Last week, I was privileged to
participate in the shalom zachor
of my newest nephew, born in
the U.S. to Goldies sister and her
husband, Debra and Sruli
Ehrenberg (Mazal tov!). As I have
said in the past, we miss a lot of
smachot being so far away
(including his brit milah, which
will happen after press time, so
I dont know the name yet), and
it is terrific when circumstances

Have you ever wondered
how we could apply modern
technology to the challenging
task of being a leader? Its easy
to be critical and say that
these days there are no real
leaders in the secular political
realm, nor for that matter is
there universally respectedand accepted leadership in the
Jewish community.
But Im really not sure where
the fault liesin leaders who
might possibly be short on quali-
fications or accomplishments,
or in the attitude of the multi-
tudes who desire to be led.
Someone said to me the
other day that he didnt under-
stand why we need human
leaders at all in the political
arena or in Jewish life, when a
well-programmed computer
system could make precisedecisionsand get it right.
For example, if the White
House had a carefully pro-
grammed computer system, do

My father left me a few mil-
lion. Its been over two decades
now, and Im not sure what Im
going to do with those millions.
Ive frequently thought about
using them for some productive
and educational purpose. Maybe
I would do what so many other
children have done before me,
and use them as a way of perpet-
uating his memory, his time
here in this world and all that he
accomplished as well as the
important things that he impart-
ed to us, his children.
I know youre thinking that
what my dad left methose few
million, that isare dollars, but
they are not. My father, Nison
Gordon, zl, whom Ive written
about here from time to time,
left me a legacy of millions of
words. As a writer in Yiddish
publications from the early

I have previously written
about the very painful topic of
divorce in our community. As
the number of divorces of
young couples rises to unprece-
dented proportions, leaving dev-
astated families and at times
devastated communities in its
wake, the Torah community as a
whole has not stepped up ade-
quately to address this modern
plague in our community.
From a personal perspective,
in my first 15 years of being
blessed with the opportunity of
serving as a community rav, I
dealt with approximately ten
divorces. In my last five years, I
have dealt with approximately
ten each year. Ive often been
asked something that Ive
already been asking myself for
years: what is the common
denominator in so many
divorces today, particularly
among young people.
Until recently, Ive felt that
there really is no common

ISRAEL CORRESPONDENT
New York City Police Commissioner
Raymond Kelly visited Israel this week to
speak at the Herzliyya Conference. The
conference, held annually at the Inter-
disciplinary Center in Herzliyya, is one of
the most important political events of theyear in Israel, with influential politicians,
businessmen, journalists, and religious fig-
ures from around the world participating.
Kelly, a longtime supporter of Israel,
described the close relationship between
the NYPD and Israeli National Police. The
NYPD has had an officer assigned to Tel
Aviv as an intermediate between the two
forces since 2002. This is one of eleven
posts that the NYPD has created in cities
throughout the world in what the NYPD is
calling its international liaison program.
The liaison works in the field, accom-
panying police to crime scenes and terror
attacks as well as acting as an official con-
duit between Israelis and New Yorkers. There is also at least one former New York
City officer serving in the Israeli National
Police in the Jerusalem District. Kelly
attended the event to take part in a panel
entitled The Community Front: An inte-
grated approach to personal security.
Kelly last visited Israel in 2009, when
he accompanied Mayor Mike Bloomberg
and Queens Congressman Gary Acker-
man on a solidarity trip to Sderot to
express support for the IDFs Cast Lead
incursion into Gaza. At the time,
Bloomberg said, All Hamas has to do is
stop sending rockets over to kill people
and agree on the accords that were nego-
tiated earlier and come to an agreement
that is verifiable, durable, and effective to
stop people from being killed.
Kelly has also shown his support of
Israel in New York, attending the
American Friends of the Open University
of Israel annual dinner in March. My
presence here, I think, is a manifestation
of the special relationship that exists
between the New York City PoliceDepartment and the State of Israel, Kelly
stated. Since September 11, we knew that
we had a great deal to learn from Israel,
he added. Kelly met with his Israeli coun-
terpart, Commissioner Dudi Cohen, on
February 3. The two discussed ways in
which their forces can collaborate on
issues such as organized crime and the
proliferation of illegal weapons.
Cohen was on the same panel with
Kelly and spoke about the fight against
serious crime, public corruption, and vio-
lence in society. The Israeli commissioner
also discussed the international nature of
modern crime, saying that criminals do
not know or respect borders.New York City and Israel collaborate
on security issues beyond their police
ties. The Metropolitan College of New
Yorks Emergency and Disaster Manage-
ment graduate program includes a study
abroad component in which students are
trained in emergency management by
Israel Military Industries, one of the
Israeli armys main weapons suppliers
and innovators in hightech warfare and
disaster response.O
