Remembering Maureen Schultz

Maureen Schultz passed away last Friday, December 29, 2017. She was a long-time parishioner of St. Catherine of Siena Church and the Director of Religious Education at St. Catherine's during the '80 and 90's into the early 2000’s, and was at the forefront of pro-

viding religious education to the Hispanic community for the entire San Fernando Valley. She has returned home to the God whom she served, and will not be forgotten. Eternal rest grant unto Maureen oh Lord, and let Perpetual Light shine upon her. May she rest in peace. Amen. For more information on services, please contact Our Lady of Lourdes, (818) 349-1500.

Maureen Schultz falleció el viernes pasado, 29 de diciembre de 2017. Fue feligresa de la Iglesia de Santa Catalina de Siena y Directora de Educación Re-ligiosa en Santa Catalina durante los años 80 y 90 hasta comienzos de los 2000, y estuvo a la vanguardia de brindar educación religiosa a la comunidad hispana para todo el Valle de San Fernando. Ella ha regresado a casa con el Dios a quien sirvió, y no será olvidada. Que el Señor le dé descanso eterno y brille para ella la luz eternal. Que des-canse en paz. Amén. GOD’S PROMISE TO ALL PEOPLE Today Isaiah reminds the people of God that the land shall be restored to their posses-sion, they shall rejoice to see their people re-turn from the bondage of exile, and that they shall be a light to the nations. In other words, through the people of Israel, the Savior shall come to all people who seek God with a sin-cere heart. This brings joy and the radiance of God’s glory to all the world and to all people everywhere. What is the Black Nazarene? The Black Nazarene refers to a life-sized, dark colored statue of Jesus Christ that was brought to the Philippines from Mexico by the first group of Augustinian Recollect Friars sent by Spain. The statue was carved by an Aztec carpenter. Jesus is depicted genuflecting under the weight of the Cross that bore during his Passion. In Quiapo Church in Manila, the original image survived the great fires that destroyed the church in 1791 and 1929. It also withstood the great earthquakes of 1645 and 1863 and the destructive bombing of Manila in 1945 during World War II. It is said that the image was charred black in a fire that broke out on the ship during its trip to Manila from Mexico. It arrived on May 31, 1606, in this form and has always been depicted as such.

¿Quién es el Nazareno Negro? El Nazareno Negro se refiere a una estatua de color oscuro de tamaño real de Jesucristo que fue traída a Filipinas desde Méxi-co por el primer grupo de Frailes Agustinos Recoletos enviados por España. La estatua fue tallada por un carpintero azteca. Jesús es representado en genuflexión bajo el peso de la cruz que llevaba durante su Pasión. En la Iglesia de Quiapo en Mani-la, la imagen original sobrevivió a los grandes incendios que destruyeron la iglesia en 1791 y 1929. También resistió los gran-des terremotos de 1645 y 1863 y el bombardeo destructivo de Manila en 1945 durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial.
