ENGLISH AS AN ADDITIONAL LANGUAGEFor students who have arrived in Australia recently and are learning English.

THIS IS SPECIAL TO ME VELS Levels BL-B1 and SL-S1.1 This is Special to me focuses on community and uses oral story telling to build community and share experiences. Students bring an item to the Huddle that holds special significance for them. The item may relate to an achievement, to their journey to or their settlement in Australia. After sharing a This is Special to Me item in small groups, students create a poster using Comic Life software telling the story behind the object with photographs and captions.

OUR JOURNEYS VELS Levels BL-B1 and S1.2 Students listen to a community guest tell their familys immigration story. They consider the story and identify strengths of character relating to it. They then tell their own migration story in small groups using props and document their stories on video. The program focuses on oral language development and aims to build community through sharing experiences. With the learner at the centre of the activity, the socio-linguistic profile of the group is enhanced.

MOONEE PONDS CREEK VELS Level S1.3Students learn about impacts on the natural environment by visiting the Moonee Ponds Creek. They explore maps and images to imagine the environment before the settlement of Melbourne.

  • KANGAROOS.COM.AU/HUDDLE 5

Students visit the creek and document the environment on video to make a short movie about the creek today focusing on plants, animals, the water, transport and activities on the creek.

FOOTY LITERACY VELS Levels BL-B2 Students learn the basic skills and vocabulary of AFL football. They are introduced to AFL teams, the fixture and the role of football in the lives of Melbournians. Students also learn about healthy eating by naming and sorting fruit and vegetables.

THIS IS SPECIAL TO ME Years 3-6This is Special to Me focuses on oral language development and uses oral story telling to build community and share experiences. Students bring an item to the Huddle that holds special significance for them. For years 3-4, this may be any item that carries memories. For years 5-6, the item may relate to an achievement or to a journey they have experienced (migration, school camp, a trip to the city or a weekend away). After sharing a This is Special to Me item in small groups, students create a poster using Comic Life software telling the story behind the object with photographs and captions.

TRADITIONAL STORIES Years 3-6This program develops speaking and listening skills. Students listen to traditional stories online and retell their own interpretationof the stories using props. They present and video their renditions of the story so as to develop oral language through a narrative. Character strengths, indigenous perspectives and values are highlighted in each of the stories shared.

ARDEN STREET Years 4-6The Arden Street program is a good place to start for those new to Aegis Park. By viewing past and present images, students learn about Arden Street and the connection that the North Melbourne Football Club has to its historical home ground. They consider how the locality has changed and its uses over the past 200 hundred years. They explore its current uses and reflect on impacts on the environment and sustainable ways of living. Students make a

3-minute movie about Arden Street and its uses today, using Flip cameras and Flip share software.

EARLY MELBOURNE Years 5-6Students learn about Indigenous and early Melbourne through three key figures - Barak, Batman and Buckley. They learn about the treaty signed by local elders, which formed the basis of white settlement in Victoria. They explore indigenous perspectives and key characters through primary sources, maps, biographies and online texts, videos and images. Prior and post learning is recorded via digital media by students writing graffiti on an image of historical significance.

MOONEE PONDS CREEK Years 5-6Students learn about impacts on the natural environment by visiting the Moonee Ponds Creek. They explore maps and images to imagine the environment before the settlement of Melbourne. Students visit the creek and document the environment on video to make a short movie about the creek today focusing on plants, animals, the water, transport and human activity on the creek.

ACADEMIES Multicultural, Girls and Indigenous Academies for 10-14 year olds

The Huddle continues to support pathways for students into football and to increase their confidence and participation both on and off the field. Using the clubs players as mentors, the academies nurture relationships and empower students to maximize their potential.

The academies aim to increase positive behaviours and build confidence. Activities are held out of schools hours and participants benefit from a range of opportunities such as playing a match, free tickets to a Kangaroos game and referral to a junior football club and further Huddle activities.

    STUDY SUPPORT PROGRAM

The Huddles study support program for 15-25 year olds increases learning opportunities for young people by providing subject specific tutoring, access to internet and learning technologies, and language support for students for whom English is an additional language.

Students self refer to the program and are paired with a tutor once their educational needs and aspirations have been determined by the teacher co-ordinator of the program. The program allows for differentiated learning, group work and 1:1 and is responsive to individual learning styles and needs.

In 2012, the program will expand to operate from 4-7pm, 4 nights per week and for 4 hours on weekends.

The Huddle Scholarship for Young People (ESL)The Huddle Scholarship for Young People offers the student a mentor that supports their pathway into tertiary education or work. Students are immersed in a supportive study environment within a community and sport complex hence there is the potential to build networks and promote work/life balance through various activities at Arden Street.

The Huddle offers 15 places to school students of ESL or refugee backgrounds for Mentorship and Tutoring support.

  • KANGAROOS.COM.AU/HUDDLE 15

Study skills for 15-25 year oldsSound study and organizational skills encourage active life-long learning. The Huddle offers a 3-hour course to reinforce strong study skills to complement our approach in The Huddle Study Support Program.

Through the course, students identify their own strengths and weaknesses in their learning style and they learn to create a quality study environment. They develop critical and creative thinking for decision-making and problem solving and think about how to evaluate the accuracy and reliability of websites. Taking effective notes and studying for objective, subjective, and performance evaluations are also a focus.

There are 15 places available students can email [email protected] to register their interest.
