1920; Greenwich, Sydney. Her father, Alfred Giles Whitter, was a minis-ter (Methodist) and her mother, Ethel Annie, was a delightful woman who lived to the marvellous age of 95 years. Beth is one of five children and her brother is now 101 years old. He lives in New Zealand. As a child, Beth moved around every 4 years due to her father’s vocation. She started school in Greenwich and finished year 12 at Newcastle High, living in Toronto, Newcas-tle. Beth attended university and completed training at RPA to become a physiotherapist in the late 1930’s. She was one of 30 women who completed their degree in physiotherapy train-ing at RPA. Subsequently, Beth worked at Newcastle hospital for 3 ½ years as a physiotherapist, later working in Wollon-gong where she met her husband, Allen Hobson. They soon fell in love and got married in 1940 in Sydney. Allen and Beth had 4 sons and raised their family in Sydney. He was a hairdresser and had his own hairdressing business. At the age of 97, Beth loves spending time with her family and going to family gatherings and social outings with them. Beth has grandchildren and great grand-children and enjoys playing golf, reading and dancing. Thank you Beth for sharing your story with us.

Alexandra Dias [Diversional Therapist]

2018 is now well underway, with January passing much too quickly. It has been a great start to the New Year, with our Australia Day BBQ and cele-brations with entertainers Peter and Vic. All the Australia Day decorations will soon come down and be packed away for another year, ready for Valentine’s Day. The February calendar will see our residents keeping busy with a variety of interesting activi-ties. A few highlights are the Valentine’s Day Cel-ebration and Dancing with Charles and Candy. Please refer to the back of the newsletter to see some of the other highlights occurring this month. On a side note, if families and friends would like to receive a monthly activity calendar, please email [email protected] for this to be arranged. I would also like to take this opportunity to con-gratulate Lisa and Renee on accepting new roles within our home. Lisa has become our Customer Service Coordinator and Renee will be taking on a new role as the Community Liaison Officer. Thank you for your hard work and efforts as the Leisure and Lifestyle Coordinators. Lastly, I’d like to thank everyone who has gener-ously donated items for the ‘Dementia Day Care Centre’. It is truly appreciated and the items will be put to good use. Thank you. Wishing you all a fabulous February.

The NRL Football season will be kicking off on the 8th of March. If you would like to participate in our footy tipping competition, please see Renee or any of the lifestyle team for more information. The NRL Footy tipping competition is one of our most popular comps of the year. It is a great opportunity to share a common interest with your fellow community members, or learn something new. If you need assistance, please just ask.

Meet Jay Richards: Bus Driver

Hello … I am originally from Chicago and spent most of my professional career in banking and finance. I have been semi-retired since 2014 and am nearing completion of my house renovation. My 12 year old son Oliver attends school at Dul-wich High School (Visual Arts & Design) and my wife Carolyn works part-time in radio operations at the ABC in Ultimo. Be-fore moving to Sydney I assisted several of my family mem-bers in home care, nursing homes and retirement villages. The experience impressed upon me the personal benefit of assisting others and has always stayed with me. Last year I began working as a Bus Driver and was able to implement a variety of activities such as Crooner’s Club.

Crooner’s Club is where I present a biography of a well-known Jazz artist i.e. Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Bing Cros-by and then listen to their music. I look forward to meeting everyone and ensuring all travellers get onto and off the bus safely and to make all your bus trips a positive and enjoya-ble experience.

Meet Jennine Walters: Recreational Activities Officer

I am extremely pleased to have joined the Lifestyle Depart-ment at Blakehurst Aged Care Centre. I have not always been involved in aged care and, much as I am from Sydney, I have quite a diverse background that has brought me into working in this most enjoyable field.

I grew up in the Hills district in Northwest Sydney, on five acres, where my family bred Angora goats, more as a hobby. On completion of my education at PLC Croydon, I became a kindergarten teacher for several years before taking a work-ing holiday for almost three years to England and Europe. I worked in the English school system as a relief teacher and worked as an ‘au pair’ in a French ski resort for a year. This time abroad allowed me to fulfil many of my travel interests and I enjoyed touring South America, Scandinavia, Europe and North Africa.

On my return to Australia I bought and ran a fast food busi-ness in St Mary’s industrial area. It was nothing short of hectic and I was pleased to move forward and sell it. I also worked in an art gallery which sold unusual pieces of glassware, jewellery and paintings by Australian artists. I married and then joined the wine industry for the next twenty years working as a sales representative for many of the well-known companies. They were very interesting years. Taking up ballroom dancing, twenty years ago, also has given me much pleasure!

My elderly father needed care so I resigned from my sales position to look after him and reinvented myself in the Lifestyle area as an Activities Officer. I was then able to look af-ter him while I enjoyed working four years, in a facility for the elderly, in Parramatta and then one year in Concord. I am very passionate about working in the aged care sector. I really enjoy interacting with the residents, and their families, and I would like to make a difference to our residents quality of life by providing stimulating programs based on their interests. My time at Blakehurst Aged Care Centre I see as a very rewarding experience in such a happy and friendly environment.
