WOMEN’S TENNIS ASSOCIATIONMATCH NOTES

THE FINALISTS This year’s US Open women’s singles final features a clash between a legend of the game and a flavor of the future as 23-time Grand Slam singles champion [8] Serena Williams takes on first-time major finalist [15] Bianca Andreescu.

Andreescu, having never been further than the second round at a Grand Slam, will be looking to win her maiden major title in her first ever title match appearance similar to the likes of what Ashleigh Barty (Roland Garros) and Naomi Osaka (US Open) have done in the 12 months.

The 19-year-old is the first Canadian to advance to the final of a Slam since Eugenie Bouchard (2014 Wimble-don, lost in final) and is just the second Canadian ever (Bouchard) to reach a major title match.

Since returning from giving birth, Serena has gotten tantilizingly close to tasting victory again at the highest level of the sport, having reached the finals of Wimbledon (2018-19) and last year’s US Open. A win today would tie her with the all-time major singles title mark of 24, held by Margaret Court.

Serena will be No.9 with a runner-up finish or No.6 with her record-tying 24th Grand Slam title. While Andree-scu will make her Top 10 debut at No.9 as runner-up and No.5 with the trophy - No.5 would equal the highest ranking by a Canadian woman (Bouchard - October 20, 2014). In the Porsche Race to Shenzhen, the winner moves up to No.4 and the runner-up will be No.5 on the leaderboard.

GAME HAS NO AGE This year’s US Open final is proof that is doesn’t matter how old or how young you are. If you have the game then greatness will follow...

With Serena Williams (37y, 346d) & Bianca Andreescu (19y, 83d) facing off in the final, this marks the largest age gap - 18y, 263d - between major finalists in the Open Era:

SLAMMIN’ SUCCESS Since 1968 Roland Garros, 50 women have won at least one Grand Slam title (29 have gone on to win more).

Of these 50, 11 first-time champions have come at the US Open, with three first-time winners coming from the three of the last four years (2018 – Osaka, 2017 – Ste-phens, and 2015 – Pennetta).

The last 10 Grand Slams have produced six first-time winners: (2019 Roland Garros – Barty, 2018 US Open – Osaka, 2018 Roland Garros – Halep, 2018 Australian Open – Wozniacki, 2017 US Open – Stephens, 2017 Roland Garros – Ostapenko).

SPREADING THE LOVE Through the first three Slams of 2019, there have been three different champions: Naomi Osaka (Australian Open), Ashleigh Barty (Roland Garros) and Simona Halep (Wimbledon). With all three eliminated from the 2019 US Open this means there will be four different Grand Slam champions in the same season for the third year in a row.

This is only the fifth time in the Open Era that there have been four different Slam winners in a season in consecutive years - also 1977-78, 1998-99, 2004-05 and 2017-18.

WOMEN’S TENNIS ASSOCIATIONMATCH NOTES

EARLY BLOOMER Having advanced to the US Open final, Bianca Andrees-now joins an elite list of just 6 women to have reached a Grand Slam final in four major appearances or less.

The all-time record for the fewest Grand Slam main draw appearances before reaching a Slam final in the Open Era is two - Pam Shriver was runner-up at 1978 US Open, having only contested Wimbledon two months prior.

Serena Williams (1999 US Open) and Maria Sharapova (2004 Wimbledon) captured their first major titles in their seventh main draw appearance.

When Jelena Ostapenko hoisted the 2017 Roland Gar-ros title, she was making just her eighth Grand Slam main draw appearance.

Should Andreescu win the title, it would equal the fastest a player has won a Grand Slam - Monica Seles was the fastest to win her first major title in the Open Era at 1990 Roland Garros in just her fourth Grand Slam main draw.

With Serena Williams’ semifinal win over Elina Svitolina, she achieved her 101st career victory at the US Open - a personal best win total record for her across the Slams, bettering her success at Wimbledon (98):

She is now tied with Chris Evert (101) for the all-time US Open wins record:

CHASING HISTORY

LEAGUE OF HER OWN Serena Williams has made at least one Grand Slam final in 19 of the last 21 seasons (no final in 2000, 2006).

She has reached at least one Grand Slam every year since 2007 – 13 consecutive years.

This is the ninth time in a 13-year stretch that Serena has reached two or more Grand Slam finals.

Serena is the only player in 2019 to reach two major finals.

The American is going for her seventh US Open title to break the tie with Chris Evert to hold the most US Open titles in the Open Era.

She would equal her title haul from the Australian Open (Open Era leader) and Wimbledon (tied with Stephanie Graf).

Only Martina Navratilova has won more titles at a single Slam in the Open Era with nine at Wimbledon. All-time at the US Open, only Molla Bjurstedt Mallory (9) and Hellen Wills Moody (8) have won more championships.

A DASHING DEBUT Bianca Andreescu is making her US Open main draw debut this fortnight and has won six matches in a row to advance to her first career Grand Slam final.

This is the best performance by a debutant at the US Open since Venus Williams advanced to the final in her first Flushing Meadows campaign in 1997 (I. Hingis).

WOMEN’S TENNIS ASSOCIATIONMATCH NOTES

TEENAGE KICKS At 19-years of age, Bianca Andreescu is now the sec-ond teenager this year to advance to a Grand Slam final after Marketa Vondrousova did so at Roland Garros (l. Barty in F).

This is the first time since 2007 that more than one teen-ager has reached a Grand Slam final in the same season - Ana Ivanovic (Roland Garros) and Maria Sharapova (Australian Open)

Prior to Vondrousova, the last teen Slam finalist was Caroline Wozniacki, who finished runner-up to Kim Clijsters at the 2009 US Open.

A teenager has won a Grand Slam singles title 33 times (12 different players) in the Open Era. The last teenager to win a Grand Slam title was Maria Sharapova (19 yrs, 132 days) at the 2006 US Open.

KIDS THESE DAYS Following her second round victory over 17-year-oldAmerican Caty McNally, Serena Williams bolstered her career stats when facing off against the teenage contingent of the WTA Tour...

Owns a 118-18 career mark vs. teens - last loss was to today’s opponent, 19-year-old Bianca Andreescu at Toronto (via ret.), previous loss was 2015 Toronto to Belinda Bencic.

Holds a 56-3 career record vs. teens at Grand Slams - losses to Venus Williams (1998 Australian Open R64), Maria Sharapova (2004 Wimbledon Final) and Sloane Stephens (2013 Australian Open QF).

- Has never lost to a teen at the US Open

The American is 31-7 vs. teens aged 17 and below, including 16-2 at Slams. Has gone three sets 37 times vs. teens, including 12 times at Grand Slams.

Having won over Serena in the 2019 Toronto final, Andreescu would become just the second teenager ever to defeat Serena in back-to-back finals (Sharapova). Serena holds an 8-7 mark vs. teens in finals:

WOMEN’S TENNIS ASSOCIATIONMATCH NOTES

September 7, 1953 - 18-year-old Maureen Connol-ly won her third straight US women’s singles title and became the first woman to complete a Grand Slam when she defeated Doris Hart 6-2, 6-4 in the women’s singles final.

September 7, 1985 - Hana Mandlikova won her only US Open singles crown defeating Martina Navratilova in the final 7-6(3), 1-6, 7-6(2). The 23-year-old Czech became the first non-American woman to win the US singles title since Margaret Court of Australia in 1970.

September 7, 1991 - 17-year-old Monica Seles defeated 34-year-old Martina Navratilova to win her first US Open women’s singles title and complete the season winning all three major tournaments she entered.

September 7, 1997 - The first two US Open singles titles are played on the new Arthur Ashe Stadium Court as 16-year-old Martina Hingis and 17-year-old Venus Williams played the youngest major tournament final in the Open Era and Hingis won her first US Open title by a 6-0, 6-4 margin.

September 7, 2002 - For the second consecutive year, sisters Venus and Serena Williams met in a prime time US Open women’s singles final. However, unlike 2001, younger sister Serena turned the tables on her older sis-ter, defeating the two-time defending champion 6-4, 6-3 to win her second US Open women’s singles title.

ON THIS DAY...

BIG STAGE PLAYERS This season’s Grand Slam season has seen a strong consistency amongst players returning to the latter stages of majors.

THERE’S A TREND Bianca Andreescu won her maiden title at this year’s Indian Wells. At times, Indian Wells has been a good predictor of the women’s US Open Champion...

Six players have won the Indian Wells title and went on to capture the US Open later that year, most recently Naomi Osaka last year:

2018 Naomi Osaka 2006 Maria Sharapova 2005 Kim Clijsters 1999 Serena Williams 1996 Steffi Graf 1992 Monica Seles

Additionally, Serena Williams has lost in the US Open final on three occasions including 2018 against Naomi Osaka (also 2001, 2011) - each previous time she lost in the final she would then go on to win the title the following year (2002, 2012)

CLASS IN SESSION Since Serena Williams won her first Grand Slam title (1999 US Open), 58 different players have made their Top 10 debut.

In contrast, 131 players total have reached the Top 10 in WTA rankings history.
