T THE CHURCH OF ST. JOHN THE EVANGELIST 71 Murray Avenue, Goshen, New York 10924 (845) 294-5328 - www.sjegoshen.org THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - OCTOBER 28, 2018 We are looking to hire an older high school or college student to clean and lock up McCaffrey Hall after home basketball games for both CYO and the parochial school league this year. If interested, please speak with me or drop me a line at [email protected]. + + + This Wednesday, we will welcome several thousand folks to Murray Avenue as they pursue that sweet treasure which brings joy and happiness: Halloween candy. This makes it nearly impossible for anyone to get here for a 5:15pm Mass (at which we have the privilege of receiving the sweet treasure that brings eternal joy and happiness). Therefore, on October 31, the daily Mass will be celebrated at 6:30am; there will be no late afternoon Mass and no adoration. + + + The schedule for All Saints’ Day is listed elsewhere in the bulletin. On Friday, November 2, the Commemoration of All Souls, Mass will be celebrated at 6:30 and 9:00am; there will also be a short service at St. John’s Cemetery at 10:15am. + + + Our cemetery is rightly a source of pride for the parish. It is a source of peace and consolation to know that the graves of our loved ones are shown proper respect – but that requires both a strong financial footing and consci- entious care. Thankfully, unlike many small cemeteries, ours has been well-administered through the years, so there’s no question of its continued maintenance and upkeep. Page 6 of today’s bulletin includes the regulations for our cemetery. If you hold a deed to any number of graves in St. John’s Cemetery, I would encourage you to read through them. I’d like to address here some commonly-asked questions: 1. Each grave sale includes an assessment for “perpetual care.” By law, every cemetery is obliged to have a re- stricted perpetual care fund; this mandate is based on the fact that the cemetery will reach a point where it’s full, and thus no longer has any income from grave sales or interments. Therefore, the interest from the per- petual care account would fund regular maintenance (e.g., mowing, snow removal, etc.) in perpetuity. 2. Perpetual care does not mean that the cemetery is responsible for individual monuments, headstones, etc. In fact, as the regulations make clear, the cemetery’s chief concern regarding monuments has to do with their size (of course, the presumption is that no monument would include anything that could be construed as antithet- ical to the Faith). If a stone is damaged by one of our contractors (for example, during the opening of an ad- joining grave), then that’s clearly the cemetery’s responsibility. However, if, for example, a headstone separates from its base because the adhesive dries out, that repair is the responsibility of the deedholder; it is not includ- ed under the perpetual care umbrella. 3. The same holds true for items placed on, around, or near graves. Every person has a different way of express- ing his/her grief at the death of a loved one; that being the case, I have always striven for a pretty liberal read- ing of the regulations (especially numbers 6 and 12). However, when there is a multitude of small items on or Continued on page 5

40 Days for Life

You’re invited to join other Christians for 40 Days for Life – forty days of prayer and fasting for an end to abortion; it began on September 26 and concludes on November 4. You’re also invited to stand and peacefully pray during a 40-day vigil in the public right-of-way near Goshen Planned Parenthood, 7 Coates Drive. St. John's Church sponsors every Friday during the campaign from 7:00am to noon. During these hours we try to have a minimum of two prayer volunteers per hour. Sign up sheets are in the back of the church if you're available to pray at Goshen Planned Parenthood, OR you can sign up to pray any day of the week by going to the website 40daysforlife.com/Goshen. If you’d like more information – and especially if you’d like to volunteer to help, please contact Wendy at 845-820-4366.

Please remember to pray daily for an increase in vocations to the priesthood and religious life.

near headstones, chances are that something is going to break, fall, or be moved; while every precaution and care is taken by the contractors who mow, prepare graves, etc., the cemetery cannot assume responsi-bility for such items.

Finally, after a careful examination of our cemetery budget and an analysis of our fees in light of what other ceme-teries charge, we are going to be making a modest increase in those fees on January 1, 2019. If you have been con-sidering purchasing a grave/graves in our cemetery, now would be the ideal time; simply call or visit the parish of-fice. As ever, we will always find a way to accommodate those who want Christian burial for a loved one, but find the cost to be a hardship.

+ + + Last week, our representative from the Cardinal’s Annual Stewardship Appeal (CASA) pointed out that we stand at a very impressive 282 donors for the year. The “record” for the last ten years is 284 donors in 2011. So, at her suggestion, I’d like to invite anyone who has not made a gift to the 2018 CASA to consider doing so. Frankly, at this point, it’s not about the size of the gift but the number of donors. So, if there are three folks who would con-sider giving $5 each, we’d set a new record for the number of donors; this would make our appeal rep happy (which in turn means she’ll call or email me less frequently – that would make me happy!). Gifts may be made online at www.cardinalsappeal.org; our parish number is 433. Faithfully your priest, Fr. George Hafemann
