Transcript of A Message from Doug Sheldon, SCSAA President · R. Douglas Sheldon ‘59 President, Sidney Central...

Dear Friends and Fellow Alumni,

I have had the pleasure to serve as a director of our SCS Alumni Associa-tion since 2000 and the privilege to serve as its president since 2013.

Why is it a pleasure and a privilege for me to serve? Why am I passionate about the bonds of Sidney High Alumni? Why am I so committed to the work of our alumni association?

Why do I make 400 mile, round trips to attend a board meeting or a committee meet-ing? Why do I bring my children and grandchildren every Memorial Day weekend to Sidney, and why do I bring my brother, sister and daughter every SCS reunion?

The friends and aquaintances of my youth and the education, mentoring, and culture that I absorbed living in Sidney from age 4-21 shaped my life, my thoughts, my passions, and my talents in deep, unmistakable and unshakeable ways.

The respect I had for my parents, my teachers, and for the kids that were so much a part of my life remains powerful. If I think a moment about all that, I realize that all my subsequent efforts to form a career, a family, a new life with new definitions always draw me right back to the values I gained from the culture that is imbued in living and learning in Sidney, New York.

I have recently challenged the SCSAA Board of Directors in particular, to begin a membership campaign to increase our alumni dues paying members from 800 to 1,200. Why such a campaign?

Association to create network for connecting Alumni and SCS Students

The SCSAA is working con-tinuously to strengthen the connection be-tween Alumni and current Sidney students working closely with the Sidney School administration to host events and programs which benefit students in many ways. The SCSAA annual Career Day brings Alumni to the school from various professional backgrounds to share their experiences and insight with students from grades 7-12.

The January meeting of the Board of Directors, held to plan for the year ahead, is located in the new Alumni Room.

A KALUMNISHARINGKNOWLEDGE

Look at the three-day reunion week-end the board provides each July. It is as diverse and as long, as college reunions. The many activities serve to reunite all alumni with a part of Sidney that has a deep and lasting meaning for them, and reconnects them with past friends, new friends, and maybe friends temporarily forgot-ten while we are off buildingfamilies and lives in other parts of the state, country, or world.

Look at our Wall of Fame with its 63 inductees and the Sports Hall of Fame with 50 members, and the special recognition of legendary teams, and you are struck by what the culture of our community and school system produces on an extraordinary level.

Look at the donations, the many scholarships, programs and activities we have made possible for the school and its students, including an annual Career Day for grades 8-12. And now we propose to take two students a year as “fellows” on our board of directors to provide them with leadership experience they might not get otherwise until much later in life. Look at the matching grants to the Sidney Library, to the Veteran’s Memorial Park, to the Sidney Center Improvement Group, and the collaboration with the Emergency Squad, Christmas on Main Street, the Sidney Music and Art Fair and the Tri-Town Regional Hospital Wellness Fair.

We, the SCSAA, are a force in bringing together friends, new friends, students, teachers and community leaders with programs to fulfill our vision enabling our service to:

Share the vision! See the value alumni bring to Sidney!

You are invited to join SCSAA as a dues-paying member and as a vol-

unteer. By doing so, you will provide the resources needed to forge ahead.

Share with us the fun along with the emotional and friendship rewards.

We make a difference & we are giving back!R. Douglas Sheldon ‘59

President, Sidney Central School Alumni Association

This event has taken place for three years and has garnered tremendous support and positive feedback from students, Alumni and the Adminis-tration. In an effort to continue this meaningful relationship and to get more Alumni involved, SCSAA is in the early planning phase of creat-ing the Alumni Sharing Knowledge (ASK) Network.

The Association will invite all alum-ni to opt-in to the program by being part of a searchable online database including your name, class year, sports and/or extra-curricular in-volvement, post-high school educa-tion or military service, internships, professional experience, current occupation and personal interests/hobbies.

This information will be hosted on two kiosk-style, touch screen mon-itors located in high-traffic areas in the Sidney High School. Students will have the ability to search this database to locate information rel-evant to their needs. They can then choose to contact you in a manner in which you prefer (i.e. by email, mes-senger, phone, etc.) to ask questions relative to your experience. This can give students a direct perspective on their field of interest and the knowl-edge and excitement that they too can pursue a career path after leaving Sidney schools and become successful.

Over the past year the SCSAA has rolled out a new logo, updated Reflections’ layout, revised the web- site and created a new Facebook page. Beginning December 2016 Reflections is now released immedi-ately on -line via the SCSAA web-site and Facebook page. This was accomplished to increase our profile, our presence and accessibility to alumni using 21st Century digital technology community on-line is every possible manner fulfilling the 2018 Association President’s chal-lenge to enhance and expand our communication with alumni and in-crease our association membership.

This special SCSAA 20th Anniver-sary Membership Reflection edition outlines the Association’s involve-ment in numerous initiatives, projects and programs to fulfill its mission of

SCSAA will also use this database to recruit Alumni to participate in events like Career Day and other programming that would benefit from having a work and world perspective. The Association will not give nor make accessible your information to an outside party and will share the information only as you allow. Our goal is to give stu-dents a perspective from individu-als who have no doubt been in their shoes before but have found their way to business and career success. The Association will also host historical information including: profiles of Sidney Wall of Fame Inductees, Sports Hall of Fame Inductees, notices of Alumni

STAY CONNECTED... IT’S EASY ENOUGH!‘service to alumni, school and community’, and its credo to “give back” to the community and school that both enriched and made possible our progress in life.

In the busy, instant information age, and the always on-the-go culture that in which we live, there’s no doubt that time is a valuable resource constantly under a barrage of distraction, but the rewards of commitment to a vision of service to greater needs provides a satisfaction and an en-richment that stays with you, enlivens your spirit and fills you soul.

The members and directors of SCSAA are ALL volunteers - some live and work in the area, some travel from afar. But with today’s technology we are able to continue the work of the Association regardless of distance or the pressure of time because we are connected!

We invite all alumni to join us in our commitment of service. Your dues make possible all that the members and volunteers of SCSAA accom-plish. Here’s how you can follow our progress and stay up to date with our events and programming:

weekend events and other Associa-tion sponsored programming. We look forward to your involve-ment and willingness to give back to the community, school and alumni which helped shape us all during some of the most important develop-mental and influential years of our lives. ASK: Alumni Sharing Knowledge, Alumni giving back. If you have any questions about the program, please contact Michael Sellitti, Director of Communica-tions, for the SCSAA at: [email protected]. Thank you for your consideration, time and participation.

Career Day. In April of 2016 the SCSAA coordi-nated the inaugural SCSAA sponsored Career Day at Sidney Central High School. The presentation was so successful with the students that SCSAA has been asked to return. Two more Career Day events were held in the Fall of 2016 and 2017, which now coincide annually with National Education Week. Professions are chosen by students in grades 7 – 12 prior to attending Career Day. Seventeen to 23 alumni and former faculty from a wide variety of career fields, are set up at individual tables and talk to the students about their career and answer questions.Keynote speakers are motivating! They encourage and challenge SCS students, instill values for success and generate a great deal of positive energy:* Ray Durso, Executive Director of the Genesis group in Utica, who also helped develop our original Career Day, held in 2016; * Chuck D’Imperio, Sidney Class of ’67, local radio personality, author and member of the SCSAA Wall of Fame; * Dr. Mark Montgomery, Asso- ciate Dean of Social Sciences and Public Services at Mohawk Valley Community College.
