Rotary Club of Magill Sunrise Page | 1 We were treated to a very thought provoking lecture (whoops.....I mean presentation) by past president Ian Carman this week on the options to be considered when replacing the coal burning power stations at Port Augusta. The 2 options put to our club were gas or solar thermal. It was amazing that a topic I had never really thought of could be so interesting, especially when you think that it will have a 50 year lasting effect on you and your family. The first option of gas he advised would be the easy option both technically and commercially but it still had its downfall in that the CO 2 emissions would be subject to carbon pricing which could be costly and the fugitive emission of methane (something I know a little about, or so says my wife Tash). Methane is much worse than C0 2 when it comes to retaining heat, would cost a bit to contain. The second option of solar thermal really sounded interesting. Solar thermal; this option we were told is quite expensive due to being a new technology but has so many benefits, the main one of having zero CO 2 emissions. We were shown a picture of a solar thermal station where a large number of parabolic mirrors that track the sun were directing their concentrated sun light a large tower. Unlike traditional solar power, the solar thermal system keeps working at night because stored latent heat can be released to create steam that turn the turbines. It looked amazing and when you think of the sun/heat we get in this vast brown land it makes you wonder why this has not been implemented already. I guess cheaper, but dirty alternatives have always won the day The wind is another option that is one already in limited use around the country (South Australia leads the way) and we’ve all seen video of the giant turbines. This option is a cheap and efficient alternative and supplement to the solar thermal. Some of the last images shown were not surprising but they were alarming in that we have had 9 of the 10 hottest years on record since the year 2000. Ice caps are melting at alarming rates .........the time for change must be now. A reminder that I will not be at our meeting next Tuesday but I have found a club over in the west that I intend to visit so will let you know how I fared when I return Tuesday week. Past President Mark T will subbing in for me. President Greg Schuetze

We were treated to a very thought provoking

lecture (whoops.....I mean presentation) by past

president Ian Carman this week on the options to

be considered when replacing the coal burning

power stations at Port Augusta. The 2 options put

to our club were gas or solar thermal. It was

amazing that a topic I had never really thought of

could be so interesting, especially when you think

that it will have a 50 year lasting effect on you and

your family.

The first option of gas he advised would be the

easy option both technically and commercially but

it still had its downfall in that the CO2 emissions

would be subject to carbon pricing which could be

costly and the fugitive emission of methane

(something I know a little about, or so says my

wife Tash). Methane is much worse than C02

when it comes to retaining heat, would cost a bit

to contain.

The second option of solar thermal really

sounded interesting. Solar thermal; this option

we were told is quite expensive due to being a

new technology but has so many benefits, the

main one of having zero CO2 emissions. We were

shown a picture of a solar thermal station where a

large number of parabolic mirrors that track the

sun were directing their concentrated sun light a

large tower. Unlike traditional solar power, the

solar thermal system keeps working at night

because stored latent heat can be released to

create steam that turn the turbines. It looked

amazing and when you think of the sun/heat we

get in this vast brown land it makes you wonder

why this has not been implemented already. I

guess cheaper, but dirty alternatives have always

won the day

The wind is another option that is one already in

limited use around the country (South Australia

leads the way) and we’ve all seen video of the

giant turbines. This option is a cheap and efficient

alternative and supplement to the solar thermal.

Some of the last images shown were not

surprising but they were alarming in that we have

had 9 of the 10 hottest years on record since the

year 2000. Ice caps are melting at alarming rates

.........the time for change must be now.

A reminder that I will not be at our meeting next

Tuesday but I have found a club over in the west

that I intend to visit so will let you know how I

fared when I return Tuesday week. Past President

Mark T will subbing in for me.

1797 – Coal is officially discovered in New South Wales, Australia, providing the foundation for

Newcastle.

1810 – Daniel Chile declared its independence from Spain.

1895 – Daniel Palmer, founder of chiropractic treatment, makes the first chiropractic adjustment on

a patient.

Why does someone believe you when you say there are 4 billion stars, but check when you say the

paint is wet??

Magill Sunrise members are now enrolled on Roving Lifestyles

Access to the Roving Lifestyles website (http://www.rovinglifestyles.com.au/) has now been

provided to each of the Rotary Club of Magill Sunrise members.

We can now enrol our members and friends - shop - and start to reap the benefits.

A reminder - How it works

Merchants advertise their products or special deals on the Roving Lifestyles website.

Participating Clubs register (done).

Members of the Club are enrolled as ‘Rovers’ (done).

Rovers can log-on to the website and have access to exclusive offers from trusted merchants on

products and services at a fair and sustainable price.

A percentage of each sale is remitted to a nominated Rotary Club or program.

As a member, you may invite your Family or Friends to also enrol and shop for products and

services - meaning more benefits for everyone.

What’s Next?

You should now have received your log-on details and further instructions from Lindsay Davis

(the Magill Sunrise club coordinator).

Log in, reset your password and enter any other details you wish to store.

Check out some of the products already being advertised. Buy if you wish as a percentage of

the purchase price will be donated back to Magill Sunrise (minimum 5%).

Then:

• suggest other merchants, products and services that could be on Roving Lifestyles

• invite family and friends to also become Rovers (and further assist our club).

Why do it?

Magill Sunrise has a special opportunity to help develop this new initiative which aims to make

giving to the community a part of everyday life.

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of a worthy enterprise and in particular to encourage and foster

The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service.

High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying by every Rotarian of their occupation as an opportunity to serve

society.

The application of the ideal service by every Rotarian to their personal, business and community life.

The advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional people united in the ideal of service.

The Four Way Test of the things we think, say or do:

Is it the truth? Is it Fair to all concerned?

Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

For good food, good fellowship And the opportunity to serve through Rotary

…we give thanks.
