A-LEVEL ENGLISH LANGUAGE

WHAT WILL I LEARN ON THIS COURSE?The English Language A Level course will feature:• Textual analysis

• Child language acquisition

• Language variation and change

• Differing attitudes to language

• Creative and investigative work

Studying A level English language will develop an understanding of, and the ability to apply, the language levels that underpin the course. The language levels are:• Phonetics, phonology and prosodics: how speech sounds and the analysis of the effects.

• Lexis and semantics: the vocabulary of English, including historical, geographical, social and individual varieties of English.

• Grammar and morphology: the structural patterns and shapes of English at sentence, clause, phrase and word level.

• Pragmatics: how language is used in context.

• Discourse: extended stretches of communication occurring in different genres, modes and contexts.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?The A level English Language course will be assessed by 80% external examinations and 20% coursework.

The coursework assessment allows students the opportunity to be both independent and reflective learners, which support the development of academic skills required for further study. The coursework includes a language investigation and a creative original writing piece, allowing students to draw together the knowledge acquired across the course and apply the skills of linguistic analysis when exploring the language in a variety of contexts.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR During the course of each year we organise theatre visits from actors, authors and poets to further enrich the pupils’ learning experience. Also, the English department runs a numbers of lunch time activities which develop students’ language skills in a fun way.

WHAT COULD I GO ON TO DO AT THE END OF MY COURSE?The skills and experience involved in the study of English Language at AS or A level would prove an excellent foundation for a wide range of courses in higher education or for a variety of career options. The course would allow students to proceed to linguistic-based courses at degree level. The insights developed in the course would be useful in other areas of study, particularly Media Studies, Law and Modern Languages. Those who wish to proceed directly in to a career will find the subject useful, particularly in relation to work in journalism and the media.

The grade requirements for this subject is Grade 5 in both English Language GCSE and English Literature GCSE.
