2 JULY 2011 THE ASTROLOGICAL eMAGAZINE

From theDesk of the Chief Editor

We are happy to present you, our esteemed readers, the July 2011 issue of The Astrological eMagazine. This months issue is edited by my son Raman Suprajarama, and assisted by his brother Raman Siddharthaas we are travelling in USA.

The lead article is by Dr. B. V. Raman who says Music is an astrological remedy. He tells us According tothe Hindus, the seven musical notes (Sa, Ri, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, Ni), emanate from the five faces of LordSiva when He performed His great dance. The whole system of music is evolved from Nada or sound. Nadahas its origin in Akasa which pervades the whole universe. Dr Raman says that vibrations of the air actingupon the ear give the idea of Nada or sound and the vibrations of the sound harmonise with the planetsmotion. We write on how sleep disorders can be set right by the application of Vastu principles. A personworking several shifts of the day and night gets his or her biological clock triggered improperly and sleep isinduced when the need is to be awake and keeps him or her awake when the need is to sleep!

Learned Yagnavalkya educates on the Atmakaraka. He says a mix-up of three types of Karakas Naisargika,Chara and Sthira can mess up any predictive effort. It is the strength or weakness of the Atmakaraka thatdetermines the general potential of any horoscope, he concludes. Late Mr. Sita Ram Iyengar who was astrong believer in the welfare of cattle, and was in the view that the cattles milk is for its calves and notproper for human consumption. We have Prof. Gupta writing on the sixth house that he refers to as an evilhouse that manifests in physical and mental suffering. The article is reproduced from an earlier issue of TheAstrological Magazine. Ms. Uta Rampersad details out the stress ridden modern world. Lead Article

MUSIC IS SAMAVEDA while astrology is Upaveda. The music and astrology are intimately related toeach other. In fact, astrology is in essence a part of music,in its more subtle aspect.

Only very few people, if indeed any, can be consideredas wholly unsusceptible to the influence of music. Butbecause of its intangible and indefinable properties, thevalue of this when considered in its aspects of moral guideand character moulder, is usually underrated.

Music as an instructor is sui generis and employs amethod all its own differing fundamentally from any othermethod through which intelligence can be imparted to thehuman understanding.

Science of ScienceThe Hindus held and still hold music in the highestperfection and called it the Science of Science, the richsource whence all other spring. Thus it is not throughreflection or ratiocination that the element of music entersour consciousness, but on the contrary music depends forits true appreciation upon the suspension of these veryfunctions. Evidently there are centres in the humanconstitution that do not require the slow and cumbersomemachinery of thinking and reasoning to transmitimpressions into consciousness.

A poem or a painting however exalted its character, mustbe intellectually understood in order to be thoroughlyappreciable but in listening to music every effort to analyseits technical make-up immediately makes us unfit to partakeof its inner moral sense.

Take the compositions of Sri Thyagaraja. The wonderfulconceptions of this master-genius, which he embodied inmusical compositions, entered his consciousness withoutany assistance of the intellectual faculty.

The several elements of composition appeared to himbefore his inner vision as the fitting scenes in a movingpanorama, presenting detail after detail, the one passing

out of his consciousness as the other entered, until thewhole totally full-orbed and rounding out in all its detailsemerged from the unknown and the invisible to pass indramatic order before his mind. Thus music seems to drawits elements from a source far beyond the reach ofintellection and carries on a direct communication betweenthe Human Soul and Universal Soul; whereas astrologydrawing its elements from those distant planetary bodiesestablishes a communication between the macrocosmcomprehended by the planetary systems and themicrocosm comprehended by the individual man.

The creations of a musical genius have no patterns in theworld of forms, but are limitless expressions of originalspiritual Vision, delivering intuitional messages without thedistorting medium of ratiocination.

Seven Musical NotesAccording to the Hindus the seven musical notes (Sa, Ri,Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, Ni), emanated from the five faces ofLord Siva when He performed His great dance. The wholesystem of music is evolved from Nada or sound. Nadahas its origin in Akasa which pervades the whole universe.Vibrations of the air acting upon the ear give the idea ofNada or sound and the vibrations of the sound harmonisewith the planets motion.

Ragas and Musical NotesRagas are presided over by certain Rasis and Nakshatrasand influence the individuals born under the appropriateRasis and constellations. The planets of our solar systemcan be located on the octaves of music thus:

The planets are located on the musical scale according totheir inherent predominant electric and magnetic qualityand quantity. The above is only a tentative arrangementbased on the information found in some ancient astrologicalbooks. The following Rasis are said to preside over thefollowing ragas:

    Ragas Planet

    Bhairavi Bhupala

    Bangala Sriraga

    Vasantha Saranga

    Panchama Kumbha

    Kanya Meena

    Vrishabha Simha

    Dhanus Vrischika

In the above schedule Bhairavi is said to be ruled by Saturn. The Bhairavi Raga is adapted to the sublime and is gravein movement. Saturn though classed as an evil planet, embodies the noble attributed of love and religion. Saturnno doubt gives suffering but gives understanding too. Thenatives of Saturn are contemplative and serious. The SriRaga is sung in the dewy season at eve and ischaracteristic of love and mildness. Compare this withthe characteristics of Venus.

The Ragas are marked by a following style varied bydifferent sentiments. The vibrations of music areconsidered miraculous in their power as the singer caninduce men, animals and even inanimate Nature to do hisbidding. They have a succession of tones so arranged asto excite a feeling of the mind. It is held that one who hasthe Knowledge of the proper use of the voice and cancontrol it at will, can stimulate the mind to action andawaken the soul till it becomes one with the Absolute.

Moon and MusicTake the horoscope of a man in which the Moon is inconjunction with Saturn, Mars and Rahu. The state ofmind of such a person, at the slightest provocation canbetter be imagined than described. The remedy is to bringhim into contact with pleasant music. The musical soundswill obliterate the evil tendencies of the maleficconjunction. The sound vibrations released say when aVeena player proforms a melodious piece-acts on thenerve junctions of the person and makes him overcomehis anger.

For the normal disposition of an individual each planetmust contribute its optimum quota of energy. Sound, heat, light, magnetism, electricity are all different forms of the

same energy and under certain it is possible to transformsa lower form of energy into a higher one and vice versa. When there is a conjunction of Saturn, Mars and Rahuwith the Moon, there is an excess concentration of evilenergy which is to be tapped off to render the personquite normal. When certain select tunes are of courseadjusted forms of sound vibrations a kind of energy-have the power to tap the evil planetary energy and actas a remedy. It is said, good or evil nature of the influenceindicated by the planets at the time of birth can be alteredby requisitioning different kinds of vibration of forces.Music Mantras, homas and Japams furnish some of themusic to achieve the object. Music or Mantras or Japamscan be very efficacious only when the musician, Mantragnaand the pandit who performs the Japans has the necessaryauthority as well as the needed competency. Every thoughtis a vibration and causes an electric vibration in the mind.Similarly music means collective harmonious soundvibrations and they cause an electric vibration in the brainand such electric vibrations are nothing but planetaryvibrations.

Through the agency of music we are ushered intosanctuary of divinity and receive the moral idea inundefined purity. Language fails utterly to describe or evento hint at the thrills of silent that pierce our being when welisten to the magic of harmonic sounds. Lifted up by themighty soul stirring waves of rhythm we feel as if carriedthrough spheres of love and beauty towards the altar ofeternal. We become suddenly filled with a sense of exaltedmorality and sympathy for the forces and powers thatmake for good; the moral impulses received are of thehighest order and furnish an ideal guide for human conduct. It is that these exalted notions do not always obtain apermanent seat in our ordinary consciousness but giveway to other influences when the music has cleared torule us with its melodies. But it is also true that everyrepetition of subjecting ones self to such elevating influencetraces deeper and more defined channels in the mind untilfinally a direction of thought has been established and thetide of our moral nature has been directed permanentlytowards the good and the ideal.

Planetary AfflictionsJupiter is the planet of intellect. Venus (and to some extentMercury) is the planet of feeling. When is in the fourthhouse one will have an for music whereas when Jupiteror Mercury is there the native will be intellectual. Theinfluence which music exerts on the animal creation isanother evidence of its super-intellectual source. Musicis an appeal not to the intellectual process, but to thefeelings and emotions. Therefore have an eye upon the
