From your Pastor… “No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” (Jn 15:13). This is the phrase that captures the greatest form of love and generosity that anyone can share in this world. To love is to be generous, St. Paul says. One day a rich man approached Jesus and asked, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life.” Jesus answered, “…sell all that you have and distribute it to the poor, and you will have a treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me” (Luke 18:18). The gospel says that the man left very sad. To love is to be generous, we will know if our love is perfect in Christ when we have the ability to give back our time, our talent, our treasure to the Lord by being generous with the Church and one another without expecting anything in return. Mother Teresa will say, “We are called to give until it hurts.” When our lives are touched by greed or selfishness we turn in on ourselves. St. Paul re-minds us that love doesn’t seek its own interest. In his letter to the Philippians he says, “Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others” (Phil 2:4). To be generous is to forget about ourselves in order to meet the needs of others – even to the point of laying down our lives. However, there are many ways in which we can be generous without the extreme of giving up our lives. Offering a compliment, not focusing on mistakes or disagreements, making some time to listen to another, supporting the Church, donating to charity are just a few of the many ways we can be generous with our love. Someone once said, “If you want someone to help you, ask the busiest person and he/she will help you out.” There is a reason why he/she is busy, because she likes to work and help out. Perhaps we can learn something from this as well as the words of St. Paul as we pray for a deeper sense of generosity in our lives. Sincerely, Sincerely, Rev. Miguel González

EYEWITNESSES Today, the Feast of the Trans-figuration of the Lord, is a day of eyewitness accounts. The first, a vision reported by the prophet Daniel, was well known to Jesus and his apos-tles. The vision account was written in quite mystical and figurative language. It is a vision of heaven, powerful and memorable. There are flames of fire, burning wheels, the Ancient One, and a Son of Man. Clearly, Daniel saw something. But was it a

dream? Was it real? Was it merely a clever myth? Peter wants no such confusion about his vision! We are told in Mat-thew's Gospel what he and his friends James and John saw when they went up on the mountain with Jesus one day. Jesus warned the three witnesses to tell no one until "the Son of Man has been raised from the dead" (Matthew 17:9). Lest readers of one of the Gospels discount the story or simply write it off as a pious myth, Peter gives his own account of the Transfiguration of Jesus in his second letter to the church. He writes with authority, as an eyewitness. He reports this message from God concerning Jesus: "This is my Son, my be-loved, with whom I am well pleased," and he assures us that the message is "altogether reliable" (2 Peter 1:17, 19). Nadie tiene amor ma s grande, que dar la vida por los amigos" (Jn 15, 13). Esta es la frase que captura la for-ma ma s grande de amor y generosidad que cualquiera puede compartir en este mundo. Amar es ser generoso, dice San Pablo. Un dí a un hombre rico se acerco a Jesu s y le pregunto : "Buen maestro, ¿que debo hacer para heredar la vida eterna?" Jesu s respondio : "... vende todo lo que tienes y distribuye a los pobres, y tendra s un tesoro en el cielo. Entonces ven, sí gueme "(Lucas 18:18). El evangelio dice que el hombre se fue muy triste. Amar es ser gener-oso, sabemos si nuestro amor es perfecto en Cristo cuando tenemos la ca-pacidad de devolver nuestro tiempo, nuestro talento, nuestro tesoro al Se-n or, siendo generosos con la Iglesia y unos con otros sin esperar nada a cambio. “La madre Teresa dice: "Estamos llamados a dar hasta que duela". Cuando nuestras vidas son tocadas por la codicia o el egoí smo nos encerra-mos en nosotros mismos. San Pablo nos recuerda que el amor no busca su propio intere s. En su carta a los filipenses dice: "Que cada uno de ustedes mire no so lo a sus propios intereses, sino tambie n a los intereses de los dema s" (Filipenses 2: 4). Ser generoso es olvidarnos de nosotros mismos para satisfacer las necesidades de los dema s, hasta el punto de dar nuestras vidas. Sin embargo, hay muchas maneras en que podemos ser generosos sin el ex-tremo de renunciar a nuestras vidas. Ofrecer un cumplido, no centrarse en los errores o desacuerdos, hacer algo de tiempo para escuchar a otro, apoyar a la Iglesia, donar en caridad son so lo algunas de las muchas maneras en que podemos ser generosos con nuestro amor. Alguien dijo una vez: "Si quieres que alguien te ayude, pregu ntale a la perso-na ma s ocupada y e l / ella te ayudara ". Hay una razo n por la que e l / ella esta ocupada, porque le gusta trabajar y ayudar. Tal vez podamos aprender algo de esto, así como las palabras de San Pablo mientras oramos por un sentido ma s profundo de generosidad en nuestras vidas. Sinceramente,

TESTIGOS Hoy, la fiesta de la Transfi-guración del Señor, es día de testimonios de testigo ocular. El primero, una vi-sión que el profeta Daniel reporta, era muy conocido por Jesús y sus apóstoles. Es una poderosa y memorable visión del cielo. Tiene lla-maradas de fuego, ruedas encendidas, el sabio anciano y el Hijo del Hombre. Es

claro que Daniel vio algo. Pero, ¿fue un sueño? ¿Fue algo real? ¿O fue solamente un mito astuto? ¡Pedro no quiere que su visión sea confundida de igual manera! Nos cuenta el Evangelio de san Marcos lo que él y sus amigos Santiago y Juan vieron cuando subieron un día a la montaña con Jesús. Jesús les ordenó a los tres testigos que no dijeran nada hasta que "el Hijo del Hombre resucitara de entre los muer-tos" (Marcos 9:9). Por si los lectores del Evangelio dan por des-contada la historia o simplemente la descartan como un mito pia-doso, Pedro escribe su propia versión de la Transfiguración de Jesús en su segunda carta a la Iglesia. Escribe con autoridad, co-mo testigo ocular. Reporta este mensaje de Dios referente a Jesús: "Este es mi Hijo muy querido, al que miro con cariño", y nos asegura que el mensaje es digno de "creer(se) firmemente". Copyright © J. S.
