Dear Faith Family of OLG, Precious Blood, Ocean of Divine Mercy: Flow upon us.

Precious Blood, Most pure Offering: Procure us every Grace!

Precious Blood, Hope and Refuge of sinners: Atone for us!

Precious Blood, Delight of holy souls: Draw us! Amen.

St. Catherine of Siena The month of July is dedicated to the Most Precious Blood of Jesus. The feast of the Precious Blood of our Lord was instituted in 1849 by Pius IX, but the devotion is as old as Christianity. The early Fathers taught that the Church was born from the pierced side of Christ, and that the sacra-ments were brought forth through His Blood. “The Precious Blood which we worship is the Blood which the Savior shed for us on Calvary and reassumed at His glorious Resurrec-tion; it is the Blood which courses through the veins of His risen, glorified, living body at the right hand of God the Fa-ther in heaven; it is the Blood made present on our altars by the words of Consecration; it is the Blood which merited sanctifying grace for us and through it washes and beauti-fies our soul and inaugurates the beginning of eternal life in it." I really believe that one of the symptoms of modern society (and I would even include, sadly, modern Catholic society) one of the symptoms of a growing secularism is the lessen-ing and the weakening of devotion. Devotion, as we know, is made up of three elements: It is first- veneration, it is sec-ondly- invocation, and it is thirdly- imitation. In other words, devotion to the Precious Blood of Christ, the Lamb of God who was slain, is first of all to be veneration on our part, which is a composite of knowledge, love and adoration. We are to study to come to a deeper understanding of what these two words, Precious Blood, really mean. Outside of sacred scripture, from the first century of the Christian era Pope St. Clement I, dated about 96 A.D., said: "Let us fix our gaze on the Blood of Christ and realize how truly precious It is, seeing that it was poured out for our salvation and brought the grace of conversion to the whole world."

To understand the meaning of the Precious Blood we must get some comprehension of sin, of the awfulness of offend-ing God, because it required the Blood of the Son of God to forgive that sin. We are living in a time in which sin has become fashionable. Sin is terrible and awful because it cuts us from God’s friendship. It must be the most dreadful thing in the universe. Why? Because it cost the living God in human form the shedding of His Blood. Every single day we are called to make up in our lives the suffering of Jesus. We are so precious in the eyes of God that he would save us. In turn we are to be his eyes and hands so that others may see their value before God. Let us pray: O God, who by the Precious Blood of your only Begotten Son have redeemed the whole world, preserve in us the work of your mercy, so that, ever honoring the mystery of our salvation, we may merit to obtain its fruits. Through our lord Jesus Christ, your son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit, one God, for ever and ever. (Votive Mass in honor of the Precious Blood) Hope you all have a safe Fourth of July weekend. Let us give thanks for the gift of our independence and prayers for peace in our nation and world. May God bless America! In Christ’s Peace,

Padre Marinello Saguin

The practice of requesting a Mass to be offered for loved ones, living or deceased, is a beautiful and wonderful part of our Catholic tradition. Masses are offered for many

reasons: for the souls in purgatory, in remembrance of someone who is deceased, or in honor of a birthday or anniversary.

If you would like to have a Mass said for someone, please call our parish office at (818) 342-4686 to or request it on our website.
