Molly and her lit-termate, Amber, wereborn to be sold, but con-genital eye problemsruled that out. They weresurrendered and endedup at Chihuahua Rescue& Referral in FederalWay, WA.
The two dogswere placed in a fosterhome, and one day whenthey were outside, thefoster caregiver wit-nessed a raccoon attack-ing Amber. Molly leapedinto the fray to protectAmber, and the raccoonturned on her. By thetime the attack was over,Molly, who was alreadysightless in one eye, hadserious damage to herother eye.
The dogs wererushed to a veterinarian, but subsequent infectionrequired that the eyeballhad to be removed and, rather than leaving onesightless eye intact, heremoved both. She waseight months old.
One might thinkshe would be relegatedto foster care forever, butwhen she was 1-1/2years old, Lorna Proctorsaw her listed onPetfinder.
The Marysville,
WA, woman was looking
for a companion for hertoy poodle, and the factthat Molly couldn’t seedidn’t bother her. Sheadopted Molly and thedog fit into the familyseamlessly.
“She only hastwo limitations,” Proctorsays, “jumping up onthings and jumpingdown. She even taughtour other dog to chasethe cat. Her way of lettingyou know that she wantssomething is to stand onher hind legs and shiftfrom side to side, she willcontinue that until you
give her what she wants.”
She sings loudly, shakes her dog toys, plays tug of war andsteals her buddy’s toys. She’s mostly a dog likeany other, blind or not.
Besides beingblind, though, there’s an-other way she differs, thanks to Proctor and herdaughters. They take herto Chihuahua Rescueevents where she servesas a charming advocatefor special needs adop-tions.

Here’s somethingto smile about: You canenjoy sweet-tasting cakes, candies and drinks withoutrisking your smile.
That’s becausesugar-free foods and bev-erages can be made withsugar replacers known aspolyols, or sugar alcohols.
These are agroup of low-digestiblecarbohydrates that tastelike sugar but, according toboth the U.S. Food andDrug Administration andthe American Dental Asso-ciation (ADA), can help
you avoid tooth decay. The ADA adds
that many factors play arole in tooth decay, includ-ing cavity-causing bacte-ria; the availability offluoride; the type of sugarsor starches you eat; howoften you eat them; andhow well you take care ofyour teeth.
While the ADArecognizes the importanceof overall good nutritionand states “it is neither ad-visable nor appropriate toeliminate from the Ameri-can diet sugar-containing
foods that provide neces-sary energy value for opti-mal nutrition,” it stronglyrecommends “that majorefforts be made to pro-mote the use of sugar-freefoods or chewing sub-stances in place of sugar-containing foods thatinvolve a frequent intakeor repeated oral use... useof theses u g a r - f r e eproducts willcontribute toimproved oralhealth.”
