A MESSAGE FROM FR. STEVE

Hearts Filled with Joy

On this Gaudete Sunday, my heart is filled with joy for God’s goodness to us this year. Thank you for your prayerful support of our ministry, and your commitment to spiritual growth, spreading the Gospel, and ministering to those in need. It is a beautiful thing to see the generous outpouring of time, talent, and treasure parishioners have shown, and the openness to the Lord’s leading among the faithful of the parish. The Lord has blessed us richly, and I hope and pray that we will continue to grow in our ability to worship God well, grow in holiness, and serve others in love, especially the “least of these” as we enjoy the new year in our Lord’s favor.

Come Encounter Jesus

This evening (Saturday, December 14th), we will have our next Healing Encounter. It is a time of praise, worship, prayer, and adoration from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the church. It’s a great opportunity to worship God and to open our hearts to have Him do healing work in us. Come, and bring others with you. Prayer teams will be available to pray for healing and other requests. Come, and invite someone to join you.

Communal Penance Service/Confessions

This Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Gerard, there will be two Advent Community Communal Penance Services. If this afternoon is not a good time for you, consider making a good confession during one of the opportunities we have regularly here at the Church of the Resurrection for the sacrament of reconciliation. See the bulletin for confession times. St. Nicholas Back Sale Please bring your relatives, friends, and neighbors to the St. Nicholas Bake Sale which will run Saturday, December 14 from 9 am to 7pm, and Sunday, December 15 from 10am to 2pm, in Mercy Hall. Friends and parishioners of Church of the Resurrection bring in homemade goodies of all kinds, cookies, pies, candies, and others for this weekend event! The proceeds from our bake sale are divided between our parish and school. I'm grateful for this tradition and for the support it brings. Hope to see you there!

Lumen Veritatis December 21 Our next Lumen Veritatis lecture will be held next Saturday (December 21) at 7:30 in Mercy Hall (127 Rumsey). The evening begins with fellowship at 7:00 p.m., followed by a talk, questions & answers, and more fellowship. This month, the Lumen Veritatis lecture will be given by Mr. Jim Owens. His first Lumen, December 2017, addressed neuroplasticity of the brain. If you haven’t seen it, I very much recommend watching/listening to the lecture on the Lumen website. This month, Mr. Owens’ lecture will be “The Psychology of Healing: Setting the Soul Free.” Drawing upon the wisdom of ancient philosophy and theology as well as decades of classroom and clinical experience, Jim will consider the psychological, physiological and spiritual elements of healing. Join us if you’re able!

Basic Human Needs Last weekend, in my Sunday homilies, I mentioned a day-long seminar that other priests and I attended, which was presented by the John Paul II Healing Center. It was called, “Holy Desire: The Path to Freedom.” In her talk, Sr. Miriam mentioned that all our desires (seen in the light of truth and at their essence/root/base) are “of the Father,” and are therefore good. It’s a liberating statement, and can free all of us who struggle with “dark desires.” There is no doubt that good desires can easily be twisted by the world, the flesh, and the devil.

But remember: all your desires, and mine, stem ultimately from good desires. Sr. Miriam spent some time talking about basic human needs that we all possess. Clearly, not all of our “basic human needs” are being met, but we strive to meet those needs, however we can. Sadly, we often seek to satisfy our basic needs in compulsive ways and/or seek to self-medicate the pain of not having our needs met. The Lord, of course, is the fulfillment of all desire, and He always invites us to bring our needs to him. But God made us to need not just Him but others in Him. It is vital for all of us to live in ways that others can love us with God’s love, and whom we can in turn love with God’s love. All of us have basic human needs . . .

• to be loved unconditionally

• to have secure attachments (to be safe physically and emotionally)

• to belong and be accepted (to be “chosen”)

• to find meaning and purpose in life

• to develop intimate relationships (to be seen and to be known)

As pastor, I want to find ways for us to more effectively help each of us and those we love meet their basic human needs in healthy, holy ways, surrounded by others who are parts of the Family of God and the Body of Christ. Please pray for me and the leadership of the parish and school, as we seek to discern how to grow in our ability to love well God and our neighbors.

Living as People of Hope

In my homily last week, I talked about hope, and the power of living as people of hope. St. Paul gives us some excellent guidelines of what it would mean to live that way: Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with brotherly affection; outdo one another in showing honor. Never flag in zeal, be aglow with the Spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in your hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints, practice hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; never be conceited. Repay no one evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends upon you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God; for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” No, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals upon his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. (Romans 12:9-21)

Rejoicing in hope with you,

Father Steve

Hello Parishioners,

First and foremost, thank you for keeping the school in your prayers. We are truly indebted to you for all the ways you support our ministry. I am proud to give an update on this year's School Auction. With your help, we raised over $37,000 for the school. This is the most successful auction to date, and we could not have done it without you! Most of the funds will be used to provide tuition assistance to families in need, but some of the funds are targeted for classroom requests from the teachers. We are so grateful for the constant support we receive from our parishioners. We are so blessed to have parishioners who are committed to helping our school, so we can in turn support our families in forming Disciples of Christ. This has been our goal since the parish started under Monsignor Gabriels' leadership, and it has been through the prayers and support of our parishioners which has helped us to keep this ministry alive throughout the years. And now, through Fr. Steve’s leadership, our school is growing beyond all hopes and dreams. The children are blessed to be surrounded by this community, this family of faith. Thank you again for the many ways you support the school and the parish. May God bless your Advent preparations, as together we anticipate Christ’s return in glory.

Pax Christi,

Jacob Allstott
