Choir schools need newrecruits every year. This is anexciting option for any childwho enjoys singing!

The Choir Schools’ Association represents 47 schoolsattached to cathedrals, churchesandcollege chapels,

educating nearly 25,000 pupils, including more than1200 boy and girl choristers. A number of foundationswithout their own choir school also belong to CSA.

Some schools cater for children up to 13. Others arejunior schools attached to senior schools through to 18.Many are Church of England but the Roman Catholic,Scottish and Welsh churches are all represented.

Most choir schools are independent but three of thecountry’s finest maintained schools are in membership. Most choristers qualify for financial help with fees, fromthe school or foundation. Some receive additional helpthrough the Government’s Choir Schools’ ScholarshipScheme which is administered by CSA.

Being a chorister is a huge commitment for childrenand parents alike. In exchange they receive

“an excellent musical training and first-class academic and all-round

education”They also acquire self-discipline and a passion for

music, both of which stay with them for life. It is rare tofind a family with any regrets.

“For me, being a Chorister is so much fun. I do lots of musicand also lots of football – and we have been on TV this week.”

HELP WITH FEESThere is every chance financial help can be foundfor a child who sings well, who really wants to be achorister and whose parents genuinely cannotfind the money.

Chorister places are heavily subsidised by the choralfoundations and/or choir schools and most parents can expect to pay considerably reduced fees. TheGovernment funding mentioned earlier comes throughThe Choir School Scholarship Scheme, part of the Musicand Dance Scheme, which you can learn more about at www.dcsf.gov.uk/mds.

Choir school staff will be pleased to talk to you aboutthe financial implications of having a chorister in thefamily or you can contact CSA for further information.

MAKING THE RIGHT DECISIONThe simple checklist below will help you decidewhether a choir school would be right for yourchild.

1. Study the map on page 5 to see which schools youmight consider.

2. Contact them for a copy of their prospectus anddetails of choristerships and voice trials.

3. Visit the school/s, remembering to check what isexpected of new recruits academically as well asmusically.

4. Discuss fees at this stage too. Most choristerplaces are considerably cheaper than the averagecost for an independent school. Discounts varyfrom school to school.

5. Check too whether choristers need to be day orboarding pupils. A few schools offer the option.Don’t be put off if your family has no experienceof boarding – the children love it!

6. If you are uncertain as to your child’s ability ask tohave him/her assessed at an informal audition.

“If you have a passion for music this is the most incredibleway to fulfil it. The school and choir push you really quitehard, but if you love music you will emerge a moreknowledgeable, independent and talented person.”

“As a chorister I routinely took part in high profile performancesto a professional standard. Being exposed to wide-rangingrepertoire and having a thorough ear training helped develop areal sense of quality ensemble music making . All these things, combined with the essential skill of learning to listen well in everyrespect have been immeasurably valuable in my jazz playing.”

Kit
