My name is Taigh, and I’m a full time Network Marketer. Let me quickly tell you how I gotstarted and why I’m writing to you.

 As most of us do, I started my Network Marketing business on a high note.

I honestly thought I had 5 or 10 people who would surely be interested in joining my businessright out of the gates. I thought I could work hard for the first couple years, and retire at a

very young age. Everything was good in life – until...

I spent the next two years struggling to build my Network Marketing business. I’ve tried just

about everything that they suggested I do. From;

- Meeting in coffee shops- Approaching friends, family, and colleagues

- Hotel presentations- Phone parties- Home parties- Calling leads- Being a part of network groups (BNI and the city Chamber of Commerce)- Dropping off flyers at people’s doors- Posting flyers around town- Calling friends and family asking for referrals- Having a booth in trade shows, schools, and malls...

Building the business using these methods was not what I thought freedom would look like.

The traditional face-to-face methods of building the business started to really bother me.Thinking back on the number of hours I’ve wasted talking to people who never really qualified...

or thinking back to how I felt like I had to chase people to follow up with them; I knew in my

gut that there just had to be a better way to build this business.

I thought of quitting on a number of occasions. I had just about every reason to quit with all of 

the frustration I had experienced building the business in the first 2 years.

On top of all of that I was soon going to graduate from post-secondary and I had a decision to

make.

I could continue down the path I had gone to school for, which would lead me to the corporate

world of a 9-5pm job, travelling back and forth in traffic every day while someone told me

when I could take vacations. Or, I could I could try to make this Network Marketing thing work,

and live a lifestyle that I have always dreamt of.

It was around this time I was called foolish to opt-out of a Co-op Program at one of the finest

business schools in Canada – As I made the choice to chase my dreams.

Do you relate? Has anyone looked down on your decision to build a Home-based business?

Said that you were ‘crazy’ for doing so?

I was sure that if I just kept to the ‘Proven System’ I would find success eventually. So that’s

what I did.

I was as happy as could be for I had gone through the struggle and built my business to a point

where I could support myself. Having the flexibility and freedom to set my own schedule was

something I quickly got use to.

Though I must admit, I didn’t have much in terms of responsibilities.

 At the time I lived up in a 1 bedroom attic apartment. My ‘office’ was in the corner of my

bedroom and it really wasn’t a place I would want to present to prospects. (The staircase up

the side of the building wasn’t all that appealing).

So I was happy to be working the business full time. I always thought if I had more time Icould breeze through and build a massive organization.

I continued to follow the plan; to Invite, Present, Train... and I soon started to experience even

more frustration building my business.

 “How’s that?” you might be wondering. - Because I had hit the bottom of my names list- I tried everything that they told me to do- I was Sick of Chasing prospects, and following up with them- I was stuck, and I didn’t know what to do next

 All of the frustrations I had building the business part time, were Inflated as I went full time.

I was willing to try just about anything to make this thing work, but the strategies I was using

 just wasn’t getting me to where I wanted to go. I felt like I would take 3 steps forward and 2

steps back... over and over again.

I remember what I would tell people sitting down with them,

 “If you want something different, you have to do something different” 

But I wasn’t following my own advice. I then went on a search to find out a better way to build

this business.

I made some discoveries that have forever changed the way I view this business.

Looking back at how I was building my business, I realize that I have made some Fatal Mistakes

along the way...

The 7 Fatal Mistakes of a

Network Marketer:

Fatal Mistake #1: Employee Mindset

I was thinking of a better word for this, but it’s really just that. I had an employeemindset getting into this business. My whole life I’ve been trained to be an employee and whenI first got started in this business, I was beat down pretty hard because of it.

When I first got started I thought there would be a line up of people asking for my productsand wanting to join me in the business. But that just didn’t happen.

There were tremendous ‘growth pains’ as I changed my mindset from an Employee to aBusiness Owner.

I thought I understood this but soon realized that I had to take things to the next level if I trulywanted to see growth in my business.

I had to get rid of the Employee mentality.

Here’s what that looks like:

- Making someone else’s fortune as you settle for a paycheque- Being told what to do on a daily basis- Being in a place of need, rather than in control of your financial future- Settling in a job that’s “Not too Bad” but having a hunch that life could be much

better

How many times have you heard from a new business partner, “Oh, this business should beeasy” or “They are going to be great at it”. Only to find out that they just couldn’t make it.Something happened. It’s like one day they woke up - and it was all over.

Here’s something I’ve noticed. People give up in their minds before they ever make the call to

 ‘Cancel their account’. Don’t you ever wonder what happened? Even though they were soexcited just the week before!...? This baffles me when I see it happen but I realize that it startswith the thoughts they have.

  No one would ever open a McDonald’s franchise to just see how it goes for a couple

months.

  No one would invest half a million dollars to start a company to just see how things

might work.

  No one would start a new business and expect big returns in the first 3 months, and quit

if it didn’t happen.

We are spoiled in this business. We can start building a full-fledge international business for less

than a few thousand dollars – and somehow we start thinking that we’ll just “give it a shot”.Now I know this is not you for you wouldn’t be reading this report. You wouldn’t be interestedin the business or would have given up a long time ago.

But perhaps that’s why so many in this industry have an “employee mindset”.

It’s relatively inexpensive to get involved,and not much is lost when they decide to quit.

This mindset is deadly. The good news is that it can be worked on. When I lacked motivationand didn’t know where to start, a few materials really helped;

- Think and Grow Rich, by Napoleon Hill- Rich Dad Poor Dad, by Robert T. Kiyosaki- Jim Rohn- Personal Power II, by Anthony Robins (audio series)

Listen, I don’t list these things so you can say, “oh, well that sounds like a good idea”. No!Do yourself a massive favour, pick these materials up, and get exposed.

Our actions are guided by our beliefs. And if we don’t have the right beliefs, the rightfoundation, we’re screwed in this business.

SomethingDifferent,youNeedtogetExposedtoNewTrainingandMaterials.

So if you truly want different results in your life, you must get exposed to materials that willchange your thought patterns.

When people think that they don’t need to work on themselves or on their mindset to createthe life they really want, this is a Fatal Mistake.

Fatal Mistake #2: Thinking that Everyone Is Your Prospect

I believe that there is a reason why we think this... it’s because this is what they teach us!

Have you heard of the “3 foot rule” – Anyone who is within 3 feet of you is a prospect.Or telling your friends and family that, “I think you would be really good at this”.

Guess what, we don’t know that! I have been absolutely surprised to see who does welland who just ‘falls off the map’. We need to see the person in action. Yes, we can’t helpto think others will be better at building a business. But prejudging for the positive or negativeis a huge mistake. I have seen the ‘everyday woman’ build a bigger Network MarketingBusiness then an astute Financial Planner who has a contact list that reaches into thethousands.

On top of that, I don’t know too many people who feel comfortable getting out there

and meeting people with the intention of getting a chance to present an ‘Opportunity’. 

 After being in the business for a few years I realized how big of a mistake it is to think thateveryone will make a good business partner. If you have been in the industry for any length of time you know very well there are simply some people that you Do Not want to work with.

 Andwhataboutlifestyle?

 As I went full time in my business I realized how quickly you run out of warm market contacts

(people I know) to approach. Has this happened to you? You hit the bottom of your names listand you sit there wondering what to do next.

 At the time, I went out to find ways to market in my town.

I have never been comfortable meeting new people with the intention of prospecting them intomy business.

 And to imagine they teach us to prospect in elevators...

Here’s why this is a Fatal Mistake:

If we built this as a real business just like any other, we would understand that not everyone isinterested in what we have to offer. It doesn’t matter if there is a ‘new launch and people aregoing to get rich’, for if someone loves what they do for a living, and are happy with the moneythey make – they simply will not be interested and not make a good business partner.

Sure if you’re close f riends you could probably get them to join. But think about what comesafter signing someone into your business. Now you have to offer training and support. And if

you’ve ever tried, you would know that you cannot force someone to build their ownbusiness – it just doesn’t work.

Why not try finding the people who are looking for what we have to offer?

 You might have heard of “Target Market”. What this refers to is a particular group of peoplewho are interested in what you have to offer.

For some reason I didn’t think I had to pay attention to this. I was following the systems of making a names list and approaching everyone I know.

 After being in the trenches for a few years, I realized that not everyone is my prospect and Ineeded a way to find my ‘Target Market’. Find the people who were just like me – interested inbuilding a Home Based Business.

For some reason they teach us methods that were use back in the 80’s to build the business.

 As I’ve mentioned above I’ve done it all;- Meeting in coffee shops- Approaching friends, family, and colleagues- Hotel presentations- Phone parties- Home parties- Calling leads- Being a part of network groups (BNI and the city Chamber of Commerce)- Dropping off flyers at people’s doors- Posting flyers around town- Calling friends and family asking for referrals

- Having a booth in trade shows, schools, and malls...

Look at that list. Try to find one activity that was effectively communicating to my targetmarket.

 You won’t find it.

 All of these methods that I’ve tried did not take into account one simple idea,

“ArethesepeopleinterestedinwhatIhavetooffer?”

Not everybody is going to be interested in your products or your business opportunity.

What you need to do is learn how to Market your business. You need to learn strategies thatwill ensure you never hit the bottom of your contact list.

It’s like the example of running a Pizza Store.

When’s the last time you got a call from a pizza store seeing if you would like to order a pizza?Probably haven’t. Why? Well because this just isn’t an accepted business practice. How would

you feel if a pizza store did this? Annoyed? So then why do we think that the rules change forour business?

What a successful business does is promote and market themselves to let people know where

they can go for a particular problem.

This is called Marketing – another words – “To make known”.

So if we have a great product, and a great opportunity, then why not market ourselves to thepeople who are looking for what we have to offer? More on that later.

Our time is wasted chasing prospects that don’t qualify and working with people who end upquitting because they never really committed to building a business in the first place.

If you knew there was a better way, why would you ever go through the uncomfortable feelingsof trying to recruit your waitress?

Understanding that this is a business and you need to learn ways to communicate withinterested people, you can now see why thinking everyone is a prospect is a Fatal Mistake.

Fatal Mistake #3: Not Getting the Proper Training

When I got started, I went out and tried to build my business before I had the proper training.

Do you relate?

Imagine trying to build a house without a foundation.

 You just started framing the walls and said, “oh don’t worry, I’ll dig the basement later whenthe walls and ceilings are done”.

 You see, that’s ultimately what I wanted to do. Build my business without the proper training. You might be thinking, “I heard about a guy who got involved in a company and in his firstmonth made $105,000, how’s that possible?” 

Well, I’m not going to say that it’s not possible – because it is. But chances are he already builthis foundation before. As in, he already had the contacts and the skills developed fromanother experience.

Here’s one of the major turning points for me – and perhaps it’ll help you out.

When I studied the successful people in this industry and noticed there were somesimilarities – Every one of them insisted on investing in themselves.

Even the best of the best continued to get trained.

So you see, not having the proper training is like going into battle without everhaving shot a gun before.

 You might be excited that your new business partner wants to go out and do it all themselves,but you are setting them up for failure.

I think this goes back to not thinking that this is a real business. As though it’s some kind of hobby and all you have to do is, “Share the products”. That’s a lie, and it’s a mistake to think that you’re going to build a successful Network Marketing business with this strategy.

This Fatal Mistake really has two parts to it. First people don’t get proper training and are facedwith some questions and objections that they just don’t know how to handle. They getdiscouraged when they hit the bottom of the names list and the people they were “sure theywould be interested” weren’t, and now are stuck wondering what they should do next.

The second part to this Fatal Mistake is the training itself. Noticed I said “Proper training”.

Let’s face the facts. The retention rate of this industry sucks. And it probably does in yourbusiness too. The failure rate is simply too high.

 And what’s being done about it?

Nothing. That’s right, Nothing.

People continue to follow the same old trainings that have a known 90%+ failure rate. Is thismadness or what?!

This is a testament to that fact that people are not taught strategies that enable them to build a

successful business. What I’m trying to say is that their training systems suck.- Approaching Friends and family sucks- Calling leads sucks- Wasting time in coffee shops talking with unqualified people sucks- Chasing people following up sucks- Presenting to a group of unqualified people sucks

These methods... Suck!

 And on top of that, these are not viable ways to continuously grow a business.

People are not getting trained before they go out and build their business. And the training

they are exposed to is very hard to duplicate.

If you are serious about building a successful Home Base Business – you know, the one youimagined signing up for – You must take your training to the next level. And this doesn’t meanthe old fashioned company-duplicated systems.

One of the best things I did was invest in myself and in my business. I’ve spent over $5,476(and counting) to get trained on new strategies to build my business.

Fatal Mistake #4: Believing the Traditional Methods Are theBest Way to Build the Business...

Do you know the success rate of this industry? I am being generous to say no more than 10%of the people in this industry are able to comfortably support themselves off their Home BasedBusiness.

Does that mean you have to be a part of the other 90% of the failing crowd – No, of coursenot. But this needs to be talked about.

Why is it that we have such a high failure rate? Here are a few possible reasons:

- Most industries experience high turnover for people change jobs regularly- People join a company just to use their product anyways- People may only want to pay off the cost of their product

 You know, these are all valid reasons, and I believe them to be true.

But what about the people who are struggling and really do want to build theirbusiness?

Simply put – they continue to follow the same methods that do not work for most people!

So then I asked myself, “If people are struggling, why are they so hesitant to find somethingelse that works?” 

Well to be honest I took some time to face the facts and decide that I needed to do something

different. Most of us simply don’t know that there is another way to build this business. But

Iknewinmygutthattherehadtobeabetterway.

Most of the traditional methods are based on the idea that it’s a numbers game and eventuallyyou will find the right people. But as we are approaching people, it’s as though we are trying topush them into action... into our business.

But people don’t like being pushed. They like doing things because it was their idea.

That right there is the essences of marketing. Showing people that what you have to offer willhelp them with what they need or want.

So there is a completely different mindset when we think about building with New Strategies.

Notice that I’ve called it, Traditional Methods. This is because they are activities that have been

proven to work (for some), but lack focus. What you need are Strategies.

Fatal Mistake #5: Buying Leads

 As I continued to build my business, I decided to work Harder and started working with leads.

 A ‘lead’ is a person who has filled out a form expressing interest in working from home. Therewere a few others I knew who were purchasing leads and said that it was great... Thinking back on it, they never spoke about much success with new distributors... just that it was going to happen.

I purchased batches of 100 leads at a time and called every one of them. I would even calltwice and leave messages... More often than not - No Answer.

Even worse, out of the hundreds of calls I made and left a message, I only ever received one,yes, ONE return phone call.

To say the least, it was not a good strategy. But fundamentally here’s why

Number one, leads are never as qualified as you would think. It doesn’t matter how “real time” or company specific they are.

Whenever you make a call to see if they are looking for an “opportunity to build a business fromhome”, you are coming from a place of need.

Understand this, people are looking for leaders.

Buying leads starts off with the totally wrong mindset. If you are calling leads, you probablyalready have this gut feeling (I know I did) – but I’ll say it straight out -

Fatal Mistake #6: Believing that this Business Offers MultipleStreams of Income

I use to talk to people about how you can build multiple streams of income if you build thisbusiness.

 And that’s true if you continue to work at your day job. But a lot of people want to turn thisbusiness into something that can be full time.

Well, when I was able to go full time in my business I realized that I was going against what Iwould teach people. Building my primary business by itself, I didn’t have multiple streams of income.

I was then exposed to an idea that has forever changed the way I view my business.

This is what’s known as a funded proposal.

Here’s how it works.

If someone is interested in learning more about how they can build a business from home, if they’re serious chances are they will be willing to purchase information from a credible source.

If you are able to offer an inexpensive but valuable product, that can be put towards youradvertising expenses.

For Example.

Let’s say Mary Smith is looking into the opportunity of being able to build a business from homeso she can stay home with her kids. But she’s hesitant and doesn’t really know who to trust. It just seems like everyone is trying to recruit her into their business.

 At this point, Mary is interested, but not yet ready to join a company.

If you advertise a solid inexpensive product to Mary that will help her get what she wants(to be able to work from home)... there’s a few good things that has just happened.

1) Mary will better understand what it means to build a business from home2) Mary will have confidence that you know what you’re talking about, and can connect her

with materials that will help her work from home. (You are now the expert)3) You now can offset the cost of gaining a new potential business partner by getting a

 ‘referral commission’ for that sale.4) And you have ‘pre-trained’ this new potential business partner on what to expect in

building this business.

So the idea is to lead with a product that doesn’t demand a high level of commitment.

 You see, people are willing to purchase an info product to learn more about a topic – it doesn’tmean they’re ready for the next step.

So instead of having our potential business partners walk out the door empty handed becausethey weren’t ready to commit to a business – offer them something that will show them howthis business can be built.

It’s a win-win.

Think about it. Do you think the experts in network marketing have home parties? Or arecalling leads?

Have you ever looked at a top leader and said to yourself, “That would be cool to be able towork with them”.

Fatal Mistake #7: Thinking That You Can’t Build Online

Go ahead and ask the leaders you know. I’m willing to bet that most of them feel that this

business needs to be built using the traditional methods – Only.

 As we seen, these methods are leaving a lot of people frustrated. Why are they frustrated? - Because they have hit the bottom of their names list- They don’t want to stand up in front of a group a present- They’ve tried everything that they’ve been told- They are Sick of Chasing prospects to listen to their ‘opportunity’ - They don’t have a lot of money to spend on a business that’s not profiting - They are being told to work on their belief even though it’s become their new religion.- They don’t know what to do next and how to do it
