Maybe on your birthday or at the beginning of a new year you say to yourself “This year is going to be different”. And then what happens? It becomes a sad repeat of the past. If you’ve ever struggled to create meaningful change in your life, then I’m here to help. I want you to understand that self-doubt, resistance & self-sabotage is a REALLY normal part of the change process. I see this in basically every one of my clients when they join my programs. It doesn’t make you a bad person or mean that you lack willpower, its just part and parcel of growing, changing and becoming better. Unfortunately, most people don’t recognise this and when the resistance shows up, they convince themselves it’s not meant to be and they cave into old habits and give up on their dreams and goals.

5 Step Formula To Change Your Life & Make It Stick

1. Create A Clear & Compelling Vision Have a strong vision of the end outcome in clear, tangible terms. What are you changing and what will it look like once you have it? If there’s uncertainty in your vision it leaves room for resistance to creep in. There are so many ways to do this, here are just a few ideas:

• Create a vision board • Write it out daily in your journal • Close your eyes & visualise it • Talk about your vision daily as if you have already achieved it

Connect with this vision daily and make it really specific and concrete so you have something to draw on when the going gets tough.

2. Work On Your Mindset No matter what kind of change you’re looking to create, it’s imperative you work on your mindset. Until you do, you’ll keep coming up against the same blocks time and time again that will pull you off the path to change. Not long after starting a change process, our inner critic jumps in the way and starts to fill our mind with thoughts like: “I don’t think this is really working for me” “I don’t have time for this” “I can’t ever create the change I want” “It’s never going to happen for me, I may as well not even try” As a result, self-sabotaging habits creep in. We give up on our dreams and goals, even though we know that the change we want is in our best interests, and will ultimately create the experience we want in life. A strong, positive mindset will equip you with confidence and self belief and allow you to move through the challenges that inevitably come up when growing and changing (rather than allowing these to derail you).

3. Set Improvement Goals Improvement goals will help you to track your progress and provide a feedback loop so you can clearly see how you’re tracking on the path to the big end goals. The old saying “anything measured improves” is true here. For example:

• “I will improve the number of push ups I can do from 5 to 15 by (date) • “I will include the number of meals I eat with greens or salad from 0 to

2 by (date)” • “I will increase the number of calls I make to prospects from 2 per day

to 5 per day by date”. You’ll receive clear feedback along the change path, so you can either course correct or be fuelled by the positive momentum that’s created by recognising and achieving improvement goals. Don’t wait until the end to celebrate your achievements!

4. Prepare For The Challenges Don’t go into a change process thinking it’s all going to be rosy and positive, because it just won’t be and you’ll get disappointed in yourself and want to give up. Anytime we go through change, there will be moments that challenge the change we’re trying to create. You need to prepare for these ahead of time, so this one situation doesn’t pull you off track and cost you the whole process. For example:

• What are you going to do when you’re travelling for work and you’re focussed on eating well and there’s nothing but McDonalds or Fish and Chips to eat? Do you need to plan your meals out while you’re travelling, will you need to pack healthy snacks?

• What are you going to do when you put forward the proposal or piece of work for your boss to review and you get criticised?

• Who will you call?

• Do you have a support system around you?

• What’s going to be the action you take?

In that moment of potential weakness, rather than allowing your mind to consider other alternatives that will more than likely set you back, you won’t even need to think about it because the positive action step is just there for you to take.

Have a clear plan and strategise about what you will do when things don’t go well or according to plan. There is so much power in thinking through challenges.

5. Get Accountability & Support Gathering a tribe when you’re changing habits or learning new skills is o important. You can receive support in many different ways. Here’s just a sample:

• Working with a coach or mentor • A friend who has been through something similar • Join an online or local community group (Facebook group, or local

community group) There are many helpful groups out there who can support you with a thousand different goals and objectives. It’s also important to share our goals with others, to create accountability, which maximises our commitment to taking action.
