A DAY IN THE LIFE 7:00 AM Delilah Rodriguez’s alarm rings. She gets out of bed and glances at her jeans and college sweatshirt. She can wear them tomorrow if she earns a casual Friday dress pass. Today, she puts on DREAM Charter High School’s standard business casual attire. DREAM Charter High School 8:15 AM Delilah arrives at school and turns in her homework. When she hands in assignments on time, it is marked in her professionalism review for the week. 8:30 AM Delilah joins her Advisory group for their daily check-in. She begins every day by talking with this group. Over time, they’ve become a close family of peers who share about a wide range of topics concerning high school life. At the end of the check-in, Delilah turns in her cell phone and receives a Chromebook to use throughout the day in class. 9:00 AM It’s an “A” Day on Delilah’s block schedule with 90- minute classes. The longer periods allow students to spend more time learning new topics and practicing skills. In her first class Contemporary American Literature, her teacher Mrs. Williams, recaps their last reading from Between The World And Me. The students have been exploring the essential question: Is the American Dream a blessing or a curse in American society? Alongside the reading, Delilah’s class is working on an essay. DREAM believes in giving students the chance to revise and edit, so Delilah will attend office hours to re-work her essay with feedback from Mrs. Williams this afternoon. If she scores high enough, the essay can be included in her college readiness portfolio. As a DREAM student, she demonstrates her college readiness by curating and defending a portfolio of college level work. 10:30 AM The bell rings and Delilah heads to class to work on math. When she first arrived at DREAM, she was nervous about taking the Algebra I Regents. She’s struggled with math in the past. During Problem Solving, Delilah revisits these topics and gets extra support to build confidence for the actual exam. 12:00 PM It’s lunch time and Delilah sits next to her friends Malik and Naz. They’re working on a proposal about off-campus lunch opportunities for students with consistent high professionalism reviews. No matter how the proposal goes over, they know it will be taken seriously. DREAM students have voice and choice in the decision-making at their school. 1:30 PM Delilah gets ready to head to Honors Global History, her final block of the day. She knows that honors courses on her transcript will make her more attractive to colleges, so she’s ready to take on the tough assignments. Today, the class works on a brief research paper on African and Chinese attempts to discover the new world. Delilah’s paper tackles the essential question: Was the European discovery of the New World inevitable? 3:00 PM Delilah heads back to Advisory to turn in her Chromebook and get her cellphone. Her advisor hands out the professionalism reviews for the week, and Delilah is excited to see that she has earned a casual Friday dress pass. She heads to Debate Club. DREAM’s after school opportunities include robotics, step and sports. In addition to offering extra-curricular programs, DREAM offers summer employment opportunities and personalized college access support. Each cohort of students is assigned a college counselor who begins working with them in the 10th grade. Next year, Delilah will meet with her college advisor to identify schools that interest her, make decisions about her upcoming courses, and discuss summer plans. 5:00 PM When Debate Club ends, Delilah is ready to head home. She stops by the office where the principal and a few of her teachers are talking with her classmates about starting a new mentoring club with younger students. 7:00 AM El despertador de Delilah Rodríguez suena. Ella se levanta y echa un vistazo a sus jeans y suéter universitario. Ella puede llevarlos mañana si gana un pase de viernes casual. Hoy ella pone la vestimenta estándar de negocios informal de DREAM Escuela Secundaria Chárter.

8:15 AM Delilah llega a la escuela y entrega su tarea. Cuando entrega su tarea a tiempo, se nota en su examen profesional semanal.

8:30 AM Delilah se une con su grupo de asesoramiento para su encuentro diario. Empieza cada día con este grupo. A lo largo del tiempo, llegan a ser una familia de pares que trata una variedad de temas referente a la vida en la escuela secundaria. Al final del encuentro Delilah entrega su móvil y recibe un Chromebook computadora para usar tras el día en sus clases.

9:00 AM Es un día “A” en el horario en bloque de Delilah con clases de 90 minutos. Los períodos largos dejan que los estudiantes pasan más tiempo aprendiendo nuevos temas y practicando nuevas habilidades. En su primer clase, Literatura Estadounidense Contemporánea, su maestra Sra. Williams resume la última lectura de Between The World And Me. 3:00 PM Delilah regresa al asesoramiento para entregar su Chromebook y recibir so móvil. Su asesor reparte los exámenes profesionales para la semana y Delilah se emociona ver que ella ha ganado un pase de viernes casual. Ella va al club de debate.

Las oportunidades extraescolares de DREAM incluyen robótica, baile “step” y deportes. Además de proporcionar programas extraescolares, DREAM ofrece oportunidades de empleo en el verano y apoyo personalizado para acceso a la universidad.
