classes• Students may receive any trackable item without renting

a mailbox• All students are automatically assigned a 6-digit

mailstop code (MSC#) for receiving packages only • Your student can find-out his/her MSC# by logging-in to

myBama and finding the “Ferguson Mail Center” icon under the Student tab

• Students are notified via e-mail anytime they have a package

ready for pick-up

finding the “Ferguson Mail Center” icon under the Student tab; Payment can be made online

FERGUSON MAIL CENTERMail and Packages For Students Who Live in Greek Houses

• Students who live in a sorority/fraternity house on campus have the option to receive mail and packages at their Greek house instead of the Ferguson Mail Center

• Use the same address structure, but with the MSC# of the house instead of the student’s personal MSC#

• DO NOT USE THE STREET ADDRESS OF THE HOUSE• Mailstop codes (MSC#) for each sorority/fraternity can

be found in the Resources section of Campus Mail Service website

• Items are routed to the house; not the student• Each sorority/fraternity determines how mail/packages

are distributed among their members once it is delivered to the house

• Students do not receive any notification

• The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act

• FERPA rights transfer to the student at the age of 18 or when they begin attending a post-secondary institution regardless of age

• A major goal we have for your first-year experience is to forge a strong partnership between UA, our students, and the parents of UA students.  To this end, a parent or guardian may obtain non-directory information if their student has authorized a record release through myBama, which is located in the self-service channel under Student Services>Student Records>Record Release to Parent/Guardian (FERPA). Existence of a release does not constitute a “power of attorney” empowering parents to act on behalf of the student.

What is protected under FERPA?• Grades and transcripts• Academic class schedules• Information accessed in myBama• Class rosters• Any document designated as part of the educational record

FERPAWhat can be released?

• Directory information• Information needed by a government agency • Some information to accrediting organizations• Information needed in a health or safety emergency• Some information to attorneys representing UA• Information the student has given written consent to

release• Remember your student must sign the release (In the

student orientation packet)

IMPORTANT NOTE: The University will not disclose grades over the phone regardless of signed release.  The parent must order a transcript to receive the student’s grades.registrar.ua.edu/academics/privacy-

• Key to your student’s academic success.• Students should get to know at least one professor each

semester. This will help when it comes to needing letters of reference.

• Professors prefer to communicate with the student directly. • Mid-term grades are distributed to students in 100 and 200

level courses so inquire with your student around mid-term to ask how they are doing.

• Office hours is time dedicated to talking to students.
