Ode to a Teacher“My favourite teacher is

Mrs. Patras. She teaches us

by giving examples… She

is simple and sweet. She is

strict in teaching but her way

is simple... because of her,

our class is no 1 in discipline.

She is the best teacher in our

school. I love her.”

Child is my refuge. I know that there is someone to understand

my problems as a parent and help me become a better mom.

—Komudi Bhandari, Chandigarh

The article Mean Little Girls in

your August issue was the story

of my 5-year-old daughter. We

move cities frequently and my

little one has met new sets of

people every time. Sadly, most

of them haven’t been nice to

her. Initially, I used to join in

with my own tears when she was

shunned. But now I give her long,

tight hugs each time she feels

dejected. On our way to school

we sing a Tagore song together:

Jodi tor daak shune keu na ashe

tobe akla cholo re (If they answer

not to thy call, walk alone). It

gives her the courage to fi ght

the odds through the day.
