HEVER CASTLE & GARDENS (UK) - 2017 Groups Press Diary

Hever Castle Press Diary 2017 for Groups Situated in the beautiful Weald of Kent, romantic Hever Castle & Gardens is famous for being the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, second wife of Henry VIII and mother of Queen Elizabeth I. Its combination of colourful history, glorious award-winning gardens and popular attractions make it a memorable day out for visitors of all ages and interests. The original medieval castle with its gatehouse and walled bailey was built in 1270, with the Tudor dwelling added within its walls by the powerful Boleyn family who lived at Hever during the 15th and 16th centuries. Its splendid panelled rooms contain fine furniture, tapestries, two Books of Hours signed and inscribed by Anne Boleyn and an important collection of Tudor portraits described by David Starkey as “one of the best collections of Tudor portraits after the National Portrait Gallery.” Having purchased the Hever Castle Estate in 1903, American multi-millionaire William Waldorf Astor created the magnificent gardens to showcase his unique collection of ancient Greek and Roman statuary collected while he was American Ambassador to Italy. Laid out by Joseph Cheal and Son between 1904-1908, each area has its own style and character, from the magnificent Italian Garden with the majestic Loggia which overlooks the 38-acre lake, to the Tudor Garden and Walled Rose Garden containing over 4,000 fragrant roses. One of these is the Hever Castle Rose (Horquinsey) with its velvety deep blooms, launched by Dame Judi Dench who describes Hever Castle as one of her favourite British landmarks. The breathtaking gardens at Hever Castle received a Gold Award and won the Heritage Parks & Gardens category at the 2016 South & South East in Bloom awards. Children can let off steam in the Adventure Playground while visitors of all ages enjoy the challenge of finding their way through the Water Maze and 100 year old Yew Maze. Steam boat trips and rowing boat hire are available from the Edwardian boathouse (school holidays and weekends, April – Sept, weather permitting). There’s a fascinating collection of Miniature Model Houses from medieval times to the Victorian age in a permanent display adjoining the Gift Shop. The Hever Gift and Plant Shops stock a beautiful array of exclusive gifts, souvenirs, local produce, books, plants and shrubs. And for visitors looking to make a day of it, the Moat and Guthrie Pavilion Restaurants offer a wide selection of hot and cold food and refreshments. WHAT’S NEW FOR 2017 Astor’s Garden Legacy Hever Castle’s new garden exhibition was officially opened by celebrity gardener Rachel de Thame in June 2016. The interactive display traces the restoration and development of the stunning gardens from Tudor times to the present day.
