A Note from Our Director ...

I am extremely honored that WVLO asked me to direct forthem and to work on such a great show! The cast is so talented, the crew isoutstanding, and the orchestra is the best! I could not have done this with-out the fabulous, hard-working, diligent staff- my heroes! Here you willfind the details on how the concept of ''Anything Goes" came about!

''Anything Goes" was first envisioned by producer Vinton Freedleywhilehiding out aboard a fishing boat in the Gulf of Panama after fleeing thecountry to escape creditors. His idea was based on the premise of an oceanliner facing the threat of a possible shipwreck. He returned to New Yorkand, after paying off his debts, began assembling his dream team - ColePorter, Guy Bolton, PG. Wodehouse, & Ethel Merman. Soon Freedley hada script that he felt sure would reverse his sagging fortunes. Then, withrehearsals just about to begin, the 5.5. Morro Castle went down off thecoast of New Jersey. Over 125 passengers lost their lives in the highly pub-licized disaster. ''Anything Goes", Freedley decided, would have to be re-wntten.

"Anything Goes" did not actually appear as the title until this seconddraft and referred to the desperation with which the show was put together. The rewrite retained most of the same characters, but did away with theidea of the shipwreck. The plot revolved around nightclub singer RenoSweeney (Merman), her pal Billy Crocker, Crocker's debutante-love, HopeHarcourt, and Moonface Mooney, Public Enemy #13, who slips onto theship to avoid the FBI.

"Anything Goes" opened at the Alvin Theatre on November 21, 1934,and turned out to be the fourth-longest running musical of the 1930's. In1987, it was revived at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre with Patti LuPone inthe leading role and a revised book by Timothy Crouse and John Weidman. The 1936 screen version starred Ethel Merman and Bing Crosby.

I would like to dedicate this show to my Aunt Edna, a true lady, whomI admire with all my heart. Sit back, relax and enjoy our story! Have funwith "Anything Goes!"
