First Reading 1 Kgs 17:17-24 The son of the mistress of the house fell sick; his illness was so severe that in the end he had no breath left in him. And the woman said to Elijah, ‘What quarrel have you with me, man of God? Have you come here to bring my sins home to me and to kill my son?’ ‘Give me your son’, he said, and taking him from her lap, carried him to the upper room where he was staying and laid him on his own bed. He cried out to the Lord, ‘Lord my God, do you mean to bring grief to the widow who is looking after me by killing her son?’ He stretched himself on the child three times and cried out to the Lord, ‘Lord my God, may the soul of this child, I beg you, come into him again!’ The Lord heard the prayer of Elijah and the soul of the child returned to him again and he revived. Elijah took the child, brought him down from the up- per room into the house, and gave him to his mother. ‘Look’, Elijah said, ‘your son is alive.’ And the woman replied, ‘Now I know you are a man of God and the word of the Lord in your mouth is truth itself.’ Responsorial Psalm (R.) Second Reading Gal 1:11-19 The Good News I preached is not a human message that I was given by men, it is something that I learnt only through a revelation of Jesus Christ. You must have heard of my career as a practising Jew, how merciless I was in persecuting the Church of God, how much damage I did to it, how I stood out among other Jews of my generation, and how enthusiastic I was for the traditions of my ancestors. Then God, who had specially chosen me while I was still in my mother’s womb, called me through his grace and chose to reveal his Son in me, so that I might preach the Good News about him to the pagans. I did not stop to dis- cuss this with any human being, nor did I go up to Jerusalem to see those who were already apostles before me, but I went off to Arabia at once and later went straight back from there to Damascus. Even when after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas and stayed with him for fifteen days, I did not see any of the other apos- tles; I only saw James, the brother of the Lord. Gospel Acclamation Lk 7:16 Alleluia, alleluia! A great prophet has appeared among us; God has visited his people. Alleluia! Gospel Lk 7:11-17 Jesus went to a town called Nain, accompanied by his disciples and a great number of people. When he was near the gate of the town it happened that a dead man was being carried out for burial, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a considerable number of the townspeople were with her. When the Lord saw her he felt sorry for her. ‘Do not cry,’ he said. Then he went up and put his hand on the bier and the bearers stood still, and he said, ‘Young man, I tell you to get up’. And the dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him to his mother. Everyone was filled with awe and praised God say- ing, ‘A great prophet has appeared among us; God has visited his peo- ple.’ And this opinion of him spread throughout Judaea and all over the countryside. THINKING ABOUT TODAY’S GOSPEL Today’s Gospel about what happened in Nain begins

with a personal tragedy. At this time, the death of a wid-

ow’s only son means that her only source of livelihood ,

of food, of care, of clothes, of a home is gone. His death

meant a life of extreme poverty for the widow.

The last part of the story is the celebration of Jesus’

action and the power to give new life. Without being

asked, Jesus acts to bring to life the dead son. Jesus

responds with compassion, reminding us of God’s in-

volvement in our joys and sorrows. A compassionate

person feels another person’s pain and opens their heart

to that person’s needs. Luke’s Gospel is sometimes

known as the gospel of compassion. The compassion of

Christ is stirred by the widow whose only son has died.

This leaves her totally alone and vulnerable. The son is

restored to life so that he can care for his mother.

Having read the gospel about Jesus’ compassionate

response to the widow, What are some of the things

that move you to great compassion?

In the gospel, when the dead man sat up and began

to talk , the people were “filled with awe.” What fills

you with awe?

After this miracle, the bystanders said, “God has visi

ted his people!” How do you experience the

presence of God?

Candidates’ Corner You are invited to look at the candidates’ projects featuring their chosen Saint which are displayed in the foyer. Why not talk to a candidate about their chosen Saint? This week we are talking about our beliefs as expressed in the Creed. Copies of the Creed will be presented to the candidates during Mass symbolising the community’s handing on of our faith.

Key facts about Catholic schools

More than 765,000 students attend 1,731 Catholic schools across Australia.

With 91,000 staff in those schools, Catholic education is a sig-nificant Australian employer.

Catholic schools receive significant government funding, which covers 71 per cent of the cost of schooling, on average. Fees and private income cover the rest.

Government funding for Catholic school students is 17 per cent lower than funding for government school students, on average.

Catholic schools are welcoming and inclusive communities, with the number of students with disability and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students doubling over the past decade.

Almost one-third of students in Catholic schools are non-Catholic.

Footy Points Margin The winners of round 3 (61 points) have been found, they are Adria-na and Beres Taylor. But we are still looking for the winners of round 5 (3 points), round 8 (26 points) round 9 (14 points) and round 10 (26 points). 26 seems to be a lucky number!

Confirmation Friday 24 June When our Confirmation candidates were baptised we promised as a community to welcome and support them and their par-ents. Since that time they have been growing in their awareness of the Holy Spirit working in their lives and over the

past weeks have been preparing in a special way to cele-brate the sacrament of Confirmation. All of us as a faith community are invited to welcome and share with them as they are sealed with the Holy Spirit at 7.00pm on Friday 24 June at St. John’s.

Why We Do The Things We Do

Why do we have ‘ordinary’ Sundays?

In between all the special festive occasions that occur in the life of a family there are many

days which we might call ‘ordinary’. Filled with daily rituals - preparing meals, fronting up for

work, dropping the kids at footy practice - they are an essential dimension of family life. Our

Church calendar, too, has periods called Sundays in Ordinary Time or Sundays of the Year

which are numbered consecutively. In between all the ‘special occasions’ (the various

Christian feasts and seasons) they are the sustaining celebrations of our life together as a

faith family.

Talk on the challenge of fatherhood today

"The Challenge of Fatherhood Today" - an afternoon for all fathers and grandfathers: On

Saturday 25th June, Robert Falzon, (author and co-founder of menALIVE), will be in Hobart

to speak on the critical importance of fathering. The afternoon will include a discussion on

the importance of fathers and grandfathers, and some practical insights and information on

Intentional Fathering. The session will start at 1 pm at the Murphy Room, Catholic Diocesan

Centre, 35 Tower Rd, New Town. For more info phone Martin Stone on 6223 8132.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

Two ferry captains on Sydney Harbour, who had been friends for years,

passed each other every morning. If all was well, each man would wave, yell

“Aye!” and blow his whistle in a friendly salute. One day, a novice crewman

asked the mate, “Why do they do that?” “You mean,” replied the startled

mate, “you’ve never heard of an aye for aye and a toot for a toot?”
