8 9 JANUARY 2014 JANUARY 2014 Celebrate Australia Day 2014 AUSTRALIA DAY CONCERT AND FIREWORKS SUNDAY 26 JANUARY 2014, 6PM-10PM WHITEHORSE CIVIC CENTRE LAWNS AND SOUNDSHELL STAGE, 379-397 WHITEHORSE ROAD, NUNAWADING AUSTRALIA DAY CIVIC AWARDS W hitehorse’s most outstanding citizens will be honoured at the Australia Day Civic Awards on Sunday 26 January 2014 at a special ceremony prior to the Whitehorse Australia Day Concert and Fireworks. The Mayor Cr Sharon Ellis will announce Whitehorse’s 2014 Citizen of the Year and Young Citizen of the Year at a special ceremony to be held from 4.30pm in the Whitehorse Centre, rear of 397 Whitehorse Road, Nunawading. In addition, a number of Community Achievement Awards will be given to individuals or organisations that have made a significant contribution to the Whitehorse community. A local sporting group will be presented with the Australia Day Trophy in recognition of the recreational activities they provide to community members. The awards provide a great opportunity to thank specific people for their enormous contributions. Winners of the 2014 Australia Day Civic Awards will be featured in the February edition of the Whitehorse News. This year two additional screens have been set up to make sure that everyone sees the action on stage. The on-stage entertainment begins at 6pm with children’s entertainers the Mighty bUZZniks and their smart and edgy music for kids who like to rock. The first-ever Australia’s Got Talent winner Bonnie Anderson is now all grown up and will be performing a range of songs including her newly released debut single ‘Raise The Bar’. X Factor favourite Andrew Wishart will sing pop classics from his album It’s Never Too Late before singer Joe Creighton and his band perform Into the Mystic – a tribute to legendary Irish musician Van Morrison and the heady days of the late 1960s. In Tina Turner’s signature sparkling mini dress and stiletto heels, Rebecca O’Connor will strut her stuff on stage. She will perform iconic hits such as ‘Nutbush City Limits’ and ‘Proud Mary’ – proving that she is ‘Simply the Best’. Those who love to dance will be invited to take part in a group ‘Nutbush’ during Rebecca’s memorable performance. The evening will culminate with an impressive 10-minute fireworks display at 9.50pm. This cemented a style of music that Joe has carried with him through a career that has seen him play with John Farnham, Kylie Minogue and Olivia Newton-John. With Into the Mystic, Joe and the Belfast Horns recreate the feeling of those heady early days. They will take the audience on a journey through the decades, performing Van’s worldwide hits with a sprinkling of his more mystical poetic songs. Rebecca O’Connor as ‘Tina Turner’ Tina Turner fans will be gob-smacked at Rebecca O’Connor’s incredible show. Rebecca grew up in County Cork, Ireland, and was introduced to Tina Turner’s music through her parents. As a teenager she sang a Tina Turner song for the European Stars in Their Eyes competition and took out the title in front of more than 33 million viewers. Rebecca tours with a world-class band of rock musicians and two dancers, performing iconic hits such as ‘Nutbush City Limits’, ‘Proud Mary’, ‘River Deep’ and, of course, her anthem ‘Simply the Best’. IMPORTANT EVENT INFORMATION Walker Park will be closed to the public from 8am on Sunday 26 January. Mitcham Road will be closed on the event day due to the Mitcham Level Crossing works. Council recommends that dogs are not brought to the event as many pets find large crowds, loud noise and fireworks distressing. Dog must remain on the lead at all times. Residents living in the direct vicinity are advised to secure pets safely in their house or yard throughout the fireworks display. FUN, FOOD AND GIVEAWAYS Rides will be operating from 4.30pm to 8.30pm. Food and beverage stalls will operate from 4.30pm to 10pm. Choose from a variety of savoury and sweet dishes as well as coffee and ice-cream.
