ORIOLE PRIDE “We Tend To Get What

We Expect”

CAN’T TOUCH THIS It was a nostalgic homecoming parade for some, the Junior Class float rolled by with MC Hammer blasting & signage that read “Can’t Touch This”. There in lies a fitting title to this weeks football recap, a recap that begins & ends with the Orioles retaining property rights for another year to the trophy that goes to the victor in the esteemed Tractor Bowl series. It took Springville just 4 plays to find the end zone in Friday’s game & eventual 49-14 shellacking of Central City. As far as Homecoming wins go, this one was a goody. The Oriole’s threw for 99 yards & ran for 255. Central City rushed for –2, as in NEGATIVE 2. The Wildcats did however, muster up some passing yardage late in the game that enabled them to finish with 126 yards through the air, 124 total, to Springville’s 354. It started & ended with Oriole fans cheering from one end of a packed Allison Field to the other. Senior Drake Coonrod scored the first touchdown & Junior Elias Nissen threw to Senior Jake Hulett for the 2nd. At the end of the 1st quarter it was still a respectable 13-0 ball game, but then the Springville special teams & defense stepped on the gas. Central City punted to start the 2nd quarter & it was blocked by the Oriole front line & Junior Brian Allsup recovered it in the end zone for a Springville score. After he added the PAT it was 20-0. On Central City’s next possession, a crushing hit by Jake Hulett forced a QB fumble & Stewart was right there to pounce on it, the O’s took over on the Wildcat 11 yard line. Next play was a Sam Scriver to Jake Hulett connection for a TD & an Allsup PAT made it 27-0. Central City went to the air on their next possession, but Allsup made them pay when he picked off a pass at the Wildcat 39. As the O’s took over the crowd really notched up the noise & on the first play from scrimmage Scriver scrambled out of a would be sack & hit Nissen for another Oriole score. A flag & Springville penalty brought it back however, but no worries as Nissen & Coonrod took the O’s right back to the goal line. With 1st & goal, Nissen literally ran through a Central City linebacker to score & give us a 33-0 lead. The Wildcat woes continued as just 3 plays later Jesse Robertson & Jake Hulett sacked the QB for a safety & a 35-0 Oriole lead. On the kick off, Nissen ran it back for a touch down, but a holding call brought it back to the Springville 37. Once again, a penalty became a positive, it gave our offense a few extra snaps & after Scriver & Nissen first downs, Scriver ran the option & pitched it perfectly to Nissen who waltzed into the end zone. With the PAT the lead grew to 42-0. The half ended with the Wildcats simply using the clock to keep our offense off the field. After the royalty was tended to, the second half opened up with the Oriole’s receiving. Coonrod set them up nicely on the goal line but yet another penalty brought it back to the Wildcat 28. The next play was a hand off to Nissen who ran right in to the end zone. Another Allsup extra point made it 49-0. Two plays into the next possession, Central City fumbled & Jesse Robertson swallowed it up. Other than eating some clock, the Oriole’s didn’t do much with the turn over & Coonrod ran out to punt. He sailed a beauty over the Wildcat receiver & pinned them on their 5. Down 49-0 you knew they’d pass & Allsup simply waited. He caught his second interception of the game & gave the O’s the ball on the Wildcat 21. Coach Martin sent Freshman Jacob Loehr in at QB along with other younger players to pick up some Varsity minutes. Runs by Sophomore’s Cody Blake & Tyler McDowell weren’t enough for a first & Springville turned it over on downs. The next 2 possessions for Central City would prove to be their best, as they capitalized on our younger defenders & threw a couple long balls that turned into scores. That’s ok though, the trophy was safely nestled in the bucket of the school John Deere, & it was clear that it would remain in the Oriole trophy case for another year. I must admit, I asked Coach Martin what must be the silliest question of the year when I posed to him; “Is this the first time we’ve kept the trophy for two seasons in a row? He nicely responded, “ Since this is the first time we have had the

trophy, yes it is the first time we were able to defend it”. Ah, of course. When it was all said & done, statistically, Nissen threw for one score & ran for 3 of his own on 15 carries & 158 yards. Allsup had 2 INT’s, Hulett had 2 TD’s & Sam Scriver threw 5 completions, good for 99 yards & one TD. Not bad at all. “I thought that we did a great job of coming out from the get go and taking care of business. We talked about the possibility of only playing a half with our varsity and wanted them to go hard for how ever long they were out there. Holding them to 10 total yards of offense in the first half is an accomplishment that not many teams have done”, said Coach Martin. With the win, the Oriole’s are 5-0 but have little time to enjoy it. Preston awaits, & they are coming off their first loss of the season. At 4-1, averaging just under 63 points a game, the Trojans seem to be no easy opponent. Coach Martin believes the key to the game will be “time of possession. Our best defense could be our offense. If we can make the game go at our pace that will help with momentum. Along with that we need to hang on to the football and lower the number of penalties we commit”. It sure would be nice if Preston had MC Hammer’s “Can’t Touch This” as part of their pre-game music, I’d feel real good if I heard that on Friday evening.

LADY O’S NOTCH 2 WINS AT NORTH CEDAR, BEAT THE LYNX AT HOME

There is no other sport in which momentum plays more of a role. Volleyball can be back and forth, volleyball can be one sided and volleyball can be one hair raising, frustrating, yet amazing game. The Lady O’s faced Lisbon first thing Saturday Morning in a North Cedar tournament and played them tough in the first set before falling 21-18 and then dropped the second set 21-13. Coach Eastman had them refocused for their second match against Midland and boy it felt good to beat them. It took a tie breaker but the Ladies got the job done, 21-14, 16-21, 15-11. All that awaited were the Tipton Tigers and again the Lady O’s played tough but fell 21-19 and 22-20. “I think our best overall match of the day was against Tipton. We had our chances to win in both games 1 and 2 and just came up short. I thought the kids played their best and most competitive match then”, said Coach Eastman. Tuesday night was a home stand against North Linn and perhaps gave us a glimpse of how good these gals can be. Springville defeated North Linn 25-17, 25-20 and 25-23 in front of a nice sized crowd in Machovec Gymnasium. Coach Eastman was happy

with the performance and offered “Tonight was our best night at the net by far this season. What I really like about this team is that each kid does her job and contributes to the team's success. Tonight

was a great team victory. We have focused on getting off to good starts in each set. In set 3, we didn't. In fact, we spotted North Linn a five-point lead”. Matches like this evening, including a come from behind win should boost morale and Coach added, “They are also learning they CAN come from behind and win. These experiences should give our girls the confidence to know that they can be successful. I think a match win like tonight will pay off for us down the road. It gives us something on which to continue to build”. Build indeed. Thursday, they’ll look to build on their win record when they play the 4-13 Central City Wildcats. At 5-20 themselves, the Lady O’s need this one. Support your Lady O’s and take a short trip to Central City Thursday, Fresh-Soph start at 5:15, with JV to follow and Varsity action at approximately 7pm.

SAMANTHA FITZGERALD—STILL WORKING ON HER TAN

While most of us have packed away the towels, sunscreen and flotation devices, Springville Junior Samantha Fitzgerald still heads to the pool every day. The Lady “O” is swimming for Linn-Mar and getting plenty of print from Metro reporters. On Tuesday, Fitzgerald and her Lion team mates took on City High and Vinton/Union in Iowa City. All Samantha did was win all 4 events she raced in; the 50 and 500 freestyle, the medley relay and the 500 relay. Good enough for her and good enough for Linn Mar as they won the double dual meet. Samantha is the daughter of Patricia and David Fitzgerald of Springville.

JUNIOR HIGH FOOTBALL TEAM MOVES TO 2-2

Middle School Coaches Jeff Menster, Mike Moran and Kyle Koeppen have the Junior High football team moving the ball and playing tough defense as of late. They have had two wins in a row to move to .500 after beating up on Central City Tuesday and winning the Junior High Version of the Tractor Bowl—complete with trophy and all. The boys will play Cedar Valley Christian at St. Joseph School on Thursday, a team they previously beat 40-6. In Tuesday’s 41-6 win over the Wildcats, Nick Hagensick returned an interception for a touch down, Cavanaugh Riley threw for a score and ran for another, Henry Hoogland made good on all but one of his PAT’s and Seth Blake put hit after hit on the Wildcat QB. The only negative on the afternoon was the loss of Andrew Blakely. After a tackle the 8th grader came out with a broken arm. The team has just two games remaining, the Cedar Valley game on Thursday and a final home game against Midland on Tuesday, October 9 at Allison Field. Games start at 4pm.

LITTLE O’S DROP TWO The 3rd/4th football team hosted Lisbon Sunday afternoon and as Coach Menster says, “it was an even game until the turn over bug hit”... “Both our single wing and wishbone formations moved the ball well, but we were not able to punch one in”. Their final was 14-0, and they’ll be at LaSalle this Sunday before returning home for back to back home events. In 5th/6th grade action, Coach Zaruba reports the O’s scored on their first play when Nick Reid threw a completion to Zach March for a 55 yard touch down. March scored again in the second quarter on a fullback dive from 2 yards out, and Will Strait had an interception in the fourth but they couldn’t capitalize. The boys fell 26-12. HULETT NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Springville Senior Jake Hulett was named this weeks 8 man player of the week by Iowa Network Services and Springville Co-Op Telephone Association. Hulett caught 4 passes for 94 yards and 2 touch downs in Friday’s rout of Central City. The Oriole’s defeated the Wildcats 49-14 in the Homecoming Game. Hulett is the son of Alexis and Kevin Hulett.

NISSEN WINS ATHLETE OF THE WEEK AWARD

KCRG TV-9 was at Allison Field last Thursday to tape their weekly Athlete of the Week Footage. Scott Saville was on site, a bit more reserved than we may have expected, but nonetheless, cameras were rolling and Junior Elias Nissen was the star attraction. Nissen, who repeatedly puts up impressive numbers, won the

contest with the help of Springville voters. After the questions and the footage was taped, it was time for the contest—the antics we look forward to the most. This week Saville, most likely intimidated with the size of Nissen, chose an ice cream cone making contest, one none of us expected. It was up to the cashier at Casey’s to determine the winner and sadly, she went with Saville, who it seemed had quite a bit of experience, but still, it was a fun time. Great recognition for a great Community.

In five games, Hulett has scored 4 TD’s, made 5 solo sacks, assisted on 4 more, averaged 4.5 yards a carry AND he has been seen filling water bottles… simply put, the kid does it all.

HOOGLAND— STILL SHAVING Seconds that is—the Senior bested her 2011 time for the annual Anamosa meet last Saturday, finishing in 17:05. Coach Pershing reports that “the weather was cold and windy. Many of the runners showed their inexperience and let the conditions get to them”. Hoogland however, in Pershing’s words is “on track to return to state”. They head to West Dubuque on Thursday and follow that up with a Tuesday meet at West Delaware.
