It started off okay. In fact, he and a group of friends were partying it up pretty good. Turkey Track had set up an ille- gal saloon, or blind pig, on Morris Carlson’s deserted ranch a short distance from Shields, and among his customers that day were Mr. and Mrs. Guy Bolton and their thirteen-year-old son. According to the Minnewaukan paper, Turk and Bolton got into an argument of some kind. At some point, Bolton left for a while, and when he came back, he found his wife and Turkey Track in a second story room of the shack. The fight began again, and then it seems everybody moved on to Turkey Track’s house, because Bolton wanted more beer. Turk was out, but he had a couple bottles of whiskey at home. The group, including Shorty Long and Bill Smith, gathered down on the banks of the Can- nonball River. Everybody overin- dulged, and pretty soon Turkey Track and Bolton started arguing again. Turk pulled his gun a few times, but Mrs. Bolton always grabbed it and made him to put away. A man named Jacob Jaros hap- pened to come along, about this time, looking for Turkey Track. He noticed people some 80 yards away by the river and was walking down the hill when he saw Bolton stand up. Jaros then heard a shot and saw gun-smoke rise from the grass below. When Mrs. Bolton screamed, Jaros turned around and headed to Shields for help. At the coroner’s inquest, Turkey Track said, “I was up at the house when the shooting happened, and I heard the shot and went back to where the whole bunch had been lying in the grass. Bolton was dy- ing when I got there. No, I didn’t shoot him, and what is more, I don’t know who did. “I had my gun when the bunch was lying around sopping up booze, but it dropped out of my pocket when I went up to the house. I know, because when I heard the shot I felt for the gun, and it was missing. After the shooting we looked all around for the gun, but we couldn’t find it. “Bolton was drunk,” he contin- ued, “about as soused as a man can get, and he was calling down his wife. He usually did bawl her out when he got tanked. I was about seventy-five yards away when the shooting happened, and don’t know who did it. I am not worrying about the result of the case and only hope I get out in time to take in the fair.” Whether Turk got out in time for the fair isn’t known, but we do know Mrs. Bolton’s account of the killing was quite different than his. She said she and Turkey Track were sitting about eight feet apart and that her husband was stand- ing behind her when she heard him say, “My God, don’t shoot.” She heard the shot and was turn- ing toward him when he fell. Mrs. Bolton said she didn’t know if Turkey Track had a gun in his hand or not, but they were both terrified when they realized her husband was dead. They started for the house, weeping, and on the way up the hill, she said Turk put his revolver to his head and said, “Well, I’m done for now. I guess I’ll kill myself.” She grabbed his gun away, saying he’d done enough damage for one day. Turkey Track stood trial for shooting Guy Bolton, but nobody witnessed who fired the gun, and the murder weapon couldn’t be found. Suspecting Turk had thrown his revolver into the Cannonball, Constable Carlson searched the river until he found it. But, it was too late. Turkey Track Bill Molash had already been acquitted by that time. Broadway Wreck by JAYME L. JOB On this date September 1, 2020 — Two Northern Pacific railcars derailed from their tracks in downtown Fargo on this day in 1903. The two cars, one a Wisconsin Central Furniture Car and the other a Pennsylvania Coal Com- pany car, were reduced to wood kindling and scrap metal. The Wisconsin car collided with the Broadway crossing tower and toppled the tower over in sec- onds, also snapping heavy cables attached to a nearby telegraph pole. Conrad Otterstetter, the tower watchman, was forced to escape from the falling tower by climbing through a trap door in the floor and jumping to safety. A friend of his who had brought his evening meal jumped right out of the tower’s window upon sight of the enormous railcar hurdling towards them. A falling brakebeam caused the derailment. The beam is believed to have fallen from a broken at- tachment, knocking the cars from the rail. The Last Straw...Hat by TESSA SANDSTROM On this date September 2, 2020 — The Grand Forks Herald warned today in 1913 that man had better be careful what he wore today to avoid violating an unwritten North Dakota law, and, “making a ‘faux pas’ of the worst kind.” Today marked the first day of the year during which a straw hat should not be worn again until June 1. Though the Herald opposed the short straw hat season, it cau- tioned against donning one today: “Of course you can wear yours if you want to,” wrote the Herald, “just as a man can come home at 3 a.m., or bring a friend home to dinner without phoning his wife, or win a game of kelly pool and then put up his cue. [But] if the wind comes sweeping down the street today and blows your hat off...remember the date and bring forth your plaid cap or low- crowned derby, without trying to defy precedent any longer.” Sioux County by MERRY HELM On this date September 3, 2020 — On this date in 1914, Governor Louis B. Hanna proclaimed the area encompassing the Standing Rock Reservation in ND as Sioux County. He intended to name the new county for its tribal mem- bers, but the word “Sioux” is not a Native American word. Standing Rock tribal members are descend- ed from Teton and Yankton bands of the Lakota/Dakota, which means friend or ally. The U.S. government, however, adopted the Chippewa name for these tribes – Nadowesioux, which means little snake or enemy. French trappers who traded with the Chippewa also used the derog- atory name, eventually shortening it to Sioux. Cream of Wheat a ND Invention by CATHY A. LANGEMO WritePlus Inc. On this date September 4, 2020 — Cream of Wheat, the hot breakfast cereal that many of us grew up on, was originally devel- oped in North Dakota. Cream of Wheat began as breakfast porridge developed by head flour miller Tom Amidon at the Grand Forks Diamond Milling Company in 1893. He fed the product, made from farina (the whitest part of the wheat), to his family. Amidon promoted the idea of the new cereal to Diamond Milling owners George Bull, Emory Mapes and George Clifford Sr. It was Clif- ford’s brother, Fred, who came up with the “Cream of Wheat” name because the product was so white. Diamond Milling was struggling financially after the panic of 1893, and the three men decided to add some of the new cereal to a rail carload of flour being shipped to a New York brokerage firm. The cereal was a hit in New York and the brokers ordered a car load of Cream of Wheat. It was then that the mill own- ers organized the Cream of Wheat Company. The company sold 554 cases of cereal in 1896, increas- ing to over 15,600 cases in 1897. The owners’ business plan was to spend as much on advertising as possible in order to get the cereal into the national market. And the full-color ads in Ladies’ Home Journal and Saturday Evening Post seemed to do the trick. The Cream of Wheat Company outgrew its facilities in Grand Forks by 1897 and moved to Min- neapolis that year. It quickly grew to a 110-person staff and 8,000 stockholders. The company man- agement had been in family hands from the beginning. George Bull died in 1897, and his son, Daniel, led the company from 1919 to 1960, when grandson, Da- vid, became CEO. Cream of Wheat remained a one-product company for 64 years until it was sold to the National Biscuit Company (now Nabisco) in 1961. “Dakota Datebook” is a radio series from Prairie Public in part- nership with the State Historical Society of North Dakota and with funding from the North Dakota Humanities Council.
