“We gave away daffodils for every purchase in March to celebrate our six year anniversary” says resident Betsy Henderson, creator and manager of the Rez, the FTJ resident store.

In the beginning, several residents formed a committee to get it off the ground, and it is still a resident driven effort. “I also want to give a special shout out to Dona Hook, resident Betty Buhre’s daughter,” says Betsy. “Dona has taken over the scheduling and accounting , and she is a pleasure to work with and a tremendous help.”

In the beginning, the Rez Committee tried out several different days and times to open the Rez and over time settled on Monday and Thursday from 10:00 to noon. The Committee also initiated a resident survey to find out what products residents would like to have available. The Rez stocks quite a few sundries and standard items that residents requested. Moreover, if someone has a personal request for a particular item, Betsy will do her best to buy that item. Some of the more interesting items stocked are hand-made cards, glass fusion jewelry made by a local artist, FTJ post-cards and hand-made wood items hand-crafted and donated by FTJ resident Ray Mitzner. The majority of the proceeds from the sale of all items sold in the Rez goes into the FTJ Employee Scholarship Fund.

Betsy says “We’re always looking for new volunteers. It’s a great place to get acquainted with residents and team members whom you wouldn’t necessarily see in your day. It’s a great social time for all of us!”

Meet Resident Jean Loomis

Your needs are always a priority to us. For more information regarding

these apartments, other available apartments, or any other questions you

may have regarding retirement living, please call Michelle Matz or Shirley

Robbins at 253-752-6621 or visit www.FrankeTobeyJones.com.

Jean is a woman who lights up the room. Her obvious joy of life radiates from her, enriching the lives of everyone. She was born

in San Juan, Puerto Rico and at 18 months her family moved to the continental U.S. She attended William and Mary College in Virginia, earning her degree in Psychology.

In 1943 she met Bob who proposed to Jean during a Navy leave, and they married within three months before Bob was deployed again. When his ship returned, it docked in Norfolk, Virginia where Jean was there waiting for him. With Bob’s service to our country over they could now move on with their new life together.

Their first stop was Dartmouth College in New Hampshire where Bob earned his MBA. After graduation he went to work for Weyerhaeuser in the Pacific NW where he began his career as Norton Clapp’s assistant and ended up in charge of new business development for Weyerhaeuser. Jean taught English as a second language in their home and also tutored at Another Door to Learning.

During Jean and Bob’s wonderful 49 year marriage they raised four sons and a daughter. They owned a cabin on Mount Rainer where they spent much time and where the family loved to ski together. They also enjoyed their beach house on Case Inlet, a magical place with a wonder-ful sandy beach to play on. Several black Newfoundlands and a boxer who didn’t like cats graced their lives as well. They enjoyed life to the fullest.

In Jean’s spare time she enjoys playing Bridge, reading, playing the piano and gardening. She loves her Tobey Jones apartment and enjoys gardening in the FTJ Residents Garden. “Franke Tobey Jones is the right place for me,” she says. Jean brings much sunshine and joy to other residents and we are glad she’s here.

Enjoy Your Age

There is a new group meeting at FTJ...a story telling group! They gather every month to tell stories around the monthly theme. In April they gathered to talk about literary or

cinematic figures or characters that influenced them. Join us on May 23 and/or June 20 to tell YOUR story! Every-one is welcome!

Jazz Dance Class

We are pleased to offer a new Jazz dance class on Mondays at 12:30 in our Wellness Center beginning April 11th. The class will explore tradi-tional, Broadway and contempo-rary styles in a fun, energetic atmosphere. You will learn basic fundamental jazz steps, isolation movements and vocabulary through a series of across the floor exercises and simple com-binations, culminating in a short dance routine. Please wear comfortable clothing you can move in and shoes that will allow you to turn and dance.

Our resident veterans had a great time meeting several Joint Base Lewis-McChord Officers in training when they visited our campus. They were here to learn about our resident’s military journeys and listen to their stories. It was a unique opportunity for both the soldiers and residents, and a great day was had by all! Before arriving at Franke Tobey Jones, these soldiers painted our Point Defiance ~ Ruston Senior Center kitchen! Thank you!

Soldiers Visit FTJ Veterans

Story Tellers ~ Everyone is Welcome!

FTJ will be investing in expanding services for residents and

the surrounding community of seniors. This expansion is in the

early planning phases but will include involvement from the

residents, families, and surrounding neighbors interested in

participating in the future of Tacoma’s vibrant senior communi-

ty. We’ll be launching a new section on our website in May, so

stay tuned for further exciting news about our expansion!

Honoring FTJ Donors and Volunteers

To celebrate National Volunteer Month, FTJ hosted our

annual Donor and Volunteer Appreciation Party on April 6.

More than 60 cherished volunteers and donors attended and

were thanked for their generous gifts of time and financial

resources to support seniors living at FTJ and in the

community.

Last year financial gifts to FTJ supported Employee Scholar-

ships, Charitable Subsidy, Health Care, Wellness programming,

Senior University, the Point Defiance ~ Ruston Senior Center and

twelve projects, from resident gardens to resident cultural and

educational programs, that enhanced the FTJ community. Over

3,000 seniors— on and off campus—benefit from these

programs each year. This would not be possible without the

investment of our generous donors.

Expansion Plans

Among the volunteers thanked were three residents whose

volunteerism earned them the Millie Highsmith Outstanding

Volunteer Award, six community volunteers received awards for

their outstanding work with residents, seven residents who

tutor at nearby Point Defiance Elementary School were thanked,

ten residents who volunteer in our campus store were also

recognized and thirteen Resident Ambassadors were honored.
