Later that day, the San Diego City Council unanimously passed the $5 million in funding to put the project in motion, thanks to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Community Development Block Grant program. This was exciting news, not only for me and Council District 4, but also to the members of the Bay Terraces Filipino-American Senior Association. For nearly three decades, the members gather at the park to engage in daily activities including dancing, socializing, and building a community. In May 2016, we announced $500,000 for the design of the center. The 3,200 square foot facility will include a multi-purpose room, kitchen, office, restrooms, and site work to meet Americans with Disabilities Act standards. The groundbreaking is expected to start fall of 2018. City Council Meeting to Better Understand the Efforts to Address Homelessness in San Diego On Tuesday, April 24 th , I convened a Special City Council meeting dedicated to homelessness. The purpose of the meeting was to ensure that we are doing everything we can to enhance and support regional efforts and make sure that we are moving forward urgently and proactively to house our homeless. We heard informational reports to better understand what’s being done to address homelessness at the county level, what the efforts and strategies are at the city level, and what we can do better regarding this issue. We also revisited and updated the City of San Diego’s Comprehensive Policy on Homelessness, which has not been updated since 1995, to make sure it is reflective of the actions and strategies needed to take on the challenges in 2018. I established the Select Committee on Homelessness in March 2017, and the City Council unanimously supported my motion to extend the life of the committee for 2018. Homelessness continues to be one of my top priorities as council president, and I know that we can, and need to do more to house our homeless and provide the necessary resources to improve their quality of life.

$5 Million for the Construction of the Bay Terrace Community (Senior) Center

A Facility that Every Community Resident Will Enjoy for Generations to Come

On Monday, April 23rd, Mayor Faulconer and I held a press conference to announce that the City secured $5 million in grant funding for the construction of the Bay Terrace Community Center. Later that day, the San Diego City Council unanimously passed the $5 million in funding to put the project in motion, thanks to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Community Development Block Grant program.

This was exciting news, not only for me and Council District 4, but also to the members of the Bay Terraces Filipino-American Senior Association. On Tuesday, April 24th, I convened a Special City Council meeting dedicated to homelessness. The purpose of the meeting was to ensure that we are doing everything we can to enhance and support regional efforts and make sure that we are moving forward urgently and proactively to house our homeless.

We heard informational reports to better understand what’s being done to address homelessness at the county level, what the efforts and strategies are at the city level, and what we can do better regarding this issue. We also revisited and updated the City of San Diego’s Comprehensive Policy on Homelessness, which has not been updated since 1995, to make sure it is reflective of the actions and strategies needed to take on the challenges in 2018. Congrats to All of the Graduates: Council President Cole spent time with the young men of the Blue Heart Foundation at their 3rd Annual Signing Day and Awards Celebration. The Blue Heart Foundation is a non-profit organization that focuses on the education empowerment of underserved youth ages 13 to 18 in San Diego.

New Joint-Use Park for the Public: Mayor Faulconer, Council President Cole, San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) Superintendent Cindy Marten, SDUSD Board Vice President, Dr. Sharon Whitehurst Payne, local leaders, and 500 students from Horton Elementary School broke ground on a joint-use park for the Encanto community. The new park will feature three and a half acres of turf field, granite field and walking track, as well as asphalt playing courts and play equipment.

Giving Back to the Community: Council President Cole at the Diamond BID meeting at the new Diamond CoWork space which opens its doors to businesses, entrepreneurs, and members looking for place to hold meetings.

Clean-Up in CD4: Residents and students took part in the 2018 Creek to Bay Clean-Up in the Paradise Hills community. Creek to Bay is one of hundreds of clean-ups hosted by I Love a Clean San Diego.
