This is Fr. Peter’s final weekend with us before he leaves for Rome via Michigan. I am ever grateful for his assistance over the last few weeks; he surely welcomes our continued prayers as he concludes his doctoral studies in biblical theology.
+ + + I had debated for several weeks about what, if anything, to write about the scandal caused by ex-Cardinal Theodore McCarrick and those who apparently covered for him. Last week’s release of the report by the grand jury in Pennsylvania, tasked with investigating the actions regarding abuse allega-tions in six of that state’s dioceses, has made my decision quite clear. As I started writing, it became evident that what I want to say would take more than a few pages. That, and the fact that I try to keep the bulletin a somewhat family-friendly medium, prompted a change in plans. To that end, you can find my thoughts on a blog I’d started years ago, but haven’t updated in awhile: opus2605.blogspot.com. If you do not have Internet access and would like to read it, please let me know; I would be happy to print out a copy for you. That being said, three points I’d like to make here: Every so often, we include the “required” announcement on child protection in the bulletin. I
have always presumed that anyone who believes abuse – sexual, physical, mental or emotional – has taken or is taking place would contact law enforcement first, but that’s apparently not always a given. So I’d like to state clearly and unequivocally what I believe should be standard procedure, here at St. John’s and everywhere else: if someone has reason to believe a cleric (i.e., bishop, priest or deacon) or a parish employee or volunteer is abusing anyone – child or adult – in any way, the first and immediate call should be to the police. It’s not like we live in Stalinist Russia – the police are not the enemy. (Going forward, I will be rewording that announcement to include what I’ve written above.)
We need to stop congratulating ourselves on how far we’ve come in terms of child protection since
2002. Background checks and “safe environment” training are necessary and important. But it’s now painfully obvious that this was like installing new sheetrock over a wall full of mold: every-thing looks nice on the outside, but the rot is still there – and covering it up won’t make it go away.
The Internet has exploded with theories as to how we got here and what to do about it; I’ll leave it
to the experts to debate those weighty topics. What I do have some expertise in is dealing with people and their souls – and, frankly, that’s all that matters right now. For every victim, whether his/her story has seen the light of day or not, there are a dozen others dragged under: parents, sib-lings, family members, friends, those who tried to raise alarms but were rebuffed…..The one thing – in fact, the only thing – that I have to offer them right now is my fervent prayer, as inadequate as that may be. Next week, I will write about what I am doing to make reparation for the sins of oth-er priests and bishops, and offer an invitation to those who wish to join me.
Faithfully your priest, Fr. George Hafemann
