Christmas Art Lesson This year’s Christmas activity is inspired by traditional craft from Uganda, one of the countries chosen for our last Lenten campaign. Learn about those who you have helped support through fundraising for Trócaire, while getting creative in class by making Christmas gifts for your loved ones! Use our templates to cut your paper into size – recycle old magazines, wallpaper, newspaper, music sheets, whatever you can find! Dab a small bit of glue at the wide end of your paper sample Starting at the wide end, tightly wrap the paper sample around a skewer, wire, safety pin or paper straw, applying glue at intervals and at the very end Slide the bead from the skewer and leave it to dry Seal the bead with varnish, clear nail polish or PVA glue and leave to dry again String your beads and make your jewellery gift Step 1 Step 2 Step 3 Step 4 Step 5 Step 6 Tip: Place the beads on a toothpick and stick into some clay to dry, saving them from sticking to the table After Bibiana’s (right) husband died, she was shunned by her community and left to raise her six children alone, with no income. Since joining the programme the skills and knowledge that Bibiana has acquired have provided the roots for a better life for her and her family: “I can now sustain myself by being creative” . DON’T FANCY MAKING JEWELLERY? Why not try a garland for the school’s Christmas tree and get everyone to contribute! Paper bead making is also hugely popular in Uganda. The ‘Widows’ Programme’ in Mbikko, Uganda supported by Trócaire allows women of all ages to come together to share their experiences and develop new skills and new forms of income to support themselves.
