YOU ARE INVITED TO JOURNEY AROUND THE WORLD AND DEEP

INTO OUR FAITH THROUGH THE EPIC SERIES

CATHOLICISM Hosted by Fr. Dave

Reflecting on the Word from this past Sunday which was Good Shepherd Sunday, in the Gospel according to John we heard Jesus say “My sheep hear my voice; I know them and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish.” (Earlier in the passage Jesus declares he is the Good Shepherd and that he lays down his life for the sheep.) Our work with the children in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd brings to life these passages. There are at least six presentations for ages three to seven years old on the Good Shepherd. The children are remarkably drawn to these passages even as early as three years old, and they indicate this to us over and over again. They do so because it captures for them - not merely what it means to

be protected, (which is a passive relationship) - but what it means to be in covenant (an active relationship in which they are partners, Cavaletti). The Good Shepherd initiates the relationship by “calling them.” They hear “his voice” and follow.

Our work here at Little Flower has seen much growth over the years; as of this month, we have three new catechists who have been certified in Level I of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd; they are Emily Kotora , (2

nd Grade teacher at St. Benedict); Kristen Honisko, (1

st

Grade teacher at St. Benedict) and Mary Jo DeRaedt, who has also answered to the call of the Good Shepherd. We are looking forward to the new life each of these catechists will bring to the youth of our parish.

As we journey further into Spring, we see new life all around us. The daffodils, crocuses, and other signs of new life have already established their presence in our yards and neighborhoods. We have experienced and celebrated joyful new life in our parish as well. Those who have been preparing for the Easter Sacraments have shared their journey of faith with us and celebrated their new life with us. With the RCIA we have welcomed new life through the Sacraments of Initiation - Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. The newly welcomed are now called “neophytes,” the new bud or new life in the Body of Christ.

What other signs of new life might there be in our faith community? Look around and you will see. With the School of Religion our efforts have extended to Haiti and our sister parish, St. Joseph in Pestel. During Lent, our young people collected change in our Change for Haiti effort ($457!). Thank you School of Religion families for helping make a difference, a difference that we pray brings hope and new life to the children and their families in Haiti.

This has most certainly been a year of change and transition, for parish, staff/leadership, for volunteers and ministries, and for every person who is part of our family of faith. Yet, the very essence of “new life” requires change and transition. We pray for our minds, our hearts and our wills to be open to what is true, beautiful and good - in the love and guidance of the Good Shepherd.

In Christ, Sue Van Hersett

Stewardship Spotlight In today’s Gospel, Jesus gives His disciples, and us, a new commandment: Love one another. Good stewards who spend their time and talents in service to others are well on their way to fulfilling this com-mandment.

Thank you to all who stopped by to learn more about our twinning relationship with St. Joseph Church and School in Pestel, Haiti, and the sewing project sponsored by the Sisters of St. Francis. Your prayers and support are appreciated! The Little Flower Haiti Committee
