On Thursday the 23rd

of March 2017 teachers, students and parents enjoyed the PYP Community Night. The night was a great success, as students shared their knowledge and understanding of the Primary Years Programme. Students demonstrated this through various presentations and were effective communicators, risk-takers and thinkers. As part of the evening, each year level presented an Essential Element of the PYP.

Learner Profiles The Preps shared their knowledge about the Learner Profile through singing different songs and also sharing some pieces of work from their portfolio.

Attitudes The Year 1 children presented powerpoints, videos, songs and presentations of work to share their understanding of the PYP Attitudes.

Artefacts & International Mindedness In Year 2, the students shared Artefacts and their knowledge on International Mindedness through their cultural backgrounds. They sang a song titled ‘Children of the World’ and presented their work from their values inquiry.

Transdisciplinary Themes Students in Year 3 presented their understanding of the Transdisplinary Themes (Who we are, Where we are in place and time, How we express ourselves, How the world works, How we organise ourselves, Sharing the planet) through powerpoints, posters and visual displays.

Key Concepts Year 4 students were reflective about their understanding of the Key Concepts through powerpoints, posters and sharing of work.

Transdisciplinary Skills Students in Year 5 showed their knowledge of the Transdisciplinary Skills (Thinking, Social, Communication, Self-management, Research) through mindmaps (where they linked their understanding and work with each skill) and classroom displays.

Leadership Year 6 students shared their Leadership journey through presentations by each Leadership Group. The Performing Arts specialist teacher also had the performing arts room opened for a dancing competition, where students had the opportunity to dance the evening away. The Visual Arts specialist teacher had the Art room opened for an art gallery viewing. There were also some sport games on the oval with Mr Ganley and Mr Trott. The Italian specialist teachers Signora Savoia, Thompson and Pirovano worked with the grade 4s to present their Venetian Masks, which was linked to their classroom inquiry. Our much-loved BBQ and water station were popular, thanks to all staff that helped and supported this. Thank you to the delightful parents who came along to support your children. It is great to see so many people from the community attend the PYP night. Thanks to all of our dedicated and committed staff members who made the night a success. It was a lovely evening! We are excited to have planted our first batch of vegies in our class garden. Students learnt how to separate individual cloves from a head of garlic, and how to work out which end points up and which points down when we plant them. We will water and take care of them until they are ready later in the year for us to harvest and use to make delicious garlic bread.

Our class is delighted to say that our garlic is already growing!

Catherine: I liked when me and Piper took the photos when we were planting our garlic. Nadya: I think the garlic will turn out nicely because it is growing very fast. Yarik: I feel happy and excited and hungry for our garlic bread! Amalia: My family really loves garlic bread so it will be exciting for us.

Our Vegetable Garden

Lochlan: I liked planting the garlic because I like getting dirty! Zach: I get to water it a lot and I look forward to making the garlic bread. Holly: I liked planting the garlic because I learnt the pointy end goes to the top and the flat bit goes to the bottom when we plant it. Savannah: I liked it because I love planting all sorts of fruit and vegetables. Hannah L: I’m excited to see the garlic grow and I like watering it. Piper: I think our garlic will grow really nicely. I’m excited to see it grow. Rohan: I felt happy because Ellis (my brother) was there to plant with us. Hannah G: I think the garlic will grow fast and taste yummy in our garlic bread.

Last week at the PYP Community Evening the grade 3 students presented their understanding of the Transdisciplinary Themes. All the students and teachers worked very hard to be sure our presentations were interesting and full of information. In grade 3SP we worked in groups to create posters that showed our understanding. We brought in artefacts that showed our connection with the theme of each group. After the Community night we reflected on the experience using De Bono’s Thinking Hats. Red Hat (feelings) After the presentation my feeling is happy because Mum and Dad are proud of me. (Yehyun) Red Hat (feelings) I felt so nervous that I was shaking but I was excited as well. I was worried that I would mess up and not be as good as I wanted. (Zach) Green Hat (Creativity) The tables were nearly in a circle but not. Also I tried my best on the poster. My team and I did a lot of drawings. (Saoirse)

White Hat (Facts) I had a lot of facts in my brain when parents came to look at the posters. I could answer questions easily for the parents. (Nikola) White Hat (Facts) PYP night was at 6:30pm in our class, there were 6 stations. I had four people in my group: Ryan, Lavisha, Vincent and me. (Jack) Blue Hat (Processes) We were planning what to do and what not to do. We had to know what would happen if someone was away. We had to be able to talk about the posters and the process. Then we waited for the night and explained to parents what we were doing. (Joshua) Yellow Hat (Positive Points) Everyone liked how I spoke loudly and how I answered peoples questions. (Max) Black Hat (Possible Problems) I thought that it might not work because I did not know Izayan’s lines that well. I thought it would go wrong. (Anabel)

As a way of exploring our values and beliefs we created our own personal identity trees. As you can see in the photos each of our trees are different. This symbolises that no one person is the same and that our values and beliefs can be different to others.

There are two different coloured leaves, one represents a value and the other a belief. The roots at the bottom represent the people in our life who influence our values and beliefs. Here are some of the students’ core values and beliefs.

Somers Camp

Somers Camp was an amazing experience that I know I will never forget. I have made so many new friends and I was so nervous when I first arrived. When I got used to the camp and all the people I felt like I was at home, especially when I met my hut leader Bec for the first time. She was super nice and made us go to bed very early so for the next day we had a lot of energy and we weren't sleepy. The activ-ities were so fun! My favourite was surfing and the weather was really nice. – Lejla 6JB Somers Camp was amazing! I made friends straight away! The best activity was the challenge swing. I went to the top and I was very proud of myself. On the last day I got to choose which activity I wanted to do again. And yes, I chose the challenge swing to take to the top again! – Billy 6JB When you first arrive at Somers you get a nice warm welcome. At first I was scared that I wasn't going to meet a lot of people, and that I was living with strangers for 9 days. But that all changes after you meet your hut teacher and everyone in your cabin. All the activities are very social and enjoyable. The staff were really nice and friendly. – Katia 6JB

Message from Mr Basa A few weeks ago Mr Brown, Ms Payne and I were given an unforgettable opportunity to go to Somers Camp as visiting teachers for 9 days. As well as 3 teachers from Seabrook Primary School, 19 lucky Seabrook students were also given an opportunity to go. Somers Camp was an incredible experience. It was great to see so many students who were strangers at the beginning of the camp, become life-long friends by the end of it. Surfing, rock-climbing, abseiling and archery were just a few activities I was able to enjoy with my group, a group that included students from many different schools. Definitely a camp I will never forget.

Also if you have paid by the QKR option, you still need to return your permission notes ( including the medical/swimming level part) to school. The program starts on Monday 24th of April. There are spare notes at your child’s class or on the skoolbag alerts section.

The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open and Seabrook Primary School is excited to be participating.

The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by 8 September 2017.

Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books.

All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and can choose to have their name included on the online Honour Roll. If you would like your child‘s name to appear on the Honour Roll, please sign the attached form and return it to your school.

To read the Premier’s letter to parents, view the booklists and for more information about the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge, visit: www.education.vic.gov.au/prc
