ST. MARK THE EVANGELIST R.C.
Parish Mission Statement: We are a family-centered Catholic Christian faith community journeying together toward a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ our Savior. We do this through: worship and prayer, reflection on the work of God and Wisdom of the church, and fellowship and service towards others.
We are called to a hopeful vision of our parish community based on Evangelization, Outreach, and Youth Ministry. We welcome everyone into our family community who is moved to join us on our journey of modeling Christ’s love.

FAITH DIRECT…
Fall is here along with our traditional season of stewardship. However,
this year has been anything but typical, which is why we are reaching
out to our parishioners. This year people throughout our community
have turned to us for help. However, St. Mars can only continue to
meet that need with your assistance. Your valuable online donations
help us to continue our ministry to answer their call for help. We
prayerfully request that you consider signing up for eGiving from your
computer, smartphone or tablet and set up a recurring donation or
make a one-time gift. Sign up today by visiting faith.direct/NJ484.
Thank you for your continued support of our parish family.
God Bless You, Fr. Marcin
All- powerful and ever-living God the lasting health of all who believe
in you, hear us as we ask your loving help for the sick; restore their
health, that they may again offer joyful thanks in your church.

My Dear Parishioners,
We celebrate the
Lord’s Day on this 25th Sunday
in Ordinary Time. The Parable of
the Laborers in the Vineyard
means different things to
different people. I like to see the
parable of the Laborers in the
Vineyard as Jesus teaching us
about being called by God and staying close to God when called.
Whether we receive the call to work in God’s vineyard later in the day
because of drama in our lives, or received it early in the day, we are all
alike in need of reflecting on the love of God so that we can fruitfully
serve the loving God who called us.
In this parable we see the extraordinary generosity and
compassion of God. There is great tragedy in unemployment, the loss
of work, and the inability to earn enough to live and support oneself or
one’s family. In Jesus’ times laborers had to wait each day in the
marketplace until someone hired them for
a day's job. No work that day usually meant no food on the family table.
The laborers who worked all day and received their payment complain
that the master pays the late afternoon laborers the same wage. The
master, hired them in the late afternoon so they wouldn’t go home
payless and hungry.
If you feel that life has been
unfair to you, the Bible has
much to teach us to heal our
attitudes. In many places the
Bible teaches us that we are
to give thanks to God at all
times in all circumstances. In
Eph 5:20 we read, “Always and everywhere give thanks to God who is
our Father.” In 1 Thes 5:16-18 we read, “Be happy at all times; pray
constantly and for all things give thanks to God, because this is what
God expects you to do in Christ Jesus.” In Col 3:17 we read, “Whatever
you say or do, let it be in the name of the Lord Jesus, in thanksgiving to
God the Father through him.” So even when others prosper or have
more success or better chances, what can we do? We can give thanks
to God for the blessings he has given to them and the blessings he has
given to us.
If others have more than you, it does not mean that God loves
you less. God loves each of us specially. In the parable, the landowner -
representing God - said, “My friend, I am not being unjust to you.” God
is our friend and is not unjust to us. God deals differently with each of
us because God loves each of us in the way that God knows best for us
and his kingdom.
God is generous in opening the doors of his kingdom to all
who will enter, both those who have labored a life-time for him and
those who come at the last hour. The Lord Jesus calls each one of us to
serve God and his kingdom with joy and zeal and to serve our neighbor
with a generous spirit as well. The Lord Jesus wants to fill each one of
us with the power and strength of the Holy Spirit so we can bear great
fruit for God's kingdom (the fruit of peace, joy, righteousness, and love)
and also bring the fruit of his kingdom to our neighbor as well. We labor
for the Lord to bring him praise, honor, and glory. And we labor for our
neighbor for their welfare with the same spirit of loving-kindness and
compassion which the Lord has shown to us. Paul the Apostle reminds
us, “Whatever your task, work heartily, as serving the Lord and not
others, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as
your reward - you are serving the Lord Christ” (Colossians 3:23-24).
Do you perform your daily tasks and responsibilities with
cheerfulness and diligence for the Lord’s sake? And do you give
generously to others, especially to those in need of your care and
support?
CATCHETICAL SUNDAY, SPETEMBER 20TH 2020
This year, the Church will celebrate Catechetical Sunday on September
20, 2020. The 2020 theme is I received from the Lord what I also
handed on to you. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to
reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in
handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical
Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission
as a community of faith.
The 2020 Catechetical Sunday theme is taken from St. Paul’s first letter
to the Corinthians, “I RECEIVED FROM THE LORD WHAT I ALSO
HANDED ON TO YOU.” This theme focuses on the essential work of
catechesis, which is an invitation to a whole new life given by Christ
Himself. It emphasizes that living faith necessitates movement,
inspiring all those who hear the Word to share it as witnesses of the
true and living God.
This year, we also invite everyone who is involved in the work of
catechesis to consider earnestly the importance of catechist formation.
Since catechists are the instruments through which many come to
encounter Christ and hear this invitation, they have a unique role in
keeping people connected to the life of the parish.
Rooted in and nourished by our encounter with Christ in the Eucharist,
this beautiful ministry of the Church’s catechetical and evangelizing
mission helps to further actualize the Body of Christ in our world. May
our lives be instruments of faith, which we have “received from the Lord
[and…] handed on to you”!
PRAYER FOR CATECHISTS
O God, our Heavenly Father, you have given us the gift of these
catechists to be heralds of the Gospel to our parish family. We lift them
up to you in thanksgiving and intercede for them concerning their hopes
and needs. May we be attentive to the presence of your Word in them,
a Word that lifts up and affirms, calls forth and challenges, is
compassionate and consoles. We pray that our parish family will always
be blessed with those who have responded to the call to share in
-
Christ’s prophetic mission as catechists. May we too be open to the
universal call to service that Christ addresses to all of his disciples,
contributing our gifts to the communion of faith, the Church. We ask
this in Jesus’ name. AMEN
ST. MARK’S NEED YOUR HELP
These past months have been difficult times for all of us as we
continue to deal with the pandemic which has changed so many things
in our world. Much of what we were accustomed to has either been
reduced or vanished all together.
Every pastor is entrusted with the care of
souls and the material possessions of the
parish. This time of pandemic has been
especially difficult for churches who strive to keep the spiritual life of
the community functioning in light of restrictions. The uncertainty of
our current state is causing many to fear. Our attendance at divine
worship is 40% of where it was in March. Just about all of our parish
activities have ceased. All of this has caused another major difficulty
for us regarding our finances. This situation can make me fearful but I
am keeping my eyes on Jesus, the Savior of our souls. I am sure that
He will assist us and raise up generosity in the hearts of our
parishioners. I know that the Lord will richly bless those who give with
joy to Christ’s Church and that He will indeed bless them richly for
their willingness to give. I write to you, my good people, asking that
you be ever mindful of the importance of your regular and generous
offering to our Lord. Our parish depends solely on your commitment
to St. Mark’s. I have witnessed the love you hold in your hearts for
our parish and I am confident that this love will bring about the
increase in generosity which is so very much needed during this time.
“I HUMBLY ASK YOU TO MAKE AN ADDITIONAL ONE TIME DONATION
TO HELP US LOWER OUR DEFICIT AND REMAIN FINANCIALLY STABLE.”
FROM FATHER JAYKE,
Public and Private Revelation
The word revelation comes from the Latin word “revelare,” which
means to unveil or disclose. But, in theology, the word revelation
denotes the action by which God communicates to creatures a
participation in His own knowledge, including His intimate self-
knowledge. Revelation can be divided into two types: public revelation
and private revelation. Public revelation is a divine revelation that
consists of God’s self-manifestation of divine truths for the salvation of
mankind, wherein it is protected by the Holy Spirit, is given to the
prophets and apostles, and end with the death of the Apostle John. This
type of revelation is transmitted through the Sacred Scripture and the
Apostolic Tradition, wherein they are safeguarded by the Magisterium
of the Church to constitute the deposit of Christian faith entrusted to
the Church.
On the other hand, private revelation is a type of revelation that
constitutes a manifestation of divine truth given to an individual for the
spiritual benefit of the person, a particular group, or for the universal
benefit of the Church and the world (Dei Verbum nn. 9-10). The purpose
of private revelation is to “assist people in the ongoing Christian
challenge to incorporate more authentically and more generously the
Gospel call of Jesus Christ to Christian faith, hope, and love – to guide
us in the fullest possible implementation of what has already been
revealed in Scripture and Tradition for the perfection of love in Christian
holiness (Lumen Gentium, n. 11
Visions and Apparitions
Sometimes, the word revelation is often used interchangeably with
apparition and vision. But, according to my Mariology professor, these
three have slightly different meanings. For him, a revelation can refer
to the illumination as intended by God, the giver and revealer of the
illumination. An apparition is the illumination seen from the perspective
of the person who receives it. And lastly, a vision includes both the
illumination of t apparition and an understanding that can accompany
the illumination. There are three categories of visions and these are:
Imaginative, Intellectual, and Corporeal. Imaginative vision is a vision
that is perceived by the imaginative sense. This means that this category
of vision has a sensible representation of an object by the act of
imagination alone, without the aid of visual organ. While Intellectual
vision is a type of vision that perceives the object without a sensible
image. This means that the “illumination is given to the intellect without
any dependence on sense images or external senses.
Lastly, the Corporeal vision is a vision perceived by the external senses
of the eyes and it may take place in two ways: a) it is either a figure
really present strikes the retina and there determines the physical
phenomenon of the vision; or b) an agent superior to man directly
modifies the visual organ and produces in the composite a sensation
equivalent to that which an external object would produce. Moreover,
corporeal vision is also called an apparition, wherein it could cause
directly by God or mediately through an angelic power. However, this
type of vision could also be caused by the devil.
We dry the mourners tear,
The tired heart we cheer,
Faith in our works appear,
Upheld by love.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING ST. MARK’S CHRISTIAN EDUCATION FOR 2020/21
St. Mark’s Christian Education will be provided on-line this year, for the most part. Occasionally,
grades may have on or off-site gatherings throughout the year, as weather and COVID 19
permit (TBA). When we do ask students to join us, it will be with all social distancing measures
in place. No one will be required to attend these gatherings, if parents are uncomfortable with
the details. All lessons may be accessed through our website www.stmarksnj.org, which will be
password accessible for registered families. Only registered families will receive the necessary
credit for the Christian Education year. Active participation will be monitored, so that we may
know you are getting the most out of the program. For families who have no children in the
program, who may be empty nesters, or have not begun their families, yet. You may feel free to
access the program without registration, as you will not need to receive credit for the Christian
Education year. What a great way for grandma & grandpa, aunts and uncles and future
Confirmation sponsors to learn right along with us! You should contact us to let us know if this
is the case.
Our program is intended as Family Catechesis. For the past two years, St. Mark’s has held
Family Faith Formation classes for families who chose to participate as their Christian Education
option. The program has been very well-received and successful. Due to the COVID 19
pandemic, it is a natural progression for us to offer Family Faith Formation online, so that
families may feel protected while they grow in their Catholic Faith. You may download the
Registration Form on www.stmarksnj.org, and pay on Faith Direct. Completed and paid-for
forms should be sent to St. Mark’s. There will be a designated box to receive forms, for those
who wish to drop them off at the church. The program will be largely based on the encyclical
written by Pope Francis entitled Laudato Si’ or Praise Be to You, On Care for Our Common
Home. Our focus, at this very tumultuous time in our history, will be on caring for our common
home – our planet, our neighbors, our families, each other and those who suffer, whom we
may have never met. In addition, we will learn about the tenets of our Catholic Faith, our
Saints, prayer, outreach, special projects, the workings of our Church today, and of course; a
large emphasis will be on weekly Mass (understanding it and embracing it as we apply the
Gospel message to our daily lives). Weekly Mass attendance will continue to remain the central
and most essential piece of our program.
Not a St. Mark’s parishioner? No problem. If you register and pay for the classes on-line, and
complete them successfully, you will have completed your child(rens) grade-appropriate year of
Christian Education…and will have done so as a family!
We pray for all families that soon, days will become more comfortable and not so worrisome.
Until then, we will ride the wave of the future, and try to help you as best we can. One thing
has not changed – we need our Catholic Faith more than ever. We are happy to provide this
wonderful opportunity for everyone, and are working diligently to deliver a great program for
all. Wishing you all of God’s blessings, and peace today and in days to come! Susan A. Reilly,
DRE
