Important Club Notices

Tuesday Club Meetings

Just a friendly reminder that the FOCC Club Meetings are now going to be held on the second Tuesday of each month.

The decision was made earlier in the year to avoid double booking the hall on Monday nights.

The meetings start at the same time as always - 8:00PM. We hope that this does not cause too many issues for our club members.

Please refer to the schedule opposite for the dates of the proposed meetings.

New Club Membership Cards

The new cards will be available at the next meeting (February) from the Club Secretary. Please enquire on the evening and have your receipts available so the secretary can verify these.

4 THE PRESIDENTS REPORT

It would appear that the FOCC has not come out unscathed from the recent bush fire near Kersbrook.

The FOCC as a whole would have to feel for Irene and Lee (and also to David Miller who lived nearby and is an ex FOCC member who also lost the lot) as they lost their house and its associated contents along with the garage spaces and some of his vehicle collection. Hopefully the Richardson’s and their insurers can work together to rebuild their infrastructure so that the Richardson’s can return to their choice of habitat. A lot of personal memorabilia can-not be replaced but they will be given the opportunity to start again.

The Dakar Rally has been run and won once again in South America.

The Rally or “Raid” in technical terms originally started in Europe and went into the northern sections of the South African continent for the finish.

When the north of the South African continent became politically unstable the Dakar Rally moved to the southern countries in South America. This year sections of Argentina, Chile and Bolivia were used. The TV reports started on Monday the sixth of January and finished on the eighteenth of January. Apart from seeing highly modified cars and utes, buggies, trucks, quads and motorbikes traversing some highly difficult terrain you get to see sections of the terrain as a bit of a travelogue, an interesting half hour of TV each night.

Not too many drivers have an entirely reliable set of wheels under them. One of our members, Garry Kirk works on the mechanicals of one of the vehicles and did the Dakar as a mechanic for a Toyota ute built by “Overdrive” and only one of the vehicles built by Overdrive. The driver Geoff Olholm is based on the Gold Coast. Their vehicle number was 331 in 2015 and was not listed in the final results which means they were out of the rally after one of the stages. Robby Gordon (I would have to be interested in a quick American with Gordon in his name) builds and prepares his own vehicle and is very fast but for someone who builds his own vehicle and cut his teeth on the Baja races he and his team had a lot of niggling technical problems and finished 19th of 67 finishers.

I have asked Garry on a couple of occasions to talk to the FOCC of his experiences when involved in the long distance rallies but whilst he will talk to me he says he is company shy and could not talk to you as a group. That is a pity as he has a lot of stories to tell.

Toby Price from Australia was one of the stars of the 2015 Dakar. Toby has won the Finke Desert Race in the motorbike section four times. He was given the opportunity by Team Orlen to ride a KTM motorbike and in his first Dakar he rode well enough to get third place overall. Quite a stunning debut. The Team Honda riders had problems with bikes not quite good enough to match the KTM Team. The lead rider in the Honda Team broke his engine on one of the stages and had to be towed to the finish of the stage by one of the other Team Honda bikes. They took the engine out of bike one. They took the engine out of bike two and put it in bike one. They took the engine out of bike three and put it in bike two. Why did they not just put engine three in bike one? Perhaps Honda had prepared the engines differently. Bike three was a retirement from the rally. Bikes one and two then got a time penalty for the engine change.

I got a kit to build a 420 mm long model of a Thames Steam Tug for Christmas when I was 17 years old. I built it, put an electric motor in it, set the rudder and it drove in circles when first built. Circa 2000 it was taken out of storage and fitted with a two channel digital proportional radio control unit. I entered it in the recent machinery rally at Milang in the “hand crafted model” section.

There were two other entries in the section neither of which turned up so by default I won the trophy. The trophy looks more expensive than the model! It was good rally with good weather and a nice selection of tractors and vehicles to look at. I took the Tug Boat by way of a change from the stationary steam engines that I would normally take and as the organisers had supplied a boating pond I spent a fair bit of time driving the Tug Boat around and in and out of some floating markers that I took with me. I deserved the trophy for keeping the spectators amused.

Whilst we were down on numbers at our first Tuesday meeting night that was hopefully just symbolic of the January meeting anyhow.

5COLLECTORS CORNER

VINCE'S MODEL AVENUE

I have been collecting model cars since 1998. My first model was a 1:18 1971 XY GTHO in Wild Violet from Biante Models. The latest model is a 1:43 DJR Falcon 2013 Bathurst Retro Greens Tuff from Apex Replicas.

As my collection has grown, I have needed more space in the lounge room or as I call it, Model Avenue. The 1:18’s are displayed according to model, XR Falcon to XE Falcon, AU Falcon to FG Falcon, Coupe’s and Race cars. The 1:43 models are stuffed all together at the moment awaiting another display cabinet of their own.

In the beginning. I just bought everything that was released. Now I am very selective with my models. You can over board very quickly, running out of space and of course money.

Article Written By Vince Clarke

The model avenue has some of the finest cars Ford has ever produced. If I was to pick my favourite car. The 1971 XY GTHO 64E of Allan Moffat. It has his signature and year of racing on the roof.

There are 3 main players in the model market. Biante, Classic Carlectables and now Apex Replicas. Biante were the first to produce Australian Cars in 1:18 Die Cast starting with an XY GTHO Falcon in Vermillion Fire. I have collected models from all 3 producers.

Early models were produced in Die Cast. Biante are still the only ones doing Die Cast as far as I know. Classic Carlectables did Die Cast and have now gone to Resin based models along with Apex. This change has made the models cheaper. The new V8 Supercar range have gone back to solid cars. Their reason is, how often are cars parked with all doors, bonnet or boot open? All early models are produced with opening doors, bonnet, boot and turning front wheels.

Future plans are to make a scale version of a Ford Dealership and course more cabinets.

The market for these models will never end as long as their collectors such as myself buying them. If they continue to produce new models, I guess I will continue to collect them and make room for them in Model Avenue.

6 HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR FUEL ECONOMY - CAR BIBLES

BETTER FUEL ECONOMY1. Your right foot

So simple anyone can do it. If you’re caning it away from the traffic lights, you’re wasting fuel and your mpg will be down. If you’re endurance racing at 80mph on the motorway, you’re wasting fuel. Here’s the thing - your fuel mileage can drop off as much as 15% between driving at or below 65mph and driving above 65mph. Now I love speed as much as the next person but you have to be realistic here - do you want better fuel economy or to get there marginally quicker? I sound like a total wet blanket telling you this of course, but driving slower absolutely will improve your mpg. Why? Because once you get over about 65mph, you’re using more engine power to overcome drag, which means consuming more fuel to do it.

2. Change the octane if you can

Too many people drive around with medium or premium fuel in their tank when they just don’t need to. If your owner’s manual says “regular”, it means it. Putting mid-grade or premium in is just wasting money. Why? Unless you have a high-compression engine which could be prone to detonation (pinking / pinging), you have absolutely no need for high-octane petrol. The only thing that higher octane gives you is less probability of detonation. In high-performance cars with high-compression engines, that means allowing the engine management system to work at peak efficiency but for probably 75% of you, your car will quite happily run on the cheapest petrol you can put in it. Not an improvement in fuel economy per se, but a money saving at least.

3. Use the internet

Again - not so much about improving your mpg as saving money; no matter where you live, there will be one or more internet sites that can provide you with petrol prices in your area. Vote with your money. Buy from the cheap ones, and shun the expensive ones. It’s not improving your mpg, but it is saving you money, and in the long term, that’s what counts here. Apathy in this area is what the petrol companies rely on.

4a. Check your tyre pressures

This is a total no-brainer. Check your tyre pressures regularly - make it part of your sunday routine or something. All motoring sites and magazines tell you the same thing and that’s for a reason. If your tyre pressures are low, you will be increasing the rolling resistance of the tyre on the road and that will be robbing your fuel efficiency - your mileage will be down. So make sure they’re up to manufacturer recommended values (at the very least) and watch your mpg get a little better.

4b. Get low rolling-resistance tyres

You might never have considered this, but manufacturers do make tyres designed for low rolling resistance. This means that there’s less effort required to roll the tyre along the road surface. Less effort means less load on your engine. Less load means better mpg.

When I went for aftermarket alloy wheels and tyres on my Honda Element, my fuel mileage dropped by about 1mpg due simply to the change in tread pattern of the tyres.

5. Get rid of the roof rack

You go biking or skiing at the weekends. Great. When you’re commuting to work, that empty roof rack is adding aerodynamic drag to your car. More drag means more power to overcome it, which means worse mpg. Take it off when you’re not using it. Same goes for those ‘aerodynamic’ roof boxes - if you’re not using it, get rid of it. Yes they look aerodynamic but the fact of the matter is they do induce drag. And to be honest, they look silly. Hey - I know it means getting up and doing something rather than just routinely getting in your car and driving off but we’re talking about fuel mileage here. mpg. Fuel economy. It’s all to do with money. Be lazy? Or save money?

6. Change your air filter

Out of sight, out of mind. I’m guilty of this. Your air filter is what protects your engine from ingesting all the dust, dirt and crap in the air. If it’s doing its job well, it will clog up, much like the bag of a vacuum cleaner. Once it clogs up, your engine has a harder time sucking air through it. To compensate for the reduced airflow, the engine management system will richen up the mixture, using more fuel to keep the engine running smoothly. Replace your air filter once a year and you’ll guarantee better mileage. So why am I guilty of this? At the time of writing I change the three-year-old filter in my car and my mpg jumped by 2.5 overnight. On my car that equated to a 13% improvement for a small outlay. Duh! This is one of the easiest ones to do yourself too. Go out to your local parts store and look through their catalog to find the right filter. It will normally be a simple matter of some plastic or metal clips to get the airbox apart and then you can replace the old duffer with the new hotness.

7. Change your oil and oil filter

Whilst you won’t see any massive improvement by changing your oil and filter, you’re ensuring that your engine is keeping its ‘fresh blood’.

8. Get new spark plugs

Spark plugs work in an incredibly hostile environment. If you’ve got more than 30,000 miles on yours, change them. Fresh plugs that aren’t covered in carbon desposits will certainly help you in your quest to become a fuel miser.

9. Ultrasonic cleaning for your fuel injectors

The only surefire way to clean your fuel injectors is to have them removed and given an ultrasonic bath. This is like those jewellery cleaners you might have seen. Basically it’s a small tub filled with detergent solution that is hit with ultra high frequency vibrations or sound waves. The net effect is that any carbon deposits are shaken off the fuel injectors. Clean injectors give a more even fuel-air mix which results in a more predictable burn in the cylinder, which will contribute to improved petrol mileage. If your injectors have never been done, or you’ve got more than 60,000 miles on them, consider getting the professionally cleaned. It won’t be cheap but it’s cheaper than a new car (by a huge margin) and it will help your mpg.

10. Remapping your ECU - Chipping & Tuning

Expensive one this, but it might be worth investigating. For the most part, chipping or remapping your engine management computer would normally be done to improve performance.

It is possible however to go the other way - trade off some performance in exchange for better fuel mileage.

7ON A LIGHTER NOTE BY MR GULLIBLE

What a start to the year!

I didn’t bother to stay up on New Year’s Eve as I have worked out that the New Year will come in without me. That left me fresh to get some tasks done around the yard. The first day of 2015 was like so many others and went without a hitch.

The next day started much the same and I went shopping early afternoon thinking it was a hot day and some ice cream would be nice. A phone call from a neighbour was all it took to change a normal day into a catastrophic day. “There is a fire the other side of the hill” he said “not sure which way it is going”. Well we all know that fire will come from the north east and this fire was to the South so continued shopping till Mrs Gullible rang to say warnings are coming up on her phone. (Include a group of expletives here). We arranged to meet at our sons house, leave a car and head for the hills. By the time we got there our normal route was blocked so we needed to use some back roads to get home. Fired up the Galaxie and grabbed a handful of stuff, clothes mainly. When the water bomber went over that close that we could see the pilot we figured we should not be there so we headed out and to safety.

ON A LIGHTER NOTE BY MR GULLIBLE

Article Written By Lee Richardson

I figure about a half hour later the fire had finished having its way with our property and headed on through the next 4 properties ignoring all defending attempts in its path. The result was total destruction of five properties in a row.

Score card; Removed from harm’s way was Mr & Mrs Gullible, three cars, a cat, some clothes and a few personal items. Lost was everything else but, and I am not sure why, a car trailer, the 42 Jailbar (some damage but still restorable) a small trailer with the FOCC Marquees in it and one garden gnome.

Deceased are: Ford 59 Galaxie project car, the 290kw engine and 6speed box and running gear for it, a 1970 f100, Ford Falcon 62, Morris commercial 1952 truck and the Ford F700 tipper. Nothing much more to say about the fire at this time but all energies are getting put into rebuilding.

Car 1: The Galaxie Skyliner

The Galaxie is officially on the road with still a few things to do. All the rubbers still to put on were lost in the fire and some trim pieces so further works are on hold till I have them replaced and a place to do the work on it. So I expect not much done for a few months.

The trim repair will also need to wait for some time.

Truck 1, F700

Gone forever (rust in piece)

Truck 2, 1942 Jail Bar

Poor scorched truck will need to be put on hold for a while till a workshop can be sorted for it. She is going to need to stay in the paddock for now as all the tyres have been burnt off and not being able to put new tyres on the old rims, it will be too hard to move.

The tyres and timber were burnt away but the cab inside and engine bay were untouched, The cab outside has blistered paint but the metal looks as if it did not over heat. Amazing as the truck in front and behind have been gutted. Perhaps it was the old thick steel or maybe the truck just wants to be put back on the road.
