MATTER Anything that has mass and takes

up space 3 states of matter: solid, liquid, gas

Mass The amount of matter in an object Measured in grams with a triple

beam balance

Properties Appearance and measurable

characteristic of matter Mass, magnetism, state of matter,

ability to conduct heat…

Solubility The ability of one substance to be

dissolved in another substance Sugar in water Lemonade powder in water

Classify To sort into groups by characteristic

or property

Magnetism A force produced by magnets that

pull metals with iron

Relative Density The measure of the amount of

matter in an object Determines if the object will sink or

float in a liquid

Physical State Matter can be classified in 3 states:

solid , liquid, or gas

Thermal Energy The energy of moving particles

Conductor Objects that allow energy to flow

through them Examples: copper, aluminum, iron

Insulator Do not conduct energy well Cloth, wood, rubber, glass, plastic

Hypothesis An educated guess made in order

to test its consequences

Conclusion The end of an experiment
