3D CNC ROUTER

No longer will your design process be flat drawing lines, now you will model your design. You

build up the design using different 3D shapes and with the right program this actual model will

reflect over onto the tool path. This means that what you were previously used to, will no longer

be with the 3D CNC router.

Clip Art/Models

If you don’t do enough 3D projects to justify the cost of the 3D modeling software, you do not

have to worry about it. There are companies who offer 3D clip art that can be used with the 3D

CNC router. If you do not use the software program enough, your proficiency level as an artist

will not be high. The 3D clipart option could be the best option for you.

Purchasing 3D models via the web may not be best. Usually these models have been developed

for other uses such as video, etc. They are not developed explicitly for cutting; however, you can

purchase 3D models that are specifically designed for cutting and this would be the right option

for you. So, when considering purchasing 3D models instead of developing your own, make sure

that you purchase the right ones. The resolution quality will be better and they will allow you to

change the scale of the model, if needed.

CNC PLASMA PLANS

There are many different CNC plasma plans and kits that are available on the market. If you are

CNC ROUTER SPINDLE

When it comes to CNC router machines, there are several different CNC router spindle options

that are available. One brand may have more or different options than another brand, so make

sure that you shop around so that you are able to get the right machine for you. Having the

correct spindle is absolutely a necessity.

It is very important that you have the right spindle for high performance. The CNC router

spindles come in a variety of different horsepower and rpm performance. For example: three

horsepower manual tool change spindles for 220 volt with an RPM range of 24,000 is just one of

the many options that are available.

The weight of the CNC router spindles is also another very important feature. You want to make

sure that your machine can support the weight as some of these spindles can weigh upwards of

18 -20 pounds. You don’t want the weight to slow down the performance of the machine.

Having the right electric service to support the spindle is also very important. Most spindles

come in 220 volt options, even though they can have different RPM speeds. Depending upon

what brand of CNC router spindle that you purchase, you can plan on spending several thousand

CNC SERVO MOTORS

CNC servo motors must be able to provide the customers with the highest possible performance

standards and with the best quality while still being reliable. Because of the type of machining

that CNC machines can perform it is essential that the motors can stand up to the performance

standards that are required.

The motors for CNC machines need to be high performance, large torque, high acceleration and

Servo motors will allow tight

tolerance CNC machining. Most

servo motors come with an encoder

that is of high quality as well and is

mounted usually on the rear shaft of the

motor. In a servo motor, the skewing of the rotor

results in low cogging makes this type of motor very suitable for high

resolution applications and precise machining capabilities.

Servo motors are usually having lower rpm ranges than large motors that are developed for the

larger CNC machines. Servo motors are best for the smaller CNC machines that require less than

5,000 rpm for operation. Regardless of the type of the CNC machine, the CNC servo motor will

work for the smaller machines. You can get the standard encoder options and some companies

even offer an encoder that is housed in a metal casing.

Just like with any other motor and performance standards for machines you probably have

several questions about the product and the performance of the product. If this is the case,

contact your dealer/supplier and they should be able to answer the questions that you have. When

trying to decide upon this type of motor or the size of the motor that is needed, it can be difficult

CNC STEPPER MOTORS

CNC stepper motors are designed to be used on mid-sized and small CNC mills and milling

machines, lathes, engravers, cutters, plasma cutters, vinyl sign cutters, foam cutters and many

more. Stepper motors are used in other things besides CNC machines, like robots. These motors

offer advanced torque curves as well as low inductance. These motors, because of advanced

torque curves and the low inductance that they offer, are the best choice for higher speed rapids

and close lead screw pitches.

CNC stepper motors come in basically two different forms: the unipolar motor and the bipolar

motor. The bipolar series of motors uses the full coil, which in turn gives great torque at low

speeds; however, the higher the inductance quality that is offered with the CNC stepper motors,

the more quickly torque drops off. Other bipolar motors are offered, for example, the bipolar

parallel motors which also use the full coil.

Unipolar and bipolar half coil stepper motors do not

give great torque at low speeds because

fewer turns are being used;

however, because of the low

inductance quality that is offered

with the CNC stepper motors,

the torque is held out at higher

speeds.

As with any other CNC

motor, the motor quality,

reliability and compatibility

will all depend upon the

brand that is purchased.

Different manufacturers

offer different set ups,

different options and

different configurations between their

CNC machines and the CNC stepper motors that are

designed to work with each other. You will be better off if you

purchase a CNC stepper motor that is of the same brand and that will work with

the CNC machine that you currently have or that you are looking at buying.

Different wire configurations for set up qualities are offered depending upon the manufacturer

and the type of CNC stepper motor that you are looking at. Some offer 6 leads, while others offer

less. There are diagrams that are available from the manufacturers that can help to explain the

leads and the wire configurations better.

Optimal performance standards for these motors are good compared to the size of the machines

that these stepper motors are designed to work with. When used in correlation with the proper

size of CNC machine and the proper type of CNC machine, these stepper motors may be all that

you need to achieve the desired effects with machines of this size.

Pre-wired plugs are available for the stepper motors that help to reduce the installation time by

quite a bit. You may also have to purchase a driver box to work in conjunction with the stepper

motor. The installation process with the pre-wired plugs can be as simple as plugging the right

wire to the right axis and that is it.

CNC Z AXIS

When it comes to CNC

machining, things can

become a little bit

confusing. Most CNC

machines operate on 3 axes

and those are referred to as

X, Y, and Z. Some of the

CNC machines implement

a 5-axis form of movement

where there are 2 more axes

that are used. Each axis

represents a different

motion that can be done.

For example: side-to-side

motion, up-and-down motion, etc. This is why CNC machines are capable of performing almost

any type of motion because of the combination of the axes that are used.

As mentioned previously, different axes offer different motions. With the Z axis, depth comes

into play. How deep will the machine cut, especially when formulating designs? Something has

to allow the machine to make the turns, the angles, and so forth. The robotic arm allows the

machine to do this.

The different axes will allow the machine to do different things. The more axes that the machine

operates on, the more creative you can be. The more diverse the parts or projects can become.

With the five axis machines, pretty much anything that anyone can dream up, can be created.

You can even sculpt a model of a human head.

Computer numerical controlled technology combined with robotic technology is a wonderful

thing. Without either the machining industry would not be where it is today. CNC machining is a

large part of the automotive industry, the aerospace industry, and others. These machines offer

engineers and machinists the ability to create anything needed to make the world operate

efficiently.

Having different axes to work with, machinists can create parts with precision and high

tolerances. Precise angles and precise cuts can be created within 1 to 100 microns, in most cases.

It can’t get much better than that. No longer do machinists have to turn cranks and handles and

manually operate these machines. The software programs control pretty much everything that

has to do with the machine.

The computer software programs have to be written by the programmers to incorporate the

different axes. This means that the programmer has to tell each axis what to do in the program.

On a five-axis CNC machine, one does not have to use all of the axes. The programmer can write

the program to use the three basic axes and that’s all. The programmer specifically writes the

program to tell the X axis its job, the Y axis its job, the Z axis its job, and so on. If one axis is

accidently left out, that axis will not work.

The CNC Z axis is very important to the CNC machines. Without this axis, depth cannot be

created. Many projects, from woodworking to auto part making, require the use of the Z axis. If

The desktop/tabletop CNC router is a smaller version of the CNC routers that are available to

larger corporations. This handy sized machine is perfect for any hobby shop, small machine

shop, furniture makers, etc. It incorporates the same type of computer numeric controlled

technology that the larger machines have.

If you already know CNC technology, computers, and graphics, then operating this machine to

its designed capabilities will be no problem. You may even be able to push the machine past its

these areas, do not worry. The interface that is used is easy for learning and for operation. You

may not be able to take advantage of the machine’s capabilities fully; however, that will all come

with time. The more you use it, the more you will learn and in the end you will know your

machine inside and out. Then, you will be able to basically create anything that you want.

Just like with the larger CNC machines, these machines still operate on several different axes.

There are usually the basic 3 axes that are used: the X, Y and Z axis. This technology allows you

to even create 3D images and sculptures. You can truly develop and create anything that you can

think of with this machine.

These machines are designed for smaller projects and short run times. Do not expect to turn out

large production lines of products; That is just not within the machine’s capabilities. Small, short

projects are more like it.

To find the machine that it is right for you, you will want to shop around. There are different

sizes and different options available. You must have in mind what you intend to use the machine

for and then you have to make sure that the motor, rpm speed, and so on will allow you to

perform your job accurately. These machines are affordable, but you don’t want to waste your

money purchasing the wrong machine.

DIY CNC FOAM CUTTER

plans that you find. Shop around, locate several. Then, look at them closely and determine which

one will work best for you. Narrow them down until you have the one that will work exactly to

meet your needs or the one that you can make slight modifications to so that it will work exactly

to meet your needs.

Get determined and stay focused on the project at hand. Many times, people plan to do things

and it never gets past the planning stage. Eventually, you will get to the point in the project when

you will be able to see the end. At this point, it will become very exciting and then you will not

be able to wait to get it finished. When you do finally finish it, not only will you have created a

machine that incorporates high tech technology of computer numeric control and robotics, you

will have a great sense of accomplished and a large amount of pride.

RACK AND PINION CNC

Rack and Pinion in CNC technology usually refers to a CNC router and its design. The rack and

pinion design is one of the most common and least expensive drives that are available on the

market today. It generates linear motion from rotary motion. Obviously, rack and pinions are

noted for their simplicity and inexpensiveness.

Even though the cost efficiency and simple design of the rack and pinion makes it desirable for

many, it does have its limitations. Those limitations include:

The rack and pinion design requires that the motor turn over at a high speed in order to

generate enough power to drive the rack and pinion.

It takes a lot of the motor power in the system to overcome the friction that is caused by

the gear box that drives the apparatus which is only 75% efficient.

All of the friction that is created obviously causes wear and tear on any machine and its

parts. In this case, the friction not only causes wear of the machine but also it affects the

systems speed by lowering it, it affects the acceleration of the machine and of course, all

of that will affect the accuracy of the machine.

Making adjustments usually cause other problems. Tightening of the system causes more

friction and as stated above the performance level is lowered by doing so. Loosening of

the system only creates more “backlash”.

The rack is the long bar piece that has gear teeth cut into it. The pinion is actually what is called

a pinion gear. The gear turns and as it rolls the teeth in the gear catches the teeth in the rack

causing the pinion to roll up and down the rack. You can see how important this type of drive

can be in any computer numeric controlled machine where several different axes are used and

things are constantly sliding and turning in order for the machine to do its job properly.

Rack and pinion drives for CNC machines are used on a wide basis. Even though there may be

limitations to this type of drive, other factors of the mechanics of the machine can be looked at in

order to help out with the backlash or the wear on the gears. If may be that in some instances

you will have to replace the rack and pinion drives. This then falls under maintenance of the

machine.

You cannot expect to use a machine on a daily basis and with many of the CNC routers and other

machines, they are used in production lines and manufacturing plants. So, the machines are

definitely being used on a daily basis and during each day of operation, they are being ran, more

than likely, to maximum performance. With this type of machining, wear and tear is just a

normal aspect and will have to be dealt with. If that means having to replace a rack and pinion

drive every so many years, that’s still better than having to replace the entire machine.
