Which part of your trip to Hull & East Yorkshire will you and your party remember most?

Exploring the Georgian grandure of Hull’s historic Old Town, discovering the breathtaking scenery and diverse wildlife of the rugged heritage coastline; treating yourself to a luxury Boutique shopping trip in the shadow of Beverley Minister; Invigorating your senses in the beauty of the Yorkshire Wolds, your experience will last long beyond when you get home.

The UK City of Culture 2017 ExperienceHull is a vibrant waterfront city with a modern European feel but one that is also proud of its rich heritage. The cobbled streets of the old town, dominated by the beautiful architecture of the buildings along them, lead to an array of interesting and varied attractions. The old High Street is home to the Museums Quarter offering a variety of fascinating museums which form part of Hull’s collection of eight free museums. No visit to Hull though would be complete without a trip to The Deep, the world’s only Submarium, where a colony of Gentoo Penguins made their home in March 2014.And let’s not forget the many theatres and cultural events where you can enjoy comedy, drama, music and more…

Shopping HeavenIn Hull you’ll find a range of independent retailers and high street favourites, making a visit to the city a perfect opportunity to indulge in some retail therapy. Bargain hunters should head for Hull Trin-ity Market where there are over 30 stalls to browse, including fresh

produce from local traders.

Market TownsHull & East Yorkshire is rich with pretty market towns and villages, including Driffield and Pocklington on the edge of the Wolds. These are all destinations in their own right but also offer great bases from which to explore the surrounding area. Beverley is perhaps the most well known and attracts thousands of visitors every year because of its breathtaking Gothic Minster, a market place dating back to the middle ages and a wealth of arts, antiques, crafts and boutique stores to browse at your leisure.

By the seaBridlington has long been one of England’s favourite seaside towns. with its sparkling seas, golden shores and one of the most complete Georgian High Streets left in the country, plus cosy tea rooms and fresh fish and chips on the harbour - it’s easy to see why!Hornsea and Withernsea are also great places to visit offering fantastic shopping at the Freeport Hornsea Outlet Village, an array of attractions, pretty gardens, a smuggling heritage and a lighthouse museum. Nature Lovers won’t be disappointed either and should head for Spurn National Nature Reserve home to thousands of migrating birds that flock to the area each year, or the RSPB Reserve atBempton Cliffs home to over 200,000 birds at any time. Our coastline offers beauty, nature and attractions all in one great location.

Commemorative Tours for 2015In 2015, Oxford has important anniversaries to celebrate: It will be 50 years since Sir Winston Churchill’s death and the 75th of his first becoming Prime Minister, as well as the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta. Experience Oxfordshire is delighted to announce the launch of two specially themed commemorative tours to celebrate these anniversaries:

Page 23: A Grand Day Out for Groups in the UK - Issue 4

Remembering Churchill 2015 is themed around Churchill’s life and his achievements during the war. The tour starts with a visit to Ditchley Park, where many cabinet meetings where held during the war. It then continues to the Soldiers of Oxfordshire Museum, where visitors can discover personal stories behind the great wars of the 20th century, and how the conflicts affected the country. Finally, visitors can enjoy all that Blenheim Palace – the birthplace of Churchill – has to offer, including their brand new Churchill exhibition (opening 14th February 2015). As a wonderful optional add on to this tour, a themed talk by an Oxford historian can be booked!

Page 24: A Grand Day Out for Groups in the UK - Issue 4

Celebrating the Magna Carta starts off in Surrey at Runnymede Meadow to view the symbolic plaque of the ancient meeting meadow, where King John agreed to Magna Carta, before taking a river cruise upstream. The tour then continues to Oxford for a themed walking tour, during which visitors hear about Oxford’s role in the history of our nation: birthplace of King John, site of De Montfort’s Oxford Parliament, capital of the country during the reign of Charles I and place of education for 26 Prime Ministers – there is plenty Oxford has to tell. Also included is a visit to the new Weston Library building at the Bodleian Library with a tour of the Magna Carta exhibition: The library holds four of the 17 known surviving Charters, and they will be on display from late March – 20th September 2015.

Details on both itineraries can be found on Experience Oxfordshire’s Groups website: http://www.visitoxfordandoxfordshire.com/group-travel/Group_itineraries.aspx

Both tours can be tailored specifically to group requirements, with various add-ons. All tours are led by fully qualified guides. Tours can be arranged at your convenience and for groups of any size (up to 19 people per guide).

Yorkshire’s rich history can be told through the county’s glorious offering of castles, stately homes and gardens. And they all play a major part in attracting visitors as heritage-related tourism attracts around 40m to Yorkshire every year. This is more than the typical number of visitors to Times Square in a year, the most visited tourist attraction in the world.

This year has seen a cluster of Yorkshire’s stately homes link up to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War.

Duty Calls: The Country House in Time of War is the latest in a series of collaborative projects by Yorkshire Country House Partnership.

It looks at the impact of various conflicts on nine of Yorkshire’s major country houses, and the experiences of their occupants and wider communities, from the points of view of owners, servants, tenants and estate workers.

From March 2013 until October 2014 simultaneous interlinked exhibitions and programmes of events and activities will highlight and explore each house’s own particular circumstances, collections and stories, chronicling how these estates and communities faced the hardships of war across three centuries.

Houses involved in Duty Calls are:Beningbrough Hall, York (National Trust), Brodsworth Hall, Doncaster (English Heritage) Castle Howard, North Yorkshire, Fairfax House, YorkKiplin Hall, Richmond, Lotherton Hall, Leeds, Newby Hall, RiponNostell Priory, Wakefield (National Trust), Sewerby Hall, BridlingtonFor full details visit: www.ychp.org.uk
