A look at Allison & BAE

Biggest players in the market.Allison: parallel vs. BAE: series hybrid system

Only 8.8% of U.S transit buses are using hybrid technology

Combined efforts: SF Climate Action Plan + SFMTA strives to

remain an environmental leader while improving serviceEvaluation Criteria

Fuel Efficiency: consumption, bio-diesel, cost savings

    Reliability: MDBF, service delays, breakdowns

    Maintainability: maintenance costs and durability

    Acquisition Cost: cost savings

Top 4 Reasons We Purchased BAE1. BAE hybrid propulsion system is $45K less per bus

    compared to Allison

    2. Battery technology is expected to improve substantially in

the next 8 to 10 years to a point where it may be possible

to convert the BAE system to all electric buses

    3. BAE system is equipped with scroll compressors

Advantage over regular compressors they do not spill outoil that causes clogs in the air system

    4. BAE hybrid propulsion system is 10% more fuel efficientbased on initial consumption report

    11

What is the GOAL?To get the BEST system for the fleet

    Improving Technology with BAE

In 2006 purchased vehicles through Orion using the BAEsystem

MDBF was below 3K, poor performance

BAE made significant technology advancements Energy

    1. Energy Storage System

    2. Traction Motor Design

    3. Traction Generator Design

    4. PCS Power Control System

    12

MDBF went from under 3K to over 5K
