Adult Sunday School

On August 2nd , we begin a new series for Adult Sunday School. We will be using John Dominique Crossan's study of The

Challenge of Jesus. This is a study of the life of Jesus drawn not only from the Gospels and other scripture but from the

research of the world's foremost scholar on the life and times of the historical Jesus.

Our study will be divided into four sections each consisting of four weekly sessions which will explore:

1. The World at the Time of Jesus

2. The Life of Jesus and the influences of the surrounding social, governmental and religious institutions

3. The Death of Jesus

4. The Resurrection

Each session begins with a 15 minute video presentation by Dr. Crossan followed by group discussion.

Please come and join us for this new, different and Challenging study of the life and times of Jesus based on historical

research placed side by side with scriptural accounts.

ALL ARE INVITED!

EVERYONE IS WELCOME!

IT WILL NOT BE DULL!

BOOK BUDDY PROGRAM It’s hard to believe, but school will be starting back in August. Our Book Buddy Ministry at McLeod School begins shortly after Labor Day. Many thanks to all who have been such faithful volunteers. We are looking forward to your continued service. There are an overwhelming number of children at McLeod who need a “buddy” because they are behind in their school-work. It requires an hour each week, of your choosing, with a child who is kindergarten through the 5th grade. If you are interested, please call Patty Clark at 601-956-6826-home, 601-201-9332-call or email [email protected]. There will be an informational meeting on Tuesday, August 18th at 9:30 a.m. at St Philips.

Ultreya News De Colores!!

What is a Cursillo Weekend?

Cursillo comes from the Spanish and means "a short course". The Cursillo Movement is introduced over a consecutive seventy-two hour period called a "Three Day Weekend." During the three day weekend, which begins Thursday evening and ends Sunday afternoon, a team of Episcopal Priests and/or Deacons and lay personnel present a series of talks to the entire group. The team and candidates discuss these talks in small groups. The discussions provide an opportunity to share insights about the presentations and hear how others received that same presentation. The talks and discussions cover a variety of topics including:

The lay person's role within the Church Meaning of grace and sacraments Importance of prayer and the study of God Christian leadership and living Christianity in community Our call to transform the very environments in which we live The importance of supporting one another in our efforts to live a truly Christian life

In addition, throughout the weekend the participants will attend daily Eucharist. Typically, by the end of the weekend, all participants and staffers have a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ and a better understanding of the power of the Holy Spirit. Also, everyone will leave the weekend having met new friends throughout the state. The next Cursillo #129 weekend will be held September 24-27, 2015 at Gray Center in Canton. We have a few St. Philippians attending and if you are interested, don't hesitate to ask someone. What is an Ultreya Meeting?

"Ultreya" is a Spanish word, derived from the original Latin, meaning Onward! This word is used by the Cursillo community to signify the meeting which is held after a Cursillo experience. This meeting is held in conjunction with several other Jackson area parishes and provides continuity and continues to uphold the community. Everyone is invited and encouraged to come to an Ultreya meeting, even though one might not have attended a weekend.

The Ultreya meeting this month is Monday, August 24th beginning at 6:30. We will begin with snacks/refreshments and the program will start at 7:00pm. As always, would love for you to bring a friend, snack and or just yourself! The location of the meeting is at Charmont Clubhouse is located at 100 Charmont Place in Ridgeland (off Lake Harbor Drive). Drive close to the gate and it will open automatically.

The Giving of Altar Flowers on Sunday is a wonderful way to celebrate and/or remember our loved ones. There are many open dates on the calendar (located on the bulletin board, in the narthex.)

We encourage at least two people to give flowers each Sunday. The cost is $45.00 per person/family.

Welcome to ACCESS for ACS!

Our online Parish Directory is HERE! Go to our web site at http://stphilips.dioms.org and clink on the Online Giving link. You will have to register the first time and set up your password. Once logged in, you can search for fellow parishioners, set up Online Giving, review your current pledge. You can then use electronic giving as a way to automate your regular offerings.

Electronic giving is convenient for you and provides much-needed donation consistency for our congregation. When travel, illness or other circumstances prevent you from attending services, this program will allow your offerings to continue on an uninterrupted basis.

ATTENTION St. Philip’s Licensed Lay Eucharist Ministers

St. Philip’s is providing Licensed Lay Leader training to be held September 19th. Beginning with Noonday Prayer, lunch will follow, and then training with David O’Steen and the Rev. Kyle Dice Seage. All Licensed Lay Leaders are urged to attend. This training will count toward recertification at the end of 2015. RSVP to the Parish Administrator Lisa Estes-Dorrell [email protected] so we will have an accurate headcount for lunch.

Altar Guild Meeting: September 19th, 10:00 a.m. lunch to follow.

GOAT ROAST NEWS The 34th Annual Goat Roast and Bluegrass Mass is October 11th. Make plans with your family and friends to spend the day celebrating this time honored tradition.

So….What’s happening at Goat Roast this Year?

Saturday, October 10th, the meat cooking team and the sides preparation team will come to St. Philip’s to start Goat Roast weekend. Activities will start about 9:00 am. Stay tuned for details.

Saturday Night Cooking Party is a great way to continue the Goat Roast fun. The cooking grills will still be hot so bring something to grill and a side to share and enjoy Live Music at this pre-event event. All of the meat will be ready to pull that evening so come prepared to help pull and chop!

Of course The Vernon Brothers will be leading us in our wonderful, musical celebration at the service and after in the Hollow.

We will have sponsorships again. There was an overwhelming response from the community the past couple years in the desire to support Habitat for Humanity. If you are interested or know someone who may be interested in sponsoring, please contact Kenny or Julie.

Goat Roast defines St. Philip’s to the Jackson community so let’s put our best foot forward. Please commit to volunteering! It’s a great way to get involved in a really fun church event. Contact Julie and Kenny Goforth to find out more at [email protected]. We will have an organizational meeting, stay tuned for more details.

Tickets and t- shirts will go on sale in September.
