3d Generation Junior Bay Chairs: Elizabeth Backus Barker & Kate Loper KeaneContinuing the family tradition of supporting junior
sailing, elizabeth Backus Barker and Kate Loper Keane are cousins who will be the 2019 I-LYA Junior Bay week Chairs. Their grandfather, John h. Backus, chaired Jr. Bay in 1966, and their mothers, Susan Backus Starr and Gretchen Loper co-chaired in 2001. Growing up in Southern Ohio, Liz and Kate sailed at “Pram Camp,” an overnight sailing camp at Cowan Lake. They soon realized how much more sailing was on Lake erie and spent their summers sailing out of Vermilion. There, they made life-long friendships (Kate married a sailor from Sandusky Sailing Club) and still have many friends from I-LYA Junior Sailing.
Growing up in a sailing family with many strong female sailors, Liz and Kate’s first lessons were how to use duct tape and to trailer boats. They both have sailed Thistles, J22s, J24s, and Tartan 10s at National and world Championships and numerous Rolex women’s Keelboat Championships. Kate headed up the Sailing Club at Miami university and coordinated MCSA regattas. Liz sailed for St. Mary’s College of Maryland and became an honorable Mention All-American women’s skipper. Both Liz and Kate still race whenever possible. Liz and Kate haven’t missed a Junior Bay week since 1991, and are excited to keep the tradition going and volunteer in 2019!

2019 I-LYA Junior Traveler Series
The Junior Traveler Series is a summer-long series of weekly regattas hosted by I-LYA member clubs which offers an increased opportunity to race close to home. Series awards will be presented to the top finishing skippers and crew in each qualifying fleet based on the best five regatta finishes at any of the qualifying events. There is also a Team Trophy awarded each year to the top finishing club. Registration and scoring for the series and each qualifying regatta will utilize noticeofrace.net.
Sailors must be at least 7 years old and can participate in the Traveler Series up to and including the summer immediately following their senior year of high school. The Notice of Series is available online on the Traveler Series page under Junior Sailing at I-LYA.org.

I-LYA Clubs Host National Championship
In 2018, three of the fourteen uS Sailing Championships were hosted by I-LYA clubs, sailed on Lake erie, and supported by The Yachtsmen’s Fund. how fortunate we are to have the race management teams, resources, volun-teers, and support boats needed to host these national caliber events.
In July, 40 teams of young women from around the country competed in 420s at Mentor harbor Yachting Club for the 2018 uS Junior women’s Doublehanded Championship for the Ida Lewis Trophy. Fourteen local sailors representing hoover SC, Cleveland YC, edgewater YC, Mentor harbor YC, and Put-in-Bay YC participated. Grace Squires and Michaela O’Donnell of hoover Sailing Club finished 13th overall and emma Friedauer, also from hoover, received the sportsmanship award. In January at the National Sailing Program Symposium in Florida, MhYC received the Petersburg Yacht Club Trophy in recognition of its excel-lent planning and execution of the event. hats off to MhYC, event Chair Kathy Allyn, PRO Jamie Jones and their crews for hosting a top-notch regatta.
when North Cape Yacht Club hosted the Chubb u.S. Junior Championships in August, Dr. Matt Dubois, chair of the u.S. Junior Sailing Championships Committee, was on hand to welcome 93 youth sailors to compete for the Sears Cup and Bemis and Smythe Trophies. The Principal Race Officers — Matt Bounds, Barbara Shaffer, Jamie Jones, and Steve harris — were all from I-LYA. Additionally, Regatta Co-Chairs Robert Gordenker and Chip Gossman had the support of the NCYC membership, nearby residents, the local lightning fleet, and an “ARMY of volunteers.”
I-LYA junior sailors were present in full force as well after sweeping the Area e Championships held at Rochester Yacht Club in July. Competing for the Sears Cup, Jack and Annika Vanderhorst (ewYC) and Meghan Dieball (GIYC) finished fourth in lightnings with numerous top five finishes. Grosse Point Yacht Club sailors Michael Kirkman and Zach Rockwell were 10th in the C420 class. Finishing 14th in the C420, Ian Reimel and Zoe hoctor (hSC/NCYC) also received the Bemis Sportsmanship Award. henry Rolander (CLSA) and Spencer Barnes (CYC) competed for the Smythe Trophy in laser radials, finishing 14th and 17th, and henry was awarded the Faye Bennett Sportsmanship Award.
In late September, the 2018 u.S. Team Racing Championship for the historic George R. hinman Trophy was hosted by The Foundry, Cleveland’s Community Rowing and Sailing Center. event Chair Sam Patterson and PRO Steve harris pulled off three full days of non-stop team racing showcasing both our sport, Cleveland’s waterfront, and the positive impact of The Foundry.
I-LYA thanks all the volunteers who made these events possible.
These are the 14 I-LYA sailors who participated at the US Sailing Junior Women’s Doublehanded Championship at Mentor Harbor Yachting Club.
Pictured at Chubb Nationals are I-LYA sailors (L to R) Ian Reimel, Zoe Hoctor, Spencer Barnes, Meghan Dieball, and Jack and Annika Vanderhorst. Missing from the photo are Henry Rolander, Michael Kirkman, and Zach Rockwell.
