JUST FOR NEW PLAYERSTalk it overBy Brent Manley

The late Ron Andersen was playing in a tournament in Ottawa ON years ago in the days when the negative double was an Alertable convention. After a 1♣ opening on Andersen’s left, his partner made a jump overcall of 2♠. Andersen’s RHO doubled. Andersen stewed for a while before saying, “At the clubs where I play, we Alert our negative doubles.” Said opener, “At our club, we don’t play negative doubles.” The result: minus 800 for Andersen and partner.

What’s your style?Yesterday’s article emphasized the importance

of good partnership and how learning that skill can increase your enjoyment of the game and improve your results.

There’s another aspect of partnership you must tend to. It is vitally important that you discuss your agreements and general “style” in the bidding.

Do you have a tendency to open light (fewer than 12 high-card points) just to get in the first lick? Would you consider opening a weak 2♦ on ♦Q 10 7 6 5 4? Do you often overcall four-card suits? If you answered yes to these questions, your style is decidedly aggressive.

If you prefer a more solid foundation – solid openers, disciplined preempts and overcalls – you will lose out on some auctions, but you will be more comfortable doubling the opponents when they step out of line because you know partner has the goods for his opening bid or overcall. You will also be more comfortable probing for slam if you know partner’s openers are sound.

The aggressive philosophy can cause problems for the opponents, but it can also expose you to big penalties. When things are going your way, you will have some sensational games. When the tables are turned, you will have some horrible games. Further, if your opening bids and preempts are truly random, your constructive bidding will suffer.

It’s important for you and your partner to settle

this issue so you are on the same page.

Style is not the only matter worth discussing. No doubt you play Stayman, the bid of 2♣ after partner opens 1NT. What if partner bids Stayman over your 1NT opener then bids 3♦ after you respond 2♦? Is that forcing? What if partner transfers to spades after you open 1NT then bids 3♥? What is he showing?

What about your agreements for coping with an opponent’s 1NT opening? What if 1NT shows 13-15 or 11-14? Do you play a different system over “weak” 1NT openings? What qualifies as a “weak” 1NT to your partnership? What if partner bids over a 1NT opening and you have a good hand? Do you have a way of showing your strength? Some pairs agree that when partner enters the auction against a 1NT opening, advancer (partner of the overcaller) bids 2NT to show the good hand.

What about Blackwood? There is “plain” Blackwood and Roman Key Card Blackwood: 5♣ shows 0 or 3 key cards (the aces and the trump king), 5♦ 1 or 4, 5♥ 2 without the queen of trumps and 5♠ 2 with the trump queen. Some partnerships reverse the meanings of 5♣ and 5♦ in the so-called 1430 version of RKCB.

Have you discussed continuations in the auction? Does 5NT (asking about kings) guarantee all the key cards and the trump queen? It should. Some respond to 5NT by showing the number of kings outside the trump suit. Others bid their kings up the line, 6♣ showing the ♣K but not denying higher-ranking kings. If a king is skipped, responder doesn’t have it. For example, if the trump suit is spades and responder bids 6♦, the bid denies holding the ♣K

and but does not deny the ♥K.If you have a regular partner, I suggest that the

two of you sit down with the ACBL convention card and go over each of the conventions you plan to play and discuss, as best you can, continuations and what they mean – especially which are forcing and which are not. It will take time to do this, but it’s worth it to avoid “accidents” that result from not having firm agreements.

Using the bidding as a guide to play and defense

By Eddie Kantar Dlr: East ♠ 8 6 Vul: N-S ♥ K 10 3 2 ♦ 7 6 5 ♣ A K 6 5 ♠ K 10 7 5 4 ♠ J 3 2 ♥ 6 4 ♥ 8 5 ♦ 8 2 ♦ A K J 10 9 ♣ 10 9 8 3 ♣ J 4 2 ♠ A Q 9 ♥ A Q J 9 7 ♦ Q 4 3 ♣ Q 7 West North East South 2♦(1) 2NT Pass 3♣ Pass 3♥ Pass 4♥ All Pass

(1) Weak.Opening lead: ♦8Bidding Commentary: East decided to

mention his powerful suit before it got lost in the shuffle. Suits headed by 100 honors are allowed a

certain leeway, particularly when not vulnerable.

Defensive Commentary: As East, win the first two tricks with the ♦K A and return the ♦9, your lowest diamond, asking for a club rather than a spade return, the lesser of evils. If West watches the spot cards closely, he will know that the 9 is partner’s lowest diamond and shift to the ♣10 after ruffing the diamond return. Play Commentary: East, who has opened a weak two-bid in diamonds, has turned up with 8 HCP in diamonds plus the presumed ♣J from West’s return of the ♣10. If he had the ♠K as well, East would have opened the bidding at the one level. So, as South, what are you going to do about it? Why not cash all of your hearts, reducing to a club and three spades, dummy keeping three clubs and one spade? If West started with four or more clubs and the ♠K, the last heart will squeeze him to a pulp. He will be forced to blank his ♠K to hold three clubs, and you will pick

it off. Or you can cash the ♠A before the last trump and watch West squirm.

Look, you don’t have to know anything about squeezes to find this play. You know that ♠K is on your left, so your only shot is to run your winners and hope that West is guarding spades and clubs. Do it!

Dot and Larry Boulia (center) of Sarasota FL completed their club director training earlier in the week. They immediately started applying their knowledge by interning with seasoned Intermediate-Newcomer directors Priscilla Smith and Judy Cotterman.

ABTA announces 2015 book award winners

By Pat HarringtonIn 1982, the American Bridge Teachers’

Association began recognizing outstanding works with its annual book awards. After her death, the book award was named to honor Shirley Silverman, a dedicated ABTA member and author of an early five-card major teaching series. A software category award was added when computers became popular.

The 2015 ABTA Shirley Silverman Book of the Year award went to “Larry Teaches Opening Leads,” Larry Cohen’s book for novice to intermediate players.

David Bird’s “Winning Duplicate Tactics” was the winning book in the intermediate to advanced category.

Outstanding books that don’t meet the book award criteria for providing teaching material for students or teachers are eligible for special recognition. The 2015 committee voted to honor Julian Laderman’s historical work, “Bumblepuppy Days — the Evolution from Whist to Bridge.”

The 2015 committee members were Jerry Helms, Brenda Montague, Jeff Schuett, Karen Walker and Pat Harrington (chair).

Book or software authors and publishers wishing to submit new works for consideration for the 2016 awards should email Harrington at [email protected].

Circus ultimately won the match by 5,470 points, but Sharif still incurred a net loss after paying all related expenses.

The Circus, under the management of Mike Ledeen, caravanned through Canada and the U.S. in 1970-71. Sharif’s team joined with the Dallas Aces for a seven-city tour: Chicago, Winnipeg, Los Angeles, St. Paul--Minneapolis, Dallas, Detroit and Philadelphia. In each city, a team of local experts participated in the exhibition.

In 1975, sponsored by the Lancia division of Fiat, Sharif and members of the Italian Blue Team faced off in four challenge matches against American teams. Sharif’s team won in Chicago, but was defeated in New York, Los Angeles and Miami.

The Omar Sharif World Individual, held in 1990, offered the largest total purse ($200,000) in the history of bridge.

Sharif authored “Ma Vie au Bridge,” and co-authored a syndicated bridge column for decades, first with Charles Goren and later, Tannah Hirsch. He was also the hand analyst for the Epson worldwide bridge contests.

Entry feesPlayers must be ACBL members whose service

fees or dues are current in order to compete in any of the following national-ranked events: Grand National Teams (Championship Flight), von Zedtwitz Life Master Pairs*, Spingold Knockout Teams, Wagar Women’s Knockout Teams, Truscott/USPC Senior Swiss Teams, Wernher Open Pairs, Freeman Mixed Board-A-Match Teams and the Roth Open Swiss Teams. The entry fees for these contests are $20 per player per session.

Note: Only ACBL members are eligible to play in NABC+ events. $1.50 per person per session benefits the International Fund.

Players must also be current ACBL members to play in the Grand National Teams (Flights A, B and C), the 0-5000 and 0-1500 Mini-Spingold Knockouts, the 0-10,000 NABC Pairs, the 0-10,000 Mixed Swiss Teams, the Bruce LM-5000 Pairs* and the Young LM-1500 Pairs* and the Bean Red Ribbon Pairs. The entry fee is $17 per player per session.

Regional championships are $16 per player per session for ACBL members, and $18 for non-members. All other events are $15 per player per session for ACBL members, $17 for non-members.

Bot power!The 19th World Computer-Bridge Championship

will take place August 10–15 in conjunction with the Chicago NABC. Eight of the top bridge-playing robots from around the world will compete in the six-day event. Entrants come from Denmark, France (2), Germany, Japan, Netherlands (2) and the U.S.

The format consists of a 32-board round-robin, with the top four robots advancing to the knockout stage. Each team consists of four identical robots.

The robot championship was established by the ACBL in 1996. The World Bridge Federation signed on as a co-sponsor in 1999. The contest is held annually at a major bridge event – either an NABC or a WBF World Championships.

The computer-bridge championship is coordinated by Al Levy, who serves on the ACBL Board of Directors and the WBF Executive Council. Levy also maintains the official website at www.computerbridge.com. There you will find the 19-year history of the event as well as articles, results and play records.

Spectators are welcome to drop by the Marquette Room on the 3rd floor.

New approach by Appeals Committees

In meetings prior to the start of the Chicago NABC, the Board of Directors amended the ACBL Handbook for Appeals Committees.

Effective immediately, Appeals Committees will use the Tournament Director’s ruling as their foundation rather than starting their ruling from scratch. In this scenario, appellants will be asked to explain the grounds on which they believe the TD’s ruling ought to be overturned.

Most often, this will have little or no effect on the outcome of the case. When the Appeals Committee decides that the TD’s ruling was misjudged or simply incorrect, the ruling will be overturned. In close cases, however, where the TD ruling is reasonable and the decision could go either way, the committee will be more likely to rule with the TD than in the past.

The grounds for bringing an appeal have not changed. If you believe the TD was mistaken as to the facts of the case, or the TD has applied the law incorrectly or was mistaken on a matter of bridge judgment, you can and should appeal.

Kudos, too, to John Krah of Seattle WA, who earned his gold card playing in Flight C of the Grand National Teams. The match awards paid more than the 2 red points he needed to go over. John, partner Daniel Poore, and teammates Alice Kaye and Kevin Contzen represented District 19 (Pacific Northwest).

Smoking PolicySmoking is not permitted in the playing area

during any bridge playing event at an NBAC. This includes electronic smoking devices.

MonitoringAt this and future North American

Championships, ACBL will be monitoring NABC+ events with visible, real-time cameras. The images will be recorded and available for later inspection and review by officials.

By general monitoring of the session and participants’ behavior, ACBL has another source of information that may be useful in determining facts and settling issues arising from some types of ethical and behavioral complaints or actions. Please summon a director if a problem occurs at the table.

This procedure is intended to assure everyone that the playing field is level and that misbehavior will not be tolerated.

Palmer House shuttleThe ACBL has arranged for a shuttle bus to run

between the Palmer House (Wabash) and the Hilton (8th Street) approximately every 20 minutes.

New Electronic Device Policy

The ACBL Board of Directors has revised the Electronic Device Policy at its meetings this week. The new policy goes into effect immediately.

1.11.1 The electronic device policy at NABCs allows players to bring electronic devices into the playing area. Except for health-related equipment and/or by permission of the Director-in-Charge of the tournament, all such devices must be inoperable and turned off.

1.11.2 Any device capable of either sending or receiving electronic signals must not be visible during the session.

1.11.3 This policy applies to all pairs, team members, captains, coaches, play recorders and kibitzers with the exception of those persons designated by the ACBL. This policy is in force throughout any actual playing session or segment of play.

1.11.4 A violation of the policy will result in an automatic penalty pursuant to Law 91 of the Laws of Duplicate Bridge of one full board at matchpoints/board-a-match scoring, 12 IMPs at IMP pairs/knockouts or 20% maximum of VPs available per match in a Swiss team event for the first offense. A second offense will result in disqualification from the event for the pair/team. Kibitzers violating this policy will be required to leave the playing area for the remainder of that session.New age requirement for

Senior eventsThe definition of a Senior (for the purpose of

Senior events, tournaments, special games, etc.) has matured — from 55 to 60 years old. If you were born before January 1, 1959, you qualify to play in ACBL Senior events.

Notice to playersEach player must have an ACBL convention

card filled out and on the table. Please note that other types of convention cards, such as the WBF convention card or homemade cards that do not sufficiently resemble the ACBL convention card, are not acceptable substitutes.

Entries (per session)North American championships with no upper masterpoint limit = $20(Note: Only ACBL members are eligible to play in NABC+ events. $1.50 per person per session benefits

the International Fund.)Screen surcharge, NABC+ events only when screens are in use = $20 per team ($10 per pair)Other North American Championships = $17(Note: Only ACBL members are eligible to play in these events.)Regional championships = $16 for ACBL members, $20 for

all othersAll other events = $15 for ACBL members, $19 for

all others

Be scent-sitive!Some people have an extreme sensitivity to

fragrances (colognes or perfumes). Many ACBL clubs, units and districts have adopted policies that prohibit players from wearing fragrances. The

ACBL has not issued an official policy on the matter, preferring instead to appeal to the goodwill of its members to refrain from using fragrances.

Because duplicate bridge requires players to be in close proximity to each other, individuals who suffer from fragrance-related reactions cannot avoid those who are wearing them. Among the commonly reported symptoms are intense headaches (indeed, fragrances can frequently be a trigger for migraine sufferers) or breathing-related problems. For these individuals, the issue is much more serious than simply disliking a particular smell — it’s a real health problem.

The ACBL asks everyone to give this issue the consideration it deserves. Please, if you’re going to play in a club or a tournament, don’t wear cologne, perfume or scented lotions.

Convention card reminderEach player is required to have a convention

card filled out legibly and on the table throughout a session. The convention card must include the first and last name of each member of the partnership, and the cards must be identical.

If a director determines that neither player has a substantially completed card, the partnership may play only the Standard American Yellow Card and may use only standard carding. This restriction may be lifted only at the beginning of a subsequent round after convention cards have been properly prepared and approved by the director. Further, the partnership will receive a 1/6-board matchpoint penalty for each board played, commencing with the next round and continuing until the restriction is lifted. In IMP team games, penalties shall be at the discretion of the director.

If the director determines the partnership has at least one substantially completed convention card but has not fully complied with ACBL regulations, the director may give warnings or assign such penalties as he deems to be appropriate under the circumstances.

The objective of these warnings and penalties is the encouragement of full compliance with ACBL regulations.

Slow PlaySlow play, especially habitual slow play, is a

violation of law and subject to penalty. When a pair has fallen behind, it is incumbent on them to make up the time lost as quickly as possible whether at fault or not. All players are expected to make a concerted effort to catch up when they have fallen behind, regardless of the reason for their lateness.

In the absence of compelling evidence to the contrary, the director should presume that a pair finishing a round late by more than two or three minutes on more than one occasion during a session is responsible for the lateness. There is a strong expectation that the director will penalize such a pair. The size of a penalty will tend to increase for subsequent instances of slow play and for chronic or egregious slow play.

While warnings typically will be given before a penalty is assessed, failure to do so in no way limits the director’s authority to issue a penalty.

Players are expected to be aware, in a general sense, of time used and remaining in a segment in which they are playing regardless of whether a clock is in use or a time announcement has been made. An excuse of “no announcement” or “no clock immediately visible” will not be considered persuasive.
