We will recognize him at the North Texas game on September 21st along with the reunion teams of 2003, 1993, 1988, 1973, 1963, 1953, and 1943. Now for our changes in the operation of the Lettermen’s Club on game day. Hours of operation will be 2 hours before kick-off and all will need to exit by 10 minutes after kick-off. The Lettermen’s Club will reopen for our usage during the 4th quarter. Frostbite GolfTournament

The Annual Frostbite Golf Tournament will be held at the Jekyll Island Club Hotel. This is the same place that it has been held in the past. It is a fabulous property. The dates are February 5-8, 2014. The cost is $223.00 per day. This includes meals, tips, taxes, golf, everything as well as a great hospitality room with your favorite beverages. There are other properties for less if so desired and for those who are on a fi xed income.

Hall of Fames We are pleased to announce that several of our Football Lettermen have been inducted into their hometown Hall of Fame. Congratulations to all of these men on this honor!!

Athens Athletic Hall of Fame Congratulations to Ed Allen (1968-69) and Francis Malinowski (1951-52-53) who were inducted into the Class of 2013. The Athens Athletic Hall of Fame ceremony took place on May 20, 2013 at the Athens Holiday Inn.

Macon Sports Hall of Fame On May 16, 2013, Mark Farriba (1977) and Al Pollard (1974-76) were inducted into the Macon Sports Hall of Fame at the Macon Coliseum. Congratulations Mark and Al on this great accomplishment!

Fannin County Sports Hall of Fame Congratulations to Carlton Guthrie (1961-63) who was inducted into the Fannin County Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday, April 13, 2013. There were 12 inductees at the inaugural banquet.

Fayette County Hall of Fame On June 22, 2013, Don Soberdash (1957-59) will be inducted into the Fayette County Hall of Fame at Penn State Fayette, The Elberly Campus. Congratulations Don on this achievement!

Georgia Sports Hall of Fame Congratulations to Buck Belue (1978-81) who was inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame on February 23, 2013 at the Macon City Auditorium.

TL Hanna High School Athletics Hall of Fame The TL Hanna High School Athletics Hall of Fame committee announced that it had added four members to the Class of 2013, according to the Anderson Independent. Among the four are Pat McShea and Ken Helms, two former Bulldogs. Helms played football, basketball, and baseball from 1970 to 1973 at Hanna, earning nine varsity letters. McShea earned six varsity letters as a linebacker and pitcher in baseball from 1974 to 1977. Both were three year lettermen at UGA. Helms played on the ‘76 SEC Champs, and McShea was a starter on the 1980 National Champions. The two players will be inducted on August 30 as part of activities surrounding the season opening football game between the Yellow Jackets and the Westside Rams.

Miller County High School Sports Hall of Fame Selma Calloway (1994-97) was inducted into the Miller County High School Sports Hall of Fame on May 21, 2013. It has been 20 years since Calloway graduated and he said that to be able to speak on his personal experiences from a youth in Colquitt, GA to his time at UGA was definitely an honor.

Game Ball Relay Below are pictures of several lettermen carrying the game ball at Piedmont and Peachtree last August. The game ball travelled from Shepherd Spinal Hospital in Atlanta to Athens and was delivered to Sanford Stadium on September 1st just before kickoff of the UGA vs. Buffalo football game.

The heart and attitude of a Lee Daniel

It’s players like Lee Daniel who prolong certain clichés in sportwriting and preserve the traditional banquet talks by coaches who like to refer to their unsung heroes, the men who often provide championship cohesion, but never gain the headlines. He’s the dedicated, 100 percenter on every play, the determined, unselfish, hardworking, conscientious team man who puts the cause and his teammates first. He’s a leader, proponent of the second effort. He never lets up. He’s a winner. He’s a joy to coach. What all coaches want to do is take the heart and attitude of the Lee Daniels and transplant them into every player on the squad, especially those with talent, but who never seem to measure up to expectations. “We’d like to have 22 men just like him,” they’ll say. After the coaches evaluate and appraise a Daniel, they most often report that he’s not good enough for the competition, but he keeps working at this job until he wins it, and when he graduates, they begin to lament his departure. The athlete with his attitude often proves his individual effectiveness on a game-by-game basis, but the bonus is his ability to lead if, by no other means, the example itself. Yet, coaches try extra hard not to let themselves get trapped into recruiting athletes with the size and ability of a Daniel, and they would snicker at you if you told them that he would someday wind up starting at defensive tackle for a Southeastern Conference championship team. The Lee Daniel-University of Georgia is not unique. It has happened before and is one of the reasons sports offer exceptional opportunity in the best American tradition. If you are good enough, you get to play. A better than average high school player for Coach Wayman Creel at Northside High in Atlanta, Lee was considered for a scholarship by Georgia and a couple of other Southeastern Conference schools. Although he was not very big (185) for a defensive end, he showed the scouts that he could get the job done at his position. The summer and fall of 1964 were not the best days of his life, since he developed mononucleosis. He got over the illness only a few days before fall football practice began, and he played his senior year in a weakened and tired condition. “It was the only time in my life when I really didn’t enjoy football.” he recalls. “When I was sick, I had to stay in bed most of the summer, and I tried to play football when I was out of shape. You just can’t do your best when you are not in top condition and I began to have my doubts about myself and whether I really wanted to try to play college football. I told the Georgia coaches I wasn’t sure I wanted to play.” “Coach Russell, who really impressed me and my family from the start, finally told me that he’d like for me to consider coming to Georgia on my own and give it a try. And then if I did well, that I’d get a scholarship later.” In the summer of 1965, he regained his strength, got a mental lift as a result and changed his mind about college football. His spirit returned with the regaining of strength and weight. He knew that Georgia was going to have a great freshman team, and he had made up his mind that he was going to Georgia anyway. He became a starting right end on defense for the Bullpups and got his scholarship the following fall, which was to be a redshirt year. “In the spring, I got discouraged because Georgia had Larry Kohn, Gary Adams, Jerry Varnado, and Marvin Tootle at ends. They worked us pretty hard and had in mind, I’m sure, that the younger players needed to learn as much football as possible for the future. I had my doubts again, but knew that I had to stick it out, and I’ve sure been rewarded since that time.” As a sophomore, in 1967, he played enough to letter and was to be a starting end when the Bulldogs opened with Tennessee in Knoxville. As two-a-day drills began, Georgia lost starting tackle Jiggy Smaha due to ineligibility, and his replacement, Dennis Watson, went down with a knee injury a few days later. Daniel was shifted to tackle, where he has remained, although he often becomes an end when the Bulldogs drop off an end from their six man defensive front for passing situations. “We’ve been saying for two years that Lee is not big enough, at 192 pounds, to play defensive tackle in the SEC,” says Erkine Russell, assistant head coach and defensive chief. “He has good speed and quickness and wants to play the position. He is intelligent and he works at football. He studies film more than the average player, and he tries to learn what his opponent does. If he didn’t apply himself that way, he would never make it. Still, we do everything we can to keep him from being mismatched against some of those 250 pounders.” Being small doesn’t bother Daniel that much. “I guess if I stopped and realized how big they are sometimes, that I’d get too frightened to play. You have a lot of stunting assignments on defense now, and I try to keep moving to keep the offensive player from getting a good shot at me. I always hope that I might be quicker than they are and expect them to get tired of carrying all that weight in the fourth quarter.”

For several years, Lee tried to gain weight to give him more equality on the football field, but it never worked. “In high school I got on one of those high protein diets and milkshakes but it didn’t even help me any,’ he explains. “Even though I wanted to gain weight, I worry about myself if I gain a few pounds. Once at Georgia, I got up to about 202 pounds and felt that I was fat and didn’t think that I could carry the weight, so I had to lose those extra pounds.” That he has become a regular on a championship team and participated in two bowl games is more than Lee expected, although he never set any goals. “All along, I felt that Georgia had a tremendous program, and I could see the great transition in 1964. I always wanted to go to school here.” Daniel says what coaches like to hear when he talks about the value of football. “It teaches you to get back up. The biggest thing is the association you have with the many fine people in football, and I feel that we have the finest people there are associated with our program at Georgia. We’ve learned the value of pulling together and appreciating the things coaches talk about like sacrifice, hard work, and dedication.” If you get to know Lee Daniel, you appreciate those worn out clichés. His motivation and that of the coaches are identical- teamwork and winning.

2005: Ryan Stone and his wife, Blair, welcomed the birth of their second daughter on February 13, 2013. Blakely Hamilton Stone was born weighing 8 lbs. and 13 oz. and was 20.25 inches long. Blakely’s maternal grandparents are Whit and Toni Hamilton of Gainesville, GA and her paternal grandparents are Craig (79-81) and Jennifer Stone of Loganville, GA. Blakely attended her first UGA game in the womb in the 2012 defeat of the Florida Gators. Ryan and Blair are blessed to have a healthy girl and the state of Florida is blessed to have another Bulldawg in its population. His name is Preston Harris Hines II and is named after Hap’s father (his grandfather), who is a Justice on the Supreme Court of Georgia. Preston Harris will go by ‘Harris’ (Just like his grandfather). This blesses their family with their 3 year old daughter, Edie, and their newborn son, Harris. Preston is currently a Nuclear Reactor Operator for Southern Company at Plant Hatch near Baxley, GA. Also, Phil’s daughter, Harley Savannah Aaron, and her Vidalia Gymnastics Center Wildcats Competition Cheerleading Team placed 3rd in their level at the National Competition Cheer & Dance Meet at Universal Studios Orlando this past April. 1958: Cicero Lucas’s granddaughter, Lindsey Ingle, graduated from UGA Terry Business School in Management and Spanish on May 10, 2013. His grandson, Cicero Lucas V (Fifth), was on the UGA Club Tennis team that beat Florida for the National Championship in April. It was played in Arizona. Circle of Honor

The Circle of Honor presentation took place on April 5, 2013 at the Tate Center in Athens, GA. Congratulations to Jon Stinchcomb (1999-2002) who was inducted into the Circle of Honor. He joins his brother, Matt Stinchcomb, who served as a host for the evening. Also, congratulations to Francis Roosevelt “Rosey” Gilliam, II (1977) who received the Bill Hartman Award that evening which was presented by Coach Vince Dooley.

SEC Network FAQ’sGENERAL/STRUCTURAL

1. When will the SEC Network launch?The Network will launch in August 2014

2. What will the Network be called?The Network will be called the “SEC Network.” The formal name is the “SEC ESPN Network.”

3. How is the different than other conference or single-school networks?This collaboration between the SEC and ESPN will bring together unparalleled content from one of the most competitive conferences in the country with the highest quality, most innovative production partner in the sports industry.

4. Will the Network look similar to ESPN channels?The Network will have the highest quality production value and a look and feel consistent with ESPN’s other networks.

5. Where will the Network be located?The production home will be in Charlotte, NC. This location will provide for efficient use of ESPN’s existing production facility in Charlotte and it will have support from all of ESPN’s resources in Bristol, Conn.

6. Why is Charlotte the Network’s home especially since there are no SCE teams in NC?ESPN already have a state-of-the-art facility in Charlotte that is easily accessible from across the SEC footprint.

7. Will each campus (or the SEC Offices) have upgraded television facilities?Each campus is being assessed for its capabilities and level of content integration from each of the school campuses. We anticipate some level of connection and integration with each institution’s facilities so we can produce and deliver content in an efficient manner.

8. How many people will work for the SEC Network?We anticipate more than 100 full-time staff for the Network across ESPN.

PROGRAMMING & CONTENT9. Will the SEC Network be 24 hours a day, seven days a week?

The SEC Network will have 24/7 programming; it’s a dedicated channel for all things SEC.10. What kind of shows will I see on the SEC Network?

At the outset, the Network will offer SEC sports and sports-related studio programming 24 hours a day, seven days a week. More than 1,000 live events will be available in the first full year across the television Network and its digital extensions. This will include approximately 45 football games, more than 100 men’s basketball games, 60 women’s basketball games and events from across all 21 SEC-sponsored sports.

11. How will the SEC Network enhance the SEC fan experience?More than 1,000 live events will be available. The SEC Network will provide more than 450 live games each year. An ad-ditional 550 games will be distributed digitally. The Network will bring football, basketball, baseball, and all SEC campus sports to SEC fans. These outlets will provide more in-depth content to fans across the country than ever before. Fans will be able to access content on a range of devices. Also, there will be programming dedicated to news and analysis surround-ing the events.

12. How many football games will be aired on the Network?The Network will televise approximately 45 football games per season.

13. How many basketball games? Baseball? Women’s sports? Olympic?At least 450 events will be televised on the Network each year. Of the 450 events, there will be more than 100 men’s bas-ketball games, 60 women’s basketball games and 250 Olympic sports on the Network. More the 550 additional sporting events will be available on our digital platforms. The digital platform will include an outlet, similar to ESPN3, for the other 550 games and a live linear stream of the television network. This content will be available to Network subscribers across a range of devices.

14. Will each school have a block of time to program as they see fit?This is a conference-wide network. The goal is to provide equitable exposure for each of the SEC member institutions. The Network will achieve this goal without each school having its own block of time to program.

15. Will the Network show breaking news or investigative pieces about the conference similar to ESPN?The Network will cover and report on sports news and information in an objective manner, but the basic premise is the Network has created a Content Board which has equal representation from the SEC and ESPN. The Board will work col-laboratively on the programming and presentation. The Network, along with its digital extensions, will serve SEC sports fans and sports fans more broadly.

16. Will there be academic programming?We have 16 months between now and the launch. We will continue to build out the full scope of the Network which will include content beyond live events. The Content Board will continue to build out the programming schedule for the Net-work and its digital extensions.

Outside of the rights in the existing CBS and ESPN agreements, each school provides the rights and access to all other live events for the SEC Network.

18. Will the SEC Network air high school football games?No.

19. Will the SEC Network be able to re-air games shown on other ESPN networks? CBS?Yes.

20. Will the conference staff be on air or have any regular shows?No.

21. Will the SEC Network air bowl games? SEC Conference Championships?There are no current plans to air bowl games on the Network. The Network will televise selected contests from SEC Cham-pionships not available on another ESPN platform. CBS will televise the SEC Football Championship Game.

22. Will there be fewer games available to me now that there is a Network?The Network will provide more than 1,000 live events per year for SEC fans and sports fans across the country. These games will also be available online on a range of devices to allow for widespread access that is not currently available.

23. Will the Network include new personalities or use existing ESPN personalities for the games and studio shows?A mix of both existing ESPN personnel and new on-air staff will be present on the Network.

DISTRIBUTION/ AVAILABILITY/ AD SALES24. How can I get the SEC Network in time for the August 2014 launch?

An agreement is already in place with AT&T U-verse to distribute the Network. ESPN is working hard to ensure that the Network will be available via cable, satellite and telco distributors (such as Comcast, Time Warner Cable, DirecTV, DISH Network, AT&T U-verse, Cox and Verizon FiOS). ESPN will continue negotiating with the other distributors in the com-ing months. Your cable, satellite, or telco provider makes programming decisions on customer requests. As a fan of the Southeastern Conference, please support the SEC Network by calling your cable, satellite, or telco provider and requesting the SEC Network.

25. Are there currently any carriage agreements?Yes. An agreement is already done with AT&T U-verse, the fastest growing multi-channel distributor in the country.

26. How do I get the digital part of the Network?Provided you are a customer who receives the Network from your cable, satellite, or telco provider, you can contact that provider and get a username and password which will allow you to access the content on computers, tablets, mobile phones and other consumer devices like Xbox.

27. What is the best way for fans and alumni who want to make sure their cable company carries the Network?Please visit www.GetSECNetwork.com to show your interest in the Network and provide some general contact informa-tion.

28. What’s the expected reach of the Network outside the SEC footprint and on what level of service will distributors carry the Network (Expanded basic? Tier?)The Network will have strong appeal and interest beyond the 11-state SEC footprint. While this is all subject to negotiation, carriage will be sought on broadly distributed packages.

29. Will I be able to watch the Network on my mobile phone or similar device?Yes. The SEC Network will be available on computers, tablets, mobile phones and other consumer devices like Xbox to fans who receive their video subscription through an affiliated provider. The aim is to make this content available to fans anytime, anywhere, similar to how the WatchESPN application works today.

30. Will I be able to watch the Network on a device other than my TV (online? Tablet?)Provided you are a subscriber of an affiliated provider (a cable, satellite, or telco partner), you will be able to access the content with your existing login credentials, which will allow you to access the content on computers, tablets, mobile phones and other devices like Xbox.

31. How will you decide what games to televise early in the Network’s existence?The SEC has great depth in all major sports so the Network will have top-tier matchups each week to serve viewers and those distributors that choose to carry the network.

32. Can I pay to subscribe to the network online, Pay-Per-View or via ESPN3 if I can’t get it on TV?No. The games will be exclusive to the network and its digital extensions. However, once a subscriber has access to the Network via an affiliated provider, that subscriber will have access to the content on computers, tablets, mobile phones and other consumer devices like Xbox. The aim is to make this content available to fans anytime, anywhere.

33. How will this impact my cable bill?

37. Who will sell sponsorship for the Network?ESPN will sell advertising and sponsorship on behalf of the Network. ESPN will also represent the SEC’s Corporate Sponsor Program.

38. Where can I apply for a job at SEC Network?You can apply online at ESPNcareers.com. Job opening for the SEC Network positions will be posted in late Spring 2014.

39. Will the Network have an internship program?ESPN has a SEC internship program already in place. The Network will source candidates from the existing process and pool. Information about where to apply is forthcoming.

Bulldog Haven is a designated section of the historic Oconee Hill Cemetery that is open exclusively to UGA football letter-men, their spouses and families. Located ad-jacent to Sanford Sta-dium, Bulldog Haven offers a unique rest-ing place in the heart of the University of Georgia campus. This is Athens’ only cemetery desig-nated to honor and celebrate the lives of UGA football lettermen.
