Main Coverline ‘”THEY THINK IM A BIT OF A WEIRDO “ Calvin Harris a crash course in dance superstardom is also a pull quote and ironically will draw the reader in because the quote has still left “they” unnamed . General information: The genre of this magazine is dance music. I know this from taking further research into “Mixmag” magazines. Its first date of publication was 1st february 1983 and it is still in production. MixMag is owned by Development Hell Ltd and does have a website. Contents- All the stories have the same ideology as it is all talking about summer and this can then tell us about the audience that they are party people and are interested about clubbing and holidays destinations for partying .

Central image: this is an image of a young woman laying on a Lillo. Her bikini fits in with the colour scheme and sets the mood for partying. The position of her body tells the audience that she looks like a party goer and this is emphasised by her wearing sunglasses . The ideology of the central image being sold here is quite clear. Loves partying and hot weather, this brings out a very lively and young sort of lifestyle. Representation- the magazine presents themselves as “the worlds biggest dance music and clubbing magazine” and this reflects on the central image.

Masthead: the masthead in contrast to the previous one are very similar due to the fact that they both indicate youthfulness and are very bright and colour co ordinated.

Main Coverline: “ Cut price Ibiza! Drink cheap dance for free eat only when essential” this is The main Coverline due to its font size , colour and positioning of it on the page. this is also a puff because it is boosting the magazines image by using the words “cut price, Drink cheap, dance for free! Eat only when essential! This would appeal to the consumer due to the lifestyle it projects.

Fonts: There are about 4-5 different types of font used on this front cover. The colour co-ordination with the fonts remain the same, the colour they chose reflects youthfulness and it matches the colour of the bikini .

Other Coverlines: all the other coverlines located on the right and bottom left hand side of the front cover are there to drag the audience in even more by saying things like “blag the guest list, affordable beach wear, a week of madness for £200” these are all in bright and bold colours to suggest that they are of some importance and that Ibiza is the place to be for a cheap and cheerful holiday. Those coverlines are aimed highly at people aged 18-26, people like students who may not have heaps of cash. Mixmag are emphasising the fact that their magazine provides all their needs. Which then leads into the uses and gratification theory.

General information: There is no direct approach. It seems that mixmag magazine takes a different approach in which to lure their audience in. All the stories on the front cover all have one thing in common, it is all about summer and partying. This definitely suggests their image and what their trying to portray as a company.

Page 3: 555 media ting

Central image: This is a close up shot of a man, most likely a DJ. I make this assumption because within the central image, he is wearing a retro T-shirt that has Vinyl cds on it. The man on the front cover looks quite old school and retro which also reflects the magazines image and his image being portrayed by the magazine. So its like a double threat. As the concept of this magazine seems quite old school and retro i would say the audience age could differ from late teens into middle aged people. Sort of like a binary composition.

Fonts: Its all about the old school retro look with this magazine. DJ-ing has been around for years and it seems that DJ magazines keeping to its roots. There are about 4-5 different types of fonts used on the front cover and have no real typography or positioning. This could suggest its chilled approach on how they advertise to their audience. There are 5 different colours used for the fonts which also emphasises the fact of their retro approach.

Masthead: The masthead is very unique as there are none like it in that specific genre of music. The vinyl Cd above the “J” of DJ makes it even more individual and it emphasises genre. The masthead also reflects the man on the central image and colour contrasts with his shirt.

Main Coverline: “ AEROPLANE FLYING SOLO” this coverline doesn’t give of much information, im unsure if that is their approach to advertising their magazine. Loyal customers may already know what this means, perhaps it is a artist that was in a group before. But the size colour and font type suggests that it is the most important story.

Skyline: the skyline says alot about “DJ magazines, it shows that they are loyal to their customers by offering every single buyer a free CD. This is a good form of advertisement as offering anything that is free will always make more customers want to buy the magazine.

General Information: The genre of this magazine is oldschool and new school house music club music. It has a wide variety of music it can put on the magazine. It was first published on the 31st of Janruary 1991. DJ mag are owned by Thrust Company and they are still in production. Their website is located in the “D” of DJ “Djmag.com” there is no direct mode of address but there is some indirect ones “TECH SPECIAL! TECH AWARDS 2010 All the gear you need in your life.” this is shouting out to anyone who is a fan of becoming a DJ or anyone that is interested in the technology used for Djing.

Page 4: 555 media ting

Central Image: The central image is of a DJ letting go of a dove. This is a really good image in contrast with the main Coverline “BORN AGAIN” as the dove is a connotation of a new start/peace making. It is a close up low angle shot of him releasing the dove, weather or not its photo shopped the thought is there. The man on the front cover doesn’t seem like a young iconic figure and iIdon’t recognise him as a DJ , this suggests that Djmag’s audience age is marginally higher than a magazine such as mixmag which advertises more youthful things such as Ibiza and cheap drinking.

Main Coverline: “BORN AGAIN” i think this Coverline is directed at the central image and tells the readers that perhaps he was once famous disappeared then came back again, maybe he has released new songs, ( which could connect very easily to the release of the dove) or even still, come back from rehab.

Fonts: The fonts used on this front cover are consistent. Sticking with the 3 colours brings out a more relaxed front cover. The use of yellow black and white is repetitive but it works. The placement of the coverlines due to the fonts brings out the importance of some stories better than others. The three coverlines under the main one ( on the right hand side of the page) all have **** by it suggesting that they are all related to each other. The flash at the bottom of the page is also another image booster and the fact that the “WIN” is in bigger bolder font will always suggest its importance

Skyline: “Double Trouble free techno album & Dubstep mix” this skyline clearly emphasises the relationship Djmag's have with their customers, by giving away not one but two things this suggest that they are loyal to their customers. This is a very good way of advertising. I noticed that it is in white which kind of fades into the background. this could be to surprise the consumer after reading all the other coverlines.

Masthead: The masthead very much sticks with the theme of front cover, the standard red for the masthead but with a switch up on the web address. This could be because the coverlines are also in yellow. Which blends in very nicely with the whole concept. It also brings out the Flash at the bottom which also stands out as there is only two bits of red on the cover.

General information: There is no direct mode of address on this front cover and the low angle of the shot could also suggest a submissive positioning. With contrast with the dove and his hands open wide.

Page 5: 555 media ting

Masthead: this masthead is very unique for a Dubstep magazine because when Dubstep first started it was promoted as FWD>> due to its global affect on the music industry. It is very urban and looks young. This can then also suggest that this magazine is aimed at a younger audience. I know this because Dubstep only started becoming mainstream in 2004.

Central image: This central image is a medium/close up shot and reflects youthfulness, i can say this because there are three young men standing next to each other. The image has been edited a lot which also creates an urban affect. <<RWD is also a club venue and that itself reflects their image as a magazine company. The unique layout of colours and patterns make it unique. The target audience for this magazine seems to be people between the ages of 16-24.

Main Coverline: “The summer of dub. Dubstep goes global” this Coverline shows that this is the prime time for Dubstep. It has just become mainstream and this will appeal to a wide variety of people as this is a whole new genre of music.

Other Coverlines: There is a massive list of direct mode of address underneath the word “featuring:” this broad selection of artists that is named on the bottom left hand side of the page will appeal to a wide selection of the audience as there are so many to chose from. This shows that <<RWD have a wide selection of things in their magazine .There is also direct interaction on one of the two coverlines. One being a flash asking you to text your name and address to the number for a freebie and the log on to buy free music online. This wide variety of things to do will keep the audience busy and can boost the image of the magazine.

Fonts: The broad selection of fonts used on the front page emphasises their youthful approach to music and is very summery and new school retro style. There are about 6-7 different types fonts and 4 different colours, their approach on variety isn’t short.

General Information: The magazine is urban hip hop grime and dubstep based and was first published on the 1st of september 2001 and is owned by Creative media LTD. It is still in publication but sales have dropped down a lot.

Page 6: 555 media ting

Main Coverline/Article The pull quote Underneath the Title gives a clear short and informative piece of writing that ends with a rhetorical question, this makes the reader want to carry on reading due to the fact that the man is still anonymous. The Drop capital implicates where the article starts and the theme of Yellow and black goes nicely. The title and the central image also suggests that the lemon is of great importance. There seems to be three sections of the article and this is shown by the yellow strips and the bold text that indicates a slight change in topic.

Central image: The central image is only spread out on to one page which suggests its equal amount of importance to the article itself. The lemon is being used as a prop to hide this mysterious mans face. The fact that his face is covered up by a lemon gives a weird aura to what might be going on in the article., especially due to the fact that the camera is focused on the lemon.

Fonts: There are 3-4 different types of fonts used on this double page spread and they all fit in with each other. The small body copy underneath the header is in a different font type and is bigger. This could mean that the magazine wants this to be read first as a introduction into the article.

Page 7: 555 media ting

Central image/Graphic features: The central image for the big 3 is stated as No.1. this is obvious because the size of the image states that this is the top party location. The other two graphic features connect with the central image but of less importance. For each image there is a little piece of writing that could be a pull quote or anchorage that is directed at the readers to give them further knowledge of what these top 3 locations are all about. The main image shows two women dancing, one of them is smiling which is a connotation for happiness. Picture number 2 shows a man dancing with alcohol, this is symbolises rebellious and no authority which boosts the image and brings the reader in more. Could also be relatable to the readers.

Fonts: There are a good amount of different styles of fonts, different sizes to emphasise different things. The first thing to catch your eyes is “the big 3” then in chronological order downwards. Good use of colour co-ordination with the pink yellow and black. Obviously No.1 “party Masion” has the biggest image and the biggest font to represent its dominance on the double page spread. The retro approach seems to work well for this double page spread and the

Headers/coverlines: The style of layout on the header “ THE BIG 3” is very unique to Mixmag and goes with their theme. Under each smaller header there is a Coverline to boost the graphic features and informs the reader more about the location and night life it brings. There is also a small body copy for each 3 informing the reader “need to know” sort of things. However the article are too small for me to read so in contrast with that the articles could be smaller in detail and get straight to the point.

Page 8: 555 media ting

Central image/Graphic features: to start of, the image of a live performance is clear here and the artists name are on both images. The central image is of magnetic man, i can say this because the image is bigger than Deadmau5. These are two mainstream iconic artists and the images themselves are promoting both the artist, and the magazine Mixmag. There are also one other graphic features on each page which slants the story to pull the reader in even more. Short snappy information that can fill the reader up with knowledge

Main Coverlines/body copy/general information: A by line underneath the artists name is promoting the image. These are also pull quotes. “they never saw the cube coming” Deadmau5 flying wedge of power. This will instantly draw the attention of the reader to the bigger article, simply because the cube is unexplained. A similar by-line on the opposite side of the double page spread that says “dubstep’s holy trinity are here to blow your mind, and maybe your eardrums too” too anyone that is a Dubstep fan, that quote there will gain the attention of any reader. there are also two body copies, one on each side of the page stating when the two artists next performances are and when! This is very informative because if the reader missed any of these performances, they now know where to look .

Fonts: There are 4-5 different types of fonts on the double page spread, all of which explore different higher status and meaning. Obviously the artists names have to be the biggest font size as that is what the article is about. This is a visual image booster and they use of black background on yellow font brings out the second most important body copy.

Page 9: 555 media ting

Main Coverline/Header:“PLACE OF WORSHIP” this Coverline tells it all. In contrast with all the pictures which are self explanatory to anyone that is a party animal. This promotes mixmag magazines image and the Q CLUB venue tremendously. Anything that can be called a place of worship is definitely worth visiting. Especially to party goer.

Main Image/Graphic features: As you can probably tell, the images are the highlight of this article, they express how this is the place of worship, the different types of shots for example the bug eye lense on the top left adds the dramatic effect of how big the venue is and how many people are there. The blured image at the bottom left suggests that the photographer is also having a good time, i can say this because in every other graphic feature, people are dancing and smiling. The two smallest graphic features contrast with the header to make it look more presentable and appealing to the reader.

Body copy: “legendary Birmingham venue Q club has closed its doors for the last time, we were there for the last ever service in the UK’s church of techno” What stands out for me with a huger significance is that they have referred it to the church of techno which implies its greatness and sums up the atmosphere . A great quote “ we were there for the last ever service in the UK’s church of techno. This would appeal to any reader who loves partying as it emphasises their point in the images and in the header.

Fonts: There are only 3 types of fonts on this double page spread which leads me onto thinking that its all about the images rather than the content or style of font to lure the reader in.

Page 10: 555 media ting

Coverline: The coverline is big and broad, this suggests that it holds a big importance. The highlighted name of the artists stands out nicely. Different areas of the article have different font intensities to reflect different importance, around and in the article

Central image: This image is of a man that appears to be jumping. The image could represent freedom and stress free, or the beginning of something new. The black and white contrasted image shows the boldness of the double page spread. It fits in very well with the theme. As there are no vibrant colours it sets the mood as quite tranquil . Also the graphic feature is used to keep the reader interested in the article so that they don’t loose interest. Fonts: The use of drop capital adds nice

affect to the double page spread and the consistent theme of black and white fits in well with the central image. Highlighting the artists name in pink shows his relevance in the article as the most important thing.

Pull quote: The pull quote “ IN SIO PAULO WE WERE ASKED TO HAND OVER OUR WATCHES AT GUNPOINT” this is very dramatic so therefore will bring the reader into the article.

Page 11: 555 media ting

Main image/graphic features: The Central image doesn’t give much information away at all so it gives the reader a teaser, just a picture of a man drinking beer. Its like psychological profiling, if your that type of person, then the reader would flick to page 66. there are two other graphic features that have a small slanting story which doesnt give much for the reader to go on, but as they are featured as the main coverlines they’re probably worth reading about. They are also all fitted in perfectly so that they are easy on they eyes.

Fonts: Mixmag have their own style of fonts as it appears. Very retro and unique. The black on yellow goes nicely for the “contents” bit. And it can also blend in with the graphic feature on the bottom right. With the yellow background. Again they have stuck to their pink against white canvas, some fonts bigger than others. This can suggest the importance of the Coverline and also the texture of the fonts can also bring that effect. This also reflects the age audience for the magazine as the fonts are retro and out there. This will have a positive outcome on the reader

Coverlines: The structure of the coverlines seem to be set out in an orderly way, the title for each Coverline is bolder than the Coverline itself, this is just to summarise it so that the reader can have a better understanding of what they are about to read.

Page 12: 555 media ting

Central image/graphic features: For Djmag's there approach on their contents page is slightly different, although there near enough on the same genre of music. Their audience age range is a lot higher than that of Mixmag. The images are a lot more abstract but more mature so this could appeal to a young and older generation of readers. The graphic feature on the bottom right sticks out mainly because its not in the format of any of the other images. This is used to promote their technology and their image as a Dj magazine.

Fonts: The use of abstract retro colours brings out different coverlines and makes them more appealing to read. They haven't really stuck to any colour shceme which makes their approach unique. There are about 5-6 different fonts and about 3 different sizes. The biggest size represents the highest importance in the contents page. The faded Grey used for one section of the page adds to affect. As does the “contents” header.

Coverlines: There are 5 Main coverlines on this page, all highlighted in different colours. They are all vibrant colours which helps set the mood of what the coverlines may be. The structure of all the coverlines are the same. Like i said bigger bolder fonts indicate higher important stories. And the titles are very easy to read and it isn’t boring.

Page 13: 555 media ting

Central Image/Graphic features: The central image is the biggest image and this shows the most importance to the contents page. It shows a close up of a young man who is looking directly at the camera. This could then suggest that he is some form of icon, especially to the women audience. The image could then promote itself by getting more female attention therefore more readers. The graphic features together make the width of the central image which makes the page look professional and presentable

Fonts: Mixmag will always stick to their retro outlook with their fonts. It works and the white on black canvas brings out the images and makes it look more youthful. The italic fonts create a smart and well structured look for the contents page. And isn’t too in your face with the amount of fonts and font sizes.

Coverlines: The coverlines all share the same amount of importance but one stands out more than any other. And thats the bottom one. The title “ Dont stay in” is shouting out to the readers saying look what we have to offer, come out and enjoy what were doing.
