DEATH TEACHES US MANY IMPORTANT LESSONS ABOUT LIFE Death can teach us many things about life. The consideration of death stands to inspire us to live with only what we need, to be detached from the things we own and use, to respect the lasting merit of good works.

Death also teaches us to make the very most of every single day. As the ancients put it, carpe diem – make the most of the present moment. Although this is a pagan saying, we can impart a Christian meaning to it by living each day with joy as if it were our whole life. It is a moment that never again will be repeated. Make the most of your time. We do not know when we will die. This very uncertainty helps us remain vigilant and watchful, like the doorkeeper awaiting the arrival of his Master (cf. Luke 12:35-42). Therefore we have to be reflective so to recognize our failings during the course of day. Have recourse to frequent Confession in order to cleanse your soul from everything in your life that is a lack of love.

An insight from the Roman stoic philosopher Seneca echoes the same truth: “it is not that we have so little time, but that we have wasted so much of it.” It is noble to desire a long life that genuinely is marked by service to God and advances to His Kingdom. Of course every one of us wants to appear before the Lord Jesus with our arms full, not empty! We rightly are to love life because it is a gift from God. So long as we are faithful to our Christian identity, when the time comes for our encounter with the Lord Jesus, we will be prepared to meet Him – indeed, we will do so eagerly and joyfully! Saint Ignatius of Loyola (d. 1556) – the founder of the Society of Jesus who commonly are called by their nickname “The Jesuits” – provides us these spirited words of encouragement; how well we all will do to consider them:

“As in one’s whole life, so also in one’s death, each one should struggle to give glory to the Lord our God. May He be honored and glorified. May other people be edified by the example of our patience and fortitude, by the testimony of our living faith, our hope and our love for the eternal goods.” Our last moments on earth should be spent for the glory and honor of God. What great delight

we will give to the Lord when we present to Him our hard labors, our volunteer giving and service to others, the joy we contributed to family life, the earnest efforts we made to overcome our own faults and failings.

Life is short. Make good use of the life we have remaining us. Leave behind works that will

endure. Or as Saint Thérèse (d. 1897), who we here know and love as the Little Flower of Jesus, chose to live each day in this way: “little things with great love.”

Stewardship Spotlight Today’s readings speak of the world’s end and the coming of the Kingdom. The bishops’ pastoral on stewardship says clearly that “’life to come’ is in

continuity with this present life through the human goods, the human purposes, which people foster now.” May our good stewardship cause us to be numbered among the chosen on the last day.

From the Diocese ...

CRHP Chatter - Solomon acknowledged the cycles of life, a time to sow and to reap, to weep and to laugh, to mourn and to dance, to gain and to lose, to keep silent and to speak, to love and to hate. To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under Heaven. Whatever our situation today, we can be thankful for God’s seasons. (ref. Eccl: 3:1-8)

As the new Little Flower Catholic Parish entrance nears completion, so does new parking and open space for arriving from Dorr Street. Although not usable yet, the parking lot has been paved and now leads almost up to the new tower entrance.

Many thanks to all who donated canned goods and food items to the Boy Scout food drive. The generous response to the St Vincent de Paul monthly collection, combined with the items that the Boy Scouts collected will enable us to provide a wonderful Thanks-giving basket for our cli-ents. We ask for many things from our parishioners and we wish to say thanks, thanks, thanks! May God bless you for assisting us in our ministry to those in need!
