Wednesday night. Vanessa Gilbert-son, from Dowell, says police are not necessarily linking the theft to the other recent incidents. She says the $12,000 ute was found stripped of its engine, radiator, tail-gate, spare tyre and tool box, as

well as having it’s dashboard and windows smashed up. “We’re not happy, they’re just mongrels, the in-surance company believe it was tar-geted for the engine because it not a common vehicle to be stolen.”

for permission to set up his tools in a shed. That included a petition signed by residents of three Stoke retirement villages. So Oceania did another backflip and decided to act. The company’s CEO, Earl Gasparich, authorised a new shed to be built and was at the village on Wednesday to offically open it.Rex says for the last 15 years of his working life he was a dial-a-hand-yman, doing anything and every-

thing, and in his retirement, creat-ing folding tables and stools has become his craft. “I think as much as anything else it gives us something to do, I’m sorry, but I get sick of sitting watching TV or reading a book,” says Rex. Rex, along with six other experi-enced residents, will be on hand to supervise when other residents are using machines. He says there has been interest from residents of Oceania’s two other Stoke villages and even a handful of female resi-dents.

Helicopter saves hypothermic tramper: A 24 year old wom-an and a 27 year old man from Christchurch were rescued from the Boulder lake track behind Takaka, last Saturday. After entering the track late in the day, the couple had prob-lems finding the route in dark-ness and horrendous weather caused one of the party to be-come hypothermic. The Rescue Helicopter was sent in after the tramper’s condition began to deteriorate.

Tasman in running for high-est sun hours: Niwa’s Appleby sunshine monitoring station has identified the area as having some of the highest sunshine

hours in New Zealand so far this year. Appleby has received 1173 hours of sunshine hours, plac-ing it third, just 23 hours shy of sunshine leader Whakatane on 1200 hours and Blenheim with 1182 hours.

Sounds air extends service: Sounds Air are launching a

new service next Monday with a route running to and from Paraparaumu twice every week-day. The journey will cut travel time for commuters destined to Palmerston North after Air New Zealand cut their service from Nelson in November last year. The flight to Paraparaumu takes 40 minutes, followed by an hours drive to Palmerston North.

Out-going museum CEO Pe-ter Millward says the region should have a museum under one roof, not “five miles apart”, as it is now.Peter announced his retirement last Friday after seven years as the chief executive at the Nel-son Provincial Museum. Currently, the museum has two buildings, the research facility at Isel Park in Stoke and the ex-hibition and education facility at Trafalgar St.He told Nelson Weekly that the museum’s current buildings are its most pressing issue. “The research facility is unfin-ished business from my point of view and something needs to be done urgently. When they moved the exhibition and edu-cation part into town they ac-tually broke the museum into two pieces, and some of the problems we face now are un-doubtedly caused by that.”He says having the museum in Trafalgar St is important, so he’d like to see the research fa-cility moved close by. “But it’s not going to happen without some capital input and the two councils are both fac-ing their own infrastructure is-sues, but the museum is now in

the position to help itself.”During Peter’s rein, the muse-um has paid back $1.5 million of interest-bearing debt. But it still owes an interest-free loan to both Nelson City and Tas-man District councils. At 67, Peter says he’s not the right man to lead a major fun-draising project to make a joint facility happen. “But there is no question that if it is co-located with its own archives it has greater potential than one that operates under separate roofs, especially when they’re five miles apart, like ours.”Peter’s retirement was an-nounced along with that of the chair of the Tasman Bays Herit-age Trust, Terry Horne.Current deputy chair, Aaron

Brown, has been appointed Terry’s successor. Terry says that Peter has lifted the public image of the muse-um, overseen some outstand-ing exhibitions, and leaves the museum in a sound financial position with increasing ad-mission numbers.Peter says his proudest moment in the job was at this year’s Gal-lipoli commemorations. “The way people in the city got involved with everything to do with Anzac Day has been fan-tastic. Right from people iden-tifying photos that have been in Nelson Weekly to people com-ing into the museum and say-ing ‘there’s my father’s name on the wall’. It was humbling and that whole project was phe-nomenal.”

The “living and breathing collection” of classic motorbikes on Haven Rd will take another almighty breath this week when 12 new bikes are revealed. The incredibly rare bikes, worth around $2 million, were recently bought from auction houses in the United States and shipped to Nelson, where they were reassembled and are now ready for display.NZ Classic Motorcycles operations manager John Shand says the bikes will be unveiled at a special evening next week. “They came from auction houses in the US. There was an old guy, his name was EJ Cole, and he was 89 years old. He had 215 motorbikes and found out he couldn’t get his leg across most of them, so sold them.”John says some of the current bikes will make way for the new additions, in keeping with owners Tom and Heather Sturgess’ wishes of a “living collection”.

“We don’t call this place a museum, we hate that word, because that’s where you find fossils. This is a collection and it’s a living collection. You’re never going to come and get bored, there will always be new bikes and new attractions.”Included in the new additions is a “Ner-A-Car”. It was designed for ladies so they could step through it. The biggest attraction will most likely be the Britten “pre-curser”, the bike built before the iconic Britten. John says very few people have seen it up close. “This is the bike that nearly won at Daytona in 1991. But the race winner on the warm down lap did this big wheelie, looked at the Kiwi riders and said, ‘ha ha ha, your bike isn’t fast enough’. “John Britten was rather peeved at this antic so went away to develop a faster bike – the Britten. You know the rest.”NZ Classic Motorcycles is open to the public six days a week.

Craig and Kellie Hamilton may be the faces of a winning local business, but they’re also the faces of a generous and supportive team who are pas-sionate about giving back to their community. Craig, Kellie and their team have recently won several major awards at the Mike Pero sales meet-ing earlier this month. While their success can be attributed to a dedi-cated and talented team of sales people and administration staff, they also be-lieve their superior reputation stems from a supportive community, and it’s this appreciation that has driven their many local spon-sorship projects. Number one on the list was to spon-sor the Mike Pero Trolley Derby, which created a day of fun for eve-ryone speeding down Nelson’s Collingwood St earlier this year. “If someone doesn’t sponsor these things, then they won’t happen,” says Craig, and thanks to Mike Pero locally in Richmond, many more organisations are able to continue their great services, such as the Tasman Swimming Club, Nel-son Golf Club, Tasman Tennis Club, the local go-kart track and the motorsports young racers, plus, Mike Pero have also taken on the naming sponsor-ship of the Mike Pero Giants basketball team.

Craig, Kellie and their team are also involved with the Mike Pero Foundation, a charitable trust that aims to make a difference in the lives of the sick and needy. The funds raised through the trust pre-dominantly go towards helping provide those suf-fering from serious medical conditions with special experiences or assistance required. The founda-

tion gains its funds from the support of Mike Pero busi-ness owners like Craig and Kellie and their team, and those who think they would like to apply for funding can do so through the foundations website at www.mikeperofounda-tion.com. If that’s not enough, the local Mike Pero

Real Estate and Mortgage Franchise owners are also giving away a car worth $11,000, in associa-tion with their Giants sponsorship. The winner will be decided with a free throw shoot off at the last home game from amongst those who qualified at previous games. Their commitment to giving back to the community complements their dedica-tion to providing second to none real estate ser-vices, so for more information on either, give the team a call today.

A driver clocked doing more than 150kmh says she was late to pick up her Thai takeaways. That driver received an immediate roadside suspension for 28 days and will be appearing in the Nelson District Court shortly.

Police say an increasing number of driv-ers are taking unacceptable risks with speed and as a result a number have had their licences suspended for demerit points or had roadside suspensions.Senior Sergeant Grant Andrews says over Queen’s Birthday weekend speed-

ing drivers was easily the biggest issue officers faced on the road. “Some of the speeds we have detected recently are just ludicrous. There are a number of drivers on the road putting other inno-cent road users’ lives at extreme risk and they have no right to do that,” he says.

A Richmond school was broken into and had eight i-Pads stolen over Queen’s Birthday weekend. Two St Paul’s classrooms were broken into and eight i-Pads were stolen. Principal John Dorman says the only people disadvantaged by the situation are the children who need i-Pads the most.“It means we haven’t got enough devices to share between the students, some children bring their own devices to school, but it is those kids who don’t own devices who are the ones that will really suffer because of it, it is very disappointing” says John.A teacher saw some teenage boys hanging around the school on

Sunday and other teacher noticed that someone had tried to wrench open a window on the Monday, but it was Monday night that the school alarms went off and the i-Pads were discovered missing.

Friends and supporters of Alex Renton gathered outside Nelson MP Nick Smith’s office yesterday morning, in a vigil protest in support of the importation and use of medicinal cannabinoid oil. Alex, a 19-year-old former Nayland Col-lege pupil, has been in an induced coma in Wellington since April 8. He was suffering from flu-like symptoms on April 4 and was rushed to hospital after experiencing sei-zures. He is suffering from brain inflammation known as encephalitis. It is unknown

what the cause of this is. Family friend Liz Goodall attended the protest and says the family is trying to get the cannabinoid oil into the country as it has been shown to be effective in treating similar patients over-seas. “They have done research on it and they know it has made a lot of difference to some people out there. The drugs they are using at the moment are not making much of a difference, they are sedating him because of his seizures but it’s not making the difference the family really wants to happen. If it was your child, wouldn’t you try anything?” Nayland College pupil Eva Hansen says

she has been friends with Alex for three years and is attending the protest in recog-nition of all the support Alex has given her. “He’s been my role model for those three years, he’s always looking out for me and

I’m always looking out for him.” Nick Smith was unable to meet the pro-testers as he was in Wellington, but office representative Nan Ward read a letter writ-ten to the family on his behalf. “I read the note from the clinician, but it does not go so far as to give any confidence that such medicinal cannabis oil would benefit Alex. For me to make such an exceptional case to the Minister, I really do need a specialist saying that this is the best course of medi-cine.”

A group of community-minded cooks are helping people through tough times with their very own version of meals on wheels. The group of 20, featuring 10 adults and 10 youth, met at Des-tiny Church and were kicking around ideas about how they could help the community, when the idea of “Nomin-eat” was set-tled upon.Nomin-eat asks for nominations through its Facebook page for those who could use a free meal. The group then cooks a batch of 50 meals and delivers it to those who they feel are the most de-serving.Founding member Joni Nacagi-levu says last month they cooked enough lasagne for 50 main meals

and then delivered them over the next week. He says nominees included those who were recovering from sur-gery, solo parents with plenty of kids to feed and some who were just going through a tough time financially.“Sometimes, people just need that hand and hopefully this can just take that pressure off. It’s not a hand-out where we pity them, it’s just a hand-along,” he says.Joni says the project is funded by its members at the moment but he’d like to attract sponsor-ship in the future to help it grow. He says nominations are open for two weeks, then the group get together one night and cook enough food for the 50 meals and

the rest of the week is spent deliv-ering them.If anyone would like to nominate

a person simply head along to the group’s Facebook page. If you’d like to donate food products or

money to help the group fund the programme, email Joni on [email protected]

Nelson Young Professionals are after some new committee members, with the current president set to leave the region.Michelle Byczkow has been the head of the networking group for two years, but is heading off to London and says the group would like some fresh blood.

“The nature of the group means that we have people come and go, so we’re looking for the next wave of young professionals.”Nelson Young Professionals was founded in 2009 and encourages anyone who would like to meet new people or enjoy the events they host to come along.

The biggest event on the NYP calendar is the winter ball that last year attracted around 150 people.Michelle says when she arrived in Nelson to work at a local law firm she knew three people, all very loosely. “But since I joined NYP I’ve meet

some great friends and it’s given me a

whole network of people to hang out with.”Currently, NYP has six committee members, Michelle says she’d like to see that grow to around seven or eight. “New people bring in fresh ideas and we’ve had a great committee for three years now, but some new people would be great.”To find out more about NYP see www.nyp.co.nz or email [email protected]

Slot car racing is making a comeback, with New Zealand’s biggest ready-to-run slot car event being held in Hope this weekend.Tony Cook has always had a passion for slot car racing, it started back in 1967 when he stumbled across a commercial raceway in Bolt Road, Tahu-nanui. From that moment on, he was hooked and used to bike down to the raceway and pay fifty cents to race cars all after-noon. Over the years, time and family commitments got in the way, but the love of racing nev-er left him.Once a very popular hobby and sport, sadly, there are no commercial race tracks in New Zealand nowadays at all, however Tony says the sport is making a resurgence. “Around 12 years ago, the Nel-son Slot Car Racing Club went into hiatus, but a friend ap-proached me about four years ago and said that we should start it up again and the club awoke from its slumber and it just all grew from there,” says Tony. There are now 18 members in the Nelson Slot Car Club, with

other members from outside the region travelling to Tony’s property in Hope to take part regularly. Last year Tony organised the first NSR Challenge Cup which saw 27 people racing, the event proved so popular that he de-cided to put it on again this year and now has over fifty rac-ers entered. “There hasn’t been a slot car racing event with that many entries since the late 1960s. It involves cars racing against others that are identical in terms of wheels, tyres and

specs, and rules are set which makes for very competitive racing,” says Tony.Tony believes that the resur-gence in popularity can be at-tributed towards people aged between 40 years and 60 years who were involved in slot car racing when they were younger taking it up again in their later years when they have more time and money available. The NSR Challenge Cup II will be held this weekend at 537 Main Rd, Hope. For more info phone Tony on 021 73 9383.

Age is no barrier to sport, in fact it is a prerequisite for players at-tending Table Tennis Nelson's social seniors group at Saxton Stadium with their oldest mem-ber, Lionel Wells, turning 95 in October. The group, which meets every Monday and Friday morning, has about 45 players enjoying the exercise and social interaction. Although many of the players are new to the sport, that certainly can't be said about Lionel, who has been playing for an incredible 82 years. And that probably makes him the most experienced player in the country."I started playing when I was 11 or 12 and haven't stopped," Li-onel, who is a retired fisherman,

says. "When I started in Nelson we played in the Sports Hall, but we've moved around since then to places like the YMCA and Ngawhatu, and now Saxton Sta-dium."I used to play competitively. I was ranked No2 in my age-group in New Zealand at one stage, but now I just play because it's good exercise and it's a good way of meeting people."However, Lionel hasn't finished his competitive playing days just yet, competing in the last two South Island Masters games in Nelson, winning silver in the mixed doubles with Thelma Mathieson and two bronze med-als in 2013. And he hopes to line up in this year's Master Games which start in Nelson on Septem-ber 26."I hope to play at this one as well

as long as the chiropractor can put my hip right. If I'm fit, I'll be playing mixed doubles with my daughter [Lynette Goulding]."Table Tennis Nelson committee member Kay Hazeldine says the social senior's session is proving

popular and has grown over the years. The majority of players are "50-plus" with a wide range of abilities."We even have a couple of players in wheelchairs and they are pretty handy," she says.

Table Tennis Nelson's social sen-iors play at Saxton Stadium on Monday from 9am to 12pm, and 9am to 11.25am on Fridays. En-try costs $4 on Friday and $5 on Monday. Morning tea is provid-ed. All welcome.

LIONS DONATE TO NEPAL: Nelson Host Lions have donated $1500 to the relief fund in Nepal. The money was from the club’s fundraising throughout the year. Club member Colin Borcovsky says the club’s first golf tournament, 32 years ago, was to raise funds to

build schools in Nepal, so it’s nice they can help once again.

FISHING SPONSOR: Last month, Nelson Weekly reported on a fishing competition hosted by Fraser Logging that raised money for the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter. Included in the article was a list of sponsors, but one of the major sponsors, Goughs, was mistakenly left off.

Stoke School held a mufti day to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House which has become a second home for Angela and her

daughter Kayla, who suffers from a number of illnesses, one being chronic lung disease. Kayla’s previous school, Kiwi Treasures Preschool, also

held a fun dress-up day to raise money. Kayla wasn’t meant to reach the age of five and has

been through 12 surgeries since she was born. However, while she is doing well at the moment,

winter can be a scary time as a simple cold could prove fatal. Photo: Jessie Johnston.

Habitat for Humanity, Tuesday, May 26: Habitat for Humanity is grateful for the response from Nelsonians towards their second-hand homeware store. Chairman of the Nelson branch, Rob Silcock, says donations have been better than expected and they are growing a good collection of homeware items from beds, sofas, tables, chairs, dishwashers, ovens and even an old organ. There is still a lot of work to be done, with the manager’s position to be filled from one of 13 applicants and then the homeware items need to be sorted, ready for sale. Organisers would like to say thank you to Nelsonians for their donations.

Founder’s Book Fair, Tuesday, June 2: Organisers of the Founders Book Fair were thrilled with this year’s results. The fair is a major fundraiser for the park and now the total has come in; a list is being compiled of projects that the park would like to undertake. There were 3000 banana boxes of books that locals managed to work their way through from May 30 until June 7, leaving just 100 books unsold. This year’s fair managed to raise over $128,000 and organisers would like to thank those who donated books, their loyal customers, and volunteers; many of whom were completely new to helping run the fair.

Nayland Kindy, Tuesday, May 5: Organisers of Nayland Kindergarten’s annual fundraiser were overwhelmed with the support of local businesses and said it was great seeing local ladies and mothers having an enjoyable night out. The Girls Night Out! and Fashion Show is the kindergartens major fundraiser for the year which managed to raise just under $5000, beating last year’s total of $3000. Around 160 people attended the evening with funds going towards the development of the children’s outdoor area.

“It’s like a married man wanting to marry another wife before he’s even divorced,” yells one man across a room full of people crowded around tables. He is one of nine people, in a room of 45, who opposed changing the New Zealand flag at last week’s Flag Consideration Meeting in Tahunanui. The rest of the room is made up people supporting a new flag and fence-sitters as they discuss what a flag means to them.Of the 45 in attendance, eight flew the current flag at their own home, six flew it at their business and three worked for a government department that flies the flag.

Flag Consideration Panel deputy chair, Kate de Goldi, sat at one table divided in fierce conversation.“Our table had bracing discussion, it was vigorous, divided and heated, and very good for me to hear as a panel member. You have to sort of anatomise their passion when you’re charged with listening to the community and working out what the various streams of arguments are.”Nelson RSA president Barry Pont is one of the nine in the room opposed to changing the flag. “We [the RSA] are totally opposed to changing the flag at the moment, mainly because it’s what we’ve gone overseas and

fought under. It’s also the way they are going about it. Yes, we’re a democracy but

the question should be ‘yes, you want a new flag or no, you don’t, not ‘which one do you like best?’, that’s not democracy, they’re jumping the gun.”Tim Bayley has submitted his own design for the new flag along with partner Janet Southwick. “We lived in Canada for a number of years in the seventies. We saw the flag they had then when it was very flash and new. Canada hasn’t fallen over, it’s gone from strength to strength and it’s one of the most recognisable flags worldwide.”The education process will go right up until the referendums take place at the end of 2015 and beginning of 2016.

Local First National wins big at awards

Real estate is what First National Real Estate Richmond and Nelson does best, and they have the awards to prove it. The entire office recently took part in the First National Australasian Convention in Queens-town this year, and every real estate agent that went came back an award winner. Four hundred offices from Australia and 59 from New Zealand gathered for the annual con-vention, which is not only an educational event on the First National calendar but recognises the hard work and performance of Australasia’s real estate agents. “It’s down to the dedication of the individu-als who have performed so well, and it means that there are hundreds of satisfied buyers and sellers who have interacted with First National. Our thanks go to them for trusting us, because without those people we wouldn’t all be award-winning real estate agents,” says First National Real Estate Richmond and Nelson director, Mark Rumsey.

Wondering where your local access equipment experts have disappeared too? Don’t worry they haven’t gone far and they’re still more than capable of helping you out when you need excellent service to reach those high up places. From their previous head quarters in Wakatu Industrial Estate, Access Hire have consistently provided second-to-none service, but a change in location to 9 Vivian Pl in Tahunanui has meant they are now situated alongside their partnering businesses, Safe Site Fencing and Moveables. However, everything else has remained exactly as before, with the same staff and same service that their clients have become accustomed to.

Access Hire is 100 per cent locally-owned and operated, and those who

make up the company are dedicated to providing their customers with nothing but the best in access equipment. The team are experts and professionals in their field and will go to any lengths to help you get whatever job you have, done. This includes recommending the perfect piece of equipment to make quick work of any height that is restricting you and providing you with equipment that is not only good quality, but well serviced and maintained. No matter what project you have in mind, they guarantee you’ll receive the best machine to safely complete your job, no matter where or what height. So what exactly do Access Hire have in their yard? Whether you need a scissor lift, cherry picker or knuckle boom; if your job site is out of reach, they have a machine just waiting to assist you. There is a selection of electric scissor lifts from six to ten metres, rough terrain scissor lifts up to 12 metres and electric or diesel knuckle booms up to 21 metres.

For the Access Hire team, convenience is everything, and they make it their number one goal to help make your project as easy as possible, which means making it simple to get started. Depending on your requirements, they can organise to have your equipment transported by their own delivery team to the site when you need it, and when you’re done, just give them a call to come and pick it up, it’s as easy as that. If you want to transport the equipment yourself, some machines can be taken via trailer or towed behind a suitable vehicle, just call ahead to sort out the best way to get the equipment you require. Another important thing to know is that Access Hire can organise to have Elevated Work Platform (EWP) Training courses so you feel safe when

Stolen bikes concern police:Husband and I rescued two from a creek in Richmond on the

weekend, have taken them into Rich-mond police station. Tina Guy.

Rate rise 'disappointing':It is disappointing that even those Nelson councillors who

campaigned at the election on keep-ing rate rises reasonable have opted for increases well above the inflation rate. This is an attack on the middle class and undermines the low-wage and low in-come ratepayer constituency in Nelson. With only a very few exceptions, like Cr. Tim Skinner, councillors voted for almost every non-core service spending item to finance pet projects and wish lists. Meanwhile, our infrastructure is badly in need of improvement or repair. As long as councillors are voted in with attention only to name recognition, Nelson will get the local government it deserves, and the rates will double again in less than ten years. Dan McGuire.

Modellers Pond, should it stay or go:It just needs a good clean and to stay cleaned, imagine how beau-

tiful it could look. Diana Sim.

Keep it an area kids love to go to and see the ducks and other

birds. It's been there since I was a kid. Just keep it clean. Aleisha Brunell.

Keep it!Mike Roberts.

Filled in and used, keeping it that way is silly as no one uses it.

Donna Jan.

Can't believe the council have still not upgraded this! It would

be lovely fixed up with some clean water for kids to float boats, etc. Totally all for it getting done up. Kristyn Musson.

I think it's important to keep it there. It's far too easy to get rid of

things when, with a bit of effort, they can be revived! We need to do everything we can to coax youngsters outdoors. Come to that, I know a lot of adults who enjoy it, too. Philippa Foes-Lamb.

It has so many great memories for lots of people. Keri Williams.

Keep it and clean it. Shane Scott.

Let the members of the model-lers have a free hand to use com-

mon sense to fix the problem with a lit-tle help from the ratepayers. John Sauer.

Cheapest entertainment for chil-dren in town, please don't ruin

it. Why not put paid workers in there to help clean it out. Kimberley Saunders.

A concrete pool for toddlers, like at the botanical gardens in Chch,

would be great!!!! Lisa Dudley.

When it is a pond it can't be used that much because it can't

be kept clean, fill it in. Or make it an in-ground trampoline. Do something dif-ferent with it. I have never really seen the pond clean, make it more appealing by making it something people can use. Even a small skate bowl. Ema Posa.

Fill half of it in so more room and better area for putting boats.

Divide remaining pond area into more and challenging exciting water way for boat users. Keep it clean and you have a fun place to use. Julie Roberts.

Wakefield's Robert Stuart may be the official trainer of Dana Dawn which won the More FM Mobile Pace at the Nelson Harness Racing Club's Winter meeting on Sunday, but it was his wife Sue who played a key role in the win.The Stuarts completed a suc-cessful meeting with Dana Dawn finishing second on the first day before winning by three-quarters of length on Sunday. It was Dana Dawn's first win from nine starts and Robert says Sue was largely responsible for preparing the three-year-old gelding for its maiden win."I'd been really busy at work up until we finished in May, so Sue was doing all the track work with him – it's been a good partnership," Robert says. "Sue deserves most of the credit and so does (driver) Samantha Ottley - she's driven him four times now and all four have been great drives."Robert and Sue race Dana Dawn, who they lease from Teapot Valley owner-breeder Wayne Jennings. Wayne quali-

fied the horse before leasing him to the Stuarts last August and Robert says "he has always shown a bit of ability but just needed time to mature".Waimea West owner-breeder George Hill also had success when Cullen's Lady recorded her maiden win on the first day of the meeting. However, Cul-lens Lady couldn't back up on Sunday, finishing sixth in the Jennex Handicap Pace, one place ahead of George's other horse and race favourite Ari-zona Atom. The day improved for Stoke race fans Sue and Paul Bromell who won a family holiday to Hanmer Springs in the Lucky Losing Ticket Draw. Things

were looking bleak for Sue and Paul, who had only two small collects between them, when one of Sue's many losing tick-ets was drawn out of the Car Company car after race 10."I put at least 15 tickets in the draw," I'd only had one small collect on the Cup but winning the trip makes up for that," Sue says. The feature race for the day, the Nelson Pine Industries Nelson Winter Cup, was won by Des-tined For Glory who also won the Winter Cup Prelude on Friday. Destined for Glory was driven by Methven reinsman Ricky May, who had a remark-able seven wins at the two-day meeting.

Waimea and Wanderers march onThere's a clear theme emerging from this sea-son's Car Company divi-sion one rugby competi-tion – it's a two horse race.Waimea Old Boys and Wanderers once again had big wins on the weekend, disposing of Marist (30-17) and Stoke (55-9) re-spectively, making this Sat-urday's clash between the two even more exciting. Add the fact the match will also double as the Tasman Trophy final and rugby fans need to look no fur-ther than Jubilee Park this Saturday for the game of the round. The clash between the two heavy-weights of Nelson rugby kicks off at 3pm. In the other match of the round, Kahurangi beat Nelson 23-13.

Winter is hotting up!Fishing around top of the south area in winter is awesome. It seems to get better and better as it gets colder. If you don't have a reasonable size boat to get up round Durville island or out further-a-field, then book a charter trip to get out to the unreal scenery and variety that the outer sounds areas have to offer. In early winter, some of the species breed and other go into deeper wa-ters to "hibernate" in the water that actually stays warmer the deeper it is.This is when fish school up in huge numbers in areas of substantial food sources and their feeding habits change to adapt to the conditions.Kingfish, snapper, groper, trevally, tarakihi, john dory, warehou are just some of the species that frequent the same areas at this time.Get some advice from the local fish-ing shop staff, buy some reason-able gear and get out and enjoy the Tasman Bay off season, "out in the deep".So if someone asks you to go fishing

out deep, then take a quick cement pill and get up early, get your ther-mals on, grab some expensive jigs and sinkers and have an awesome day out!If you catch some good fish that is a bonus. Then offer to pay your way with travel costs, as its not cheap to own a boat and tow vehicle nowa-days.Winter weather can provide some very settled days and this is reflect-ed when those days fall during the week and I hear a mate say we will be the only boat out there, and that night they report back to say 12-20 boats up there. With all this increased pressure on our local fishery, I must encourage fishos to only take what they need for a feed for them and their imme-diate family. Some days fishing can be hot, and not every fish needs to be taken back home, with catch and release another great option, includ-ing the 'feel good factor' of watching those hard fighting fish head back down to the depths after a great bat-tle. Enjoy our 'hot' winters.

Federal young guns learn tough lessonThe young guns of Federal Black had the chances, but not the nous, to overcome Marlborough side Arotea Kiwi at Saxton Field on Saturday. The four-team premier grade is dominated by Tasman this year, which is undefeated after three rounds, but has had a couple of close calls with draws against Federal Titans. Tasman are fa-vourites to take out the title this year, according to Nelson Hockey development officer Craig Brett. “Tasman are a strong team with guys who have national hockey league experience, so they are the team to beat.”

Federal Titans are made up mainly of older play-ers, with the club’s other

team, the top emerging talent. Last year Federal won the competition with a com-bination of the two teams. There are five senior mens hock-ey grades in Nelson and five wo-mens grades. In the women’s top grade, Tas-man and Federal are the two top teams.

This window was designed and crafted by JE (Jackie) MacDonald (Artist), Assista

Nelson’s rich history of characters, conflicts and celebrations is detailed

in this third volume of stories featuring discovery and survival,

heartbreak and triumph. These stories are about real people in real

situations and in some cases the truth really is stranger than fiction.

Whether you are picking this up for just a quick read, or are reading

Happy Valley The early suburban North settle-ment quickly spilled over Gentle Annie into what became known as Happy Valley, now Hira and the nearby Teal and Lud Valleys. The name Happy Valley came from the

first surveyors who set up an alco-hol still there to ease their solitude. One of the first settlers was sawyer Isaac Harvey on Cable Bay Road. His bullocks hauled timber over Gentle Annie on a less than easy road.

There is a definite top four and bottom four in Nelson Netball’s Senior 2 competition. With four rounds of the sev-en complete, there are four unbeaten teams – Jacks Ale House, Prices Pharmacy Sil-ver and Jacks Lime are sitting on 16 points with the perfect record, while Rival Jade have 14 points with three wins and a draw. Prices Pharmacy Red sit in fifth place and have been ever so close in three of their games, gaining a bonus point for finishing within three goals of the winner. It was Prices who made the bet-ter start in their game against Rival Jade, scoring four of the first five goals. Goal shoot Di Wells made a great start as she netted seven from eight in the

first stanza.Rival are fortunate in having a “grand pair of bookends” with evergreen Judy Totoro wearing the GK bib and Su-san Mathieson the GS one – a massive amount of experience to anchor both the defensive and offensive ends. Susan was the master as she converted 26 from 40, many from long range, while goal attack Linda Kotua was content to take on the role of a third feeder.Rival had their noses in front 9-8 at the first break, however both teams went tooth and nail to share the spoils in the sec-ond period. Rival played their

best defensively when they lim-ited Prices to only four goals in the third quarter, when Di’s ra-dar went astray. Rival’s Janine McCarthy had good body posi-tioning for the rebound to deny Prices a second opportunity.Prices goal defence Rachel Potrykus worked tirelessly – she read play well, gained two clean intercepts, and a number of deflections and was a power house rebounder as she had eight to her name. She was also a competent ball carrier, while wing defence Sheryl Hockey was keen to attack the ball.Prices left their best until last when they outscored Rival 8-7, only to come out on the wrong side of the ledger 27-30, however it was enough to gain them a bonus point.

Prices can't topple Rival
