World of Maths incursion, K-6 Dear Parents It is hard to believe that we are now in May which in the Church, is the month of Mary. Every Friday during May, we will say a decade of the Rosary at the assemblies. To help us with our prayers, Fr Son and our parish have very kindly donated a set of rosary beads for each child in the school. The Rosary is a set of ten Hail Marys which when prayed as a school sounds beautiful. The word ‘Rosary’, sounds like ‘roses’, and I have been told that praying the Rosary is like sending roses to Heaven! MOTHERS’ DAY Each year at St Michael’s, we like to acknowledge our mothers and grandmothers in a small way. Usually, we put on a light breakfast and a couple of classes present a lovely assembly item. Next Friday, 8th May, we will be doing it once again. This year, we are using a different caterer. Therefore, can you please send back the forms indicating how many mothers and grandmothers will be attending. Please note that the day celebrates Mother’s Day and not Children’s Day. We will only be catering for mothers and grandmothers as it becomes expensive to cater for over 200 children as well (not to mention the difficulty of supervising that many people in the Hall at one time). Thank you for your understanding. The breakfast starts at 8.00am and the children are welcome to stay with their mothers and grandmothers until 8.30am when they need to go to their classes to prepare for assembly. SCHOOL CLIMATE SURVEYS Some of you would have received letters from the Catholic Education Office asking you to participate in an online survey about the climate and culture of our school. The collated data is used to help us with strategic planning and it is important that you complete the survey if you were chosen at random to do one. They must be done by Friday 8th May. SACRED SAINTS Our first game will be held at Maida Vale Reserve next Friday 8th May from 1.15pm to 2.15pm. We will be playing against St Brigid’s School in Middle Swan. You are most welcome to come along and support our teams! Laurie Bechelli PRINCIPAL CENTENARY CROSS As our Centenary celebrations draw to a close, we are proud to present our Centenary Cross. Each student and staff member from 2014 decorated a gold, metal cross (you may remember the gold crosses that welcomed us in the entrance of St Joseph's Church at our Centenary Mass last year). These have now been artistically arranged to decorate our wooden Mercy cross, which was made by Mr Arno Liebregts. Our 'Centenary Cross' has been positioned in the stairwell, in the old convent section of our beautiful school, a fitting tribute to our Mercy heritage and to 100 years of growing in faith and knowledge. through the bank account.

Alternatively, direct debit forms are available from the school office if you wish to set up a regular payment. If you wish to apply for HCC discount on the tuition fee portion of the account, please come to the office to fill in a HCC form and present a copy of your concession card. UNIFORM SHOP OPENING HOURS

Monday mornings 8.30 – 9.00am

Thursday afternoons 2.30pm – 3.15pm ABSENTEE LINE: 6278 9802 Please phone the number above if your child is absent from school. We ask that you do not email individual class teachers regarding absence, but use the dedicated phone line instead. You will also need to give a signed note of explanation to the class teacher on your child’s return to school.

TRASH FREE TUESDAY We ask that on every Tuesday you are mindful of the way you package your children’s lunchbox to minimise waste at our school. Ideally we would love to see no wrappers, and all food packaged into containers.

NO PARKING IN KISS AND RIDE! Please don’t park in the Kiss & Ride and leave your vehicle. It badly impedes the flow of traffic and holds up other families who are trying to drop children off.

If you need to help your child out of the car or escort them to the classroom, please park your car elsewhere.

SCHOOL IS A NUT FREE ZONE St Michael’s School is an Allergy Friendly School.

We have students who can experience a life threatening reaction to tasting, touching or smelling ground and tree nuts.

Students should not bring ANY items of food where the key ingredient is nuts. This means pastes such as Nutella and Peanut Butter; raw nuts such as almonds, pistachios, cashews and peanuts; or foods with nuts as a main ingredient, such as muesli bars or

chocolate bars containing nuts.

We ask that these products not be

brought to school .

NO PARKING at the Senior’s Centre

We have had another request from staff at the Senior’s Centre over the road that parents please, refrain from parking there ANYTIME before and after school.

The elderly people who use the centre often have mobility issues and need to park as close to the Centre as possible. Having members of our school community taking up parking spots is seriously inconveniencing our seniors. Thank you for your cooperation.

PERFORMING ARTS If any children would like to perform individually at the upcoming Performing Arts Festival, please see Mrs Stewart no later than FRIDAY, 8th MAY.

LATE ARRIVALS To avoid being marked absent, all children who arrive at school after 8.40am MUST sign in at the office. We ask for your cooperation in ensuring your child is ready for class to commence promptly at 8.40am.

Netball We have 42 eager netballers from Year 3 - 6 looking forward to taking to the courts for the first round of the winter netball competition at Noranda this Saturday. A big thank you to all the parents who have volunteered to coach, manage and be good supporters of the children. Netball at St Michael’s School could not exist without your support. I would also like to make special mention of the 6 ex-St Michael’s students who have returned to coach and umpire. A further example of the wonderful community spirit we share.

I wish all our netballers an enjoyable and rewarding season! Lisa Grazia Netball Coordinator 2015

Assistant Principals’ Update

MORNING FITNESS This term for Morning Fitness we will be concentrating on Cross Country Training, as last year our Interschool Carnival results improved quite considerably. We will have the training on the BIC 8:40-8:55am on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. The students can either wear their sports shoes to school on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, or bring them along to school and change into them. PRE-PRIMARY MASS CANCELATION Pre-Primary were scheduled for a Mass, Wednesday 13 May, but as Father Son will be away on a pilgrimage and it is NAPLAN Week we have decided to cancel this Mass. The Mass will be rescheduled later in the year.

MOTHERS’ DAY BREAKFAST The Mother's Day Breakfast will be held on Friday 8 May in the School Hall at 8am. It would be appreciated if you could return the slip on your invitation to advise us of numbers by Wednesday, 6th May. We would like to invite the mothers and grandmothers of the St Michael’s School Community to our Mother’s Day Breakfast followed by assembly. All welcome.

WINTER UNIFORMS Winter uniforms are now being worn in Term 2. The transition into the winter uniform is now over and we would expect students to be wearing their full winter uniform. Special thanks to parents who are working hard to keep their children presented at a high standard with regard to uniform presentation. LIFELINK On Thursday 30 April, Mr Bechelli, Leila Ogilvie and Harry Grazia represented St Michael’s School at the Pre Launch of LifeLink Day. Archbishop Costelloe opened the launch to personally communicate his vision and plans for LifeLink Day 2015. Each school was given a pack containing the essential resources for the implementation of LifeLink Day and the representatives had the opportunity to engage with Archbishop Costelloe. The Official Launch of LifeLink Day 2015 will be held on the Wednesday 3 June 2015. Jacquie Fox and Lisa Liebregts
