Manufacturing is one of Wales’ longest-established sectors. Companies and universities are developing advanced materials for a range of sectors including aerospace and defence, and automotive – at some of the world’s most advanced facilities.

Recent investments in WalesNuclear Power Investment, North Wales – November 2012HitachihascompletedtheacquisitionofHorizonNuclearPowerfromRWEandE.ON.HitachiwillnowstartleadingaprogrammeofbuildingnewnuclearpowerplantsintheUnitedKingdom,includingoneonAnglesey,NorthWales.Inaddition,HitachihasalsoannouncedthattwoleadingBritishcompanies,BabcockInternationalandRollsRoyce,havesignedMOUstojoinHitachitoplan and deliver the programme.

Hitachianticipatesthecreationofbetween5,000and6,000directjobsateachsiteduringtheconstructionphaseandafurther1,000permanentjobspersiteuponstartoftheoperationofeachsite.

Preliminaryestimates,basedonpastbuildexperience,indicateapproximately60%byvalueofthefirstunitwillbespentonlocallysourcedmaterials,personnelandservices,withthisrisingforfutureunits.HitachiwillinvestintransferringitsmodularconstructiontechnologywhichunderpinsthebuildtimetableestablishingamoduleassemblyfacilityintheUK.

Rail Electrification Investment in South Wales – July 2012PlanshavebeenannouncedfortheelectrificationofboththeGreatWesternmainlineonwardsfromCardifftoSwansea,andalsotheelectrificationofalltheValleyslinesinSouthWales.TheannouncementmarksthebeginningofastepchangeforrailinWales.Theannouncementrepresentsaninvestmentofover£350million.

TheWelshGovernmentisalreadyworkingwithNetworkRailtoplanhowthisinvestmentwillbedelivered,andwillsecurethemaximumeconomicandcommunitybenefitsfromtheworkinvolved.

A456 – Heads of the Valleys Road Improvements – December 2012TheWelshGovernmenthasannouncedplanstocreateadualcarriagewayattheheadsoftheSouthWalesValleys.Apartnershipwiththeprivatesectorwillgenerate£300mtowidenthefinaltwosectionsoftheA465.ItwillmeantheroadfromNeathtoAbergavennyisturnedintoadualcarriagewayby2020asplanned.TheWelshGovernmentwillsetupaschemethatwillraise£300mofprivatefinance,whichitwillrepayover30years.

Tata Steel’s new Blast Furnace – October 2012 TataSteel’s£185millioninvestmentintoanewblastfurnaceatPortTalbotaimstosustaintheindustryinWalesforatleast agenerationtocome.TataSteel’svisionistomaintainandenhanceastrongsteelmanufacturingbaseinWales,supplyingthebroadest range of industries including construction, automotive and consumer goods.

Welsh Government’s 21st Century Schools Programme – December 2012TheWelshGovernmentannouncedplanstoextendtheLocalGovernmentBorrowingInitiative,inpartnershipwithlocalauthorities,tothe21stCenturySchoolsProgrammewhichwouldacceleratearound£200mofinvestmentinimprovementsto new school buildings throughout Wales.

Sustainable Building Envelope Centre (SBEC)–fundedbyTataSteel,theLCRIandWelshGovernment,SBEC’sfocusisonacceleratingthedevelopmentoflowandzerocarbonsolutionsforthebuiltenvironmentusingsteelincombinationwithothermaterials.ThisinvolvesworkingcloselywithotherWelshtechnologycompaniesanddevelopingsupplychainsfortheinstallationandmaintenanceofanysolutionsthatemerge.

SBEC’saimistocreateaconstructionprocesswhichwillenablethefaçadeofbuildings–bothroofandwalls–tobetransformedfromapassiveenergyconservationroletoanactiveenergygeneration,storage,dissipationandmanagementfunction.

BasedatTataSteel’sShottonsiteinNorthWalesandledbytheLCRI,SBECoperatesoutofaspeciallyrefurbishedbuildingdesignedtoactasatestrigandprovinggroundfornewtechnologies,demonstratingtheminuse.ThebuildinghasprovisionallybeenawardedaBREEAMExcellentrating.

TheWelsh School of Architecture (CardiffUniversity)istheleadingarchitectureschoolintheUKwithover25yearspioneeringresearchinlowcarbondesignandsustainabilityinthebuiltenvironment.ItsresearchpartnershipsincludeworkwiththeHongKongRealEstateDevelopmentAssociation(REDA).Thispartnershiphelpspropertydevelopersassesstheoverallenvironmentalperformanceandenergyimpactofabuildingduringconstructionanduse.

TheCentre for Research in the Built Environment (CRiBE) pushes forward the sustainable design, construction and operation of the builtenvironment.CRiBEhasdevelopedaninter-disciplinarymodelofsustainabledesignanddevelopmentthatbringstogetherarchitects, engineers, planners and social and environmental scientists. It is involved in a number of collaborations, such as its workwithOxfordUniversityontheBuildingMarketTransformationtoresearchhowtoachievea50%reductioninCO2emissionswithintheUK’sbuildingstockby2030.

The Life Sciences Investment FundannouncedduringBioWales2012isnowoperational.The£100millionWalesLifeSciencesInvestmentFundwillinvestinLifeSciencesandrelatedmedical,pharmaceuticalandhealthcarecompaniesbasedinWales,aswellasattractingcompaniesfromtheUKandtherestoftheworldtoWales.

TheobjectivesinestablishingthefundaretoincreasetheabilityofLifeSciencesbusinessesinWalestoaccessequityfinance;increasetherateofgrowthofthesectorinWales;increaseemploymentinWales;andacceleratethecommercialisationofLifeSciencesresearch,developmentandinnovation.

Increased support for international tradehighlightsthedrivetoincreasetheinternationalprofileofthesectorthroughincreasedtradeandexportactivity.Anextensiveprogrammeofsubsidisedinternationaltradeactivitieswillbeofferedin2013/14indiversemarketstoLifeSciencesbusinessesbasedinWales.ThesuccessfulLifeSciences2012/13internationaltradeprogrammesawthelargesteverWelshGovernmentdelegationattendingMedica2012.

Planstodraw“star scientists”toWalestogalvaniseitseconomyandraisestandardsatitsuniversitieshavebeenunveiled.The WelshGovernmentpledged£50mtoluretheworld’sleadingscientiststoWalestoboosttheirsalariesandresearchteams.

TheLifeSciencessectorinWaleshaslinkedwithoneofEurope’sstrongestclustersunderanew‘twinning’agreement.A MemorandumofUnderstanding(MoU)hasbeenagreedbetweenWelshGovernmentandMediconVillage,adynamichubforresearch,innovationandentrepreneurshipwithinLifeScienceinLund,Sweden,andisdesignedtobringmutualbenefitstobusinesses and organisations in both regions.

AtBioWales2013theMinisterfortheEconomy,ScienceandTransportannouncedthataLifeSciencesHub–settobethenationalandinternationalfocalpointandnervecentreforthesectorinWales–istobeestablishedandoperationalthisyear.

TheHubwillactasacentralresourceforthewholeofthelifesciencessectorinWalesincludingacademic,business,clinicalandfundingorganisationstostimulateinteraction,innovation,networkingandcollaboration.

Tourismmakesanincreasingcontributiontotheeconomicandsocialwell-being of Wales.

TourismhasakeyroletoplayinreinforcingadistinctiveandcompellingnationalidentityforWalesintheUKandinternationallyasaplacetovisit,invest in and as a place to do business.

Why is tourism important to Wales?TourismisbigbusinessinWales.Touristsandvisitorsspendwellover£12millionadayinWales.WorkbytheWelshEconomyResearchUnit(WERU)atCardiffUniversityindicatesthattotalannualtourismdemandisaround£4.7billion.TheGrossValueAdded(GVA)attributabletotourismisat£1.8billion,equatingtosome4.4%ofdirectGVAfortheWelsheconomyasawhole.Thisresearchworkalsoindicatesthat8.3%ofthetotalWelshworkforceisdirectlysupportedbytourism.

Tourismsupplychainlinksbringbenefitstomanysmall,indigenousbusinessesinWales.Incomefromtourismisoftenthedifferencebetweensuccessandfailureformanymicrobusinesses.Tourismbusinessesarerootedinthecommunitiesthattheyserveandareheretostay.

Tourismisahighlycompetitiveglobalindustry.Walesiswellplacedtocompetewiththebestandcanofferarichcultureandheritage,alandscapeofhighscenicquality,auniquecoastlineandadiversityofexperiencestoourvisitors.

Wales’fiveareasofcompetitiveadvantage:

•Natural landscape:AkeyreasonwhyvisitorschoosetoholidayinWalesisthequalityandaccessibilityofthenaturalenvironment.ThescenerysetsWalesapart.WehavethreeNationalParksofdistinctivecharacter,fiveareasofoutstandingnaturalbeautyand,since2011,an870mile-longallWalescoastalpath,theonlyoneofitskindanywhereintheworld.

•Heritage and Culture: Thewelcomingcharacteranddiversityofourpeople,withourtwolivinglanguages,providetheessenceofWales’distinctculturalidentity.Inaddition,manyhistoricfeaturesremaininthelandscapeastestamenttoourrichheritage,includingthreeWorldHeritageSites.

•Activities and Adventure:ThesceniccharacterofWalesprovidesavariedbackdroptosupportawiderangeofactivitiesincludingwalking,cycling,horseriding,adventuresports,fishingandgolf.

The tourism marketDomestic market: TheGBdomesticmarketistheprimarymarketforWales.Itaccountsfor92%ofallstayingvisitortripsand84%ofstayingvisitorspend.Withinthis,thedomesticholidaysegmentisbyfarthemostimportantandvaluablevisitorsegmentforWaleswithjustover6milliontripsand£1.2billionvisitorspendin2011.

Overseas market:InternationalvisitorsarearelativelyhighspendingmarketbuthistoricallyhavebeenoflowerimportanceforWales,accountingforjust8%ofallstayingtripsand16%ofallstayingvisitorexpenditure.Scotland,IrelandandtheEnglishregionscurrentlyattractsignificantlymoreinternationalvisitorsthanWales.

Tourism statistics

•In2011,therewere9.7millionovernighttripstoWalesbyGBresidents.Theassociatedspendwas£1,734million.

•75%ofGBvisitorstoWalescameforaholiday,12%tovisitfriendsorrelativesand10%onbusiness.

•AmongtheregionsofWales,NorthWalesattractedthelargestshareofovernightGBtouristsonaholiday.ThemajorityofovernightbusinesstripsoccurredinSouthEastWales.

•Walesattracted879,000internationalvisitorsspending£328millionduring2011.

•ThefourtopgeneratingcountriesforoverseastourismtoWalesweretheRepublicofIreland,France,GermanyandtheUSA.

•42%ofInternationalvisitorswereonaholidaytrip,36%werevisitingfriendsorrelativesand16%wereonbusinessduring2011.

•Intotalthereweresome10.6millionovernightvisitorstoWalesspendingnearly£2.1billionduring2011.

•TheGreatBritainDayVisitssurveyindicatedthatexpenditurebydaytrippersinWalesamountedtoover£2.9billionin2011.

•TheWelshEconomyResearchUnit(WERU)atCardiffUniversityhasrecentlyupdatedtheWalesTourismSatelliteAccount(TSA)worktoa2007base.ItspurposeistoprovideamoreaccurateassessmentofthecontributionofTourismtotheeconomy.ItfollowsaninternationallyacceptedmethodologyapprovedbytheUnitedNationsWorldTourismOrganization(UNWTO).

•Thetoplineresultsindicatedtotalannualtourismdemandofaround£4.2billionandGrossValueAdded(GVA)byTourismof £1.8billion.Thisequatesto4.3%oftotaldirectGVAfortheWelsheconomy.Thesefigurescomparewiththefollowingfor TSA2000:£3.5billionfordemand,£1.1billioninrespectofGVAand3.7%ofdirectGVA.
