Rome.
Early Works
• Bucolics
- “on care of cattle”
- tells of revolutionary change in Rome during Republic
• Georgics
- about farming and rural life
Augustus
• First Roman emperor• Wanted to unite Rome
with an epic that displayed national pride.
• Believed he was descendant of Aeneas, who is also the son of the goddess, Venus.
• Commissioned Virgil to write the great Roman epic.
Writing of the Aeneid
• Took 10 years to write
• 12 books
• First 6 books: modeled after Odyssey (journey)
• Last 6 books: modeled after Iliad (war epic)
• Tells the story of Aeneas from the end of the Trojan War to his founding of the Roman race in Italy.
