thesis
The thesis is a study of how architecture can influence how a child learns and how the spaces in between, that is to say the thresholds between spaces, can be used to supplement a unique and engaging experience. While the spaces where the child learns are vital to the educational experience, the walls and transition spaces between conventional rooms are often overlooked. I propose that children can inhabit and explore this unique form of space, creating an environment that fosters interaction with classmates as well as the architecture itself. I believe that this new perspective on space and the additional intrigue created by this type of architecture will elicit an explorative and interactive learning that will greatly benefit these preschool through first grade students.

Children learn naturally through exploration of their surroundings. Discovery of new things and new skills allows children to develop themselves both intellectually and socially. They discover who they are in relationship to others and who they want to become. Those with dementia are in a constant struggle to maintain who they are at the core. In the same way that exploration allows children to develop, it may help those with dementia slow the process and maintain a sense of self. The proposed Intergenerational Activity Center will allow children and adults with dementia to build relationships and benefit from the unique situations of each other.
How can architecture create a place for exploration and discovery?

The structure is derived from natural sand dunes that emerge from the beach, while creating a transition over them. The transition one experiences, provides an overall sense of connectivity between city and beach and allowing the occupant to rest at the pavilion and experience this shift. The pathway hovers only a few feet above sand to keep people close to the dunes and form a relationship with the natural rhythm of the landscape. The alternating handrails flow with the site and light up near the base at night to provide a sense of direction without disturbing the tranquil darkness.

A truss operates by resolving the opposing forces of compression and tension within itself. This table is the integration of wood and steel to resolve downward force in the same manner as a truss. Tension in the wooden top, opposes the compression in the v-shaped legs while the thin steel rods prevent the legs from splaying.

A greenhouse is a space tailored to the needs of vegetation. The space should not only cater to this on the inside during the winter, but on the outside during every month. The glazed south façade allows plants to thrive in winter, but each panel can swing open to transform the space into an open-air garden in the summer months. Berming the north wall gives the greenhouse extensive thermal mass and protection from cold winter winds. The wall also becomes a hill where residents and visitors of Pulaski can picnic and relax before exploring the garden on the interior. The green house also serves as a barrier between downtown Pulaski and the scenic creek, creating a small plaza.
