WOMEN’S TENNIS ASSOCIATIONMATCH NOTES

Angelique Kerber is projected to move to No.4 by reach-ing the final, and will climb as high as No.2 if she wins the title.

Bianca Andreescu, who finished the 2018 season ranked No.178 and made her Top 100 debut just over a month ago, is projected break into the Top 50 at No.33, making her the highest-ranked teenager on tour. Should she lift the title then she will end the fortnight at No.24.

RANKINGS UPDATE OUT OF LEFTFIELDKerber is the first left-handed woman to reach the Indian Wells final since Monica Seles was crowned champion in 1992.

For all her career accomplishments, Kerber had never appeared in a WTA Premier Mandatory final prior to this fortnight. The closest the German had come were semi-final runs at Miami in 2016 and Indian Wells in 2012 and 2013.

Both finalists have posted impressive numbers in their return games this fortnight.

Kerber, in particular, has enjoyed a marked upturn in fortune in this aspect of her game, breaking serve 29 times from 53 games (54.7%). By contrast, entering the tournament, she had won just 36.4% of her return games in 2019.

Eager not to be outdone, Andreescu has won 52.4% of her return games en route to the final, up on her pre-tour-nament number of 41.5%.

AGE IS JUST A NUMBER Andreescu will be 18 years and 274 days old at the end of the tournament, making her the youngest woman to reach the final since a 17-year-old Kim Clijsters finished runner-up in 2001.
